Thanks for sharing the video link.

What is also noteworthy is the manufacturer recommendation of an additive every 20,000 km to clean up the soot. Hope the service costs don't increase much.

More on the boosterjet engine!

Quote:
With direct injection and turbocharging working in sync, the Boosterjet will have a relatively flat band of max torque (150Nm) from 1,700-4500 rpm giving it a very strong mid-range. Top-end too is expected to be good. Driving with a light foot, sticking to the low and mid-range should ensure good fuel economy, but accelerate and that figure drops significantly

Reminds me of my old Opel Astra where we had to put "System G" along with every tank of petrol.
I wonder if this additive is just like an off the shelf injector cleaner type thing or something more elaborate...

75 kW of power = 101 hp / 102 ps confirming it is detuned from the international spec.

With a kerb weight of 950 kg, that gives a power/weight ratio of 106 bhp/ton.

re: The Maruti Baleno RS: 1.0L turbo-petrol engine. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.69 lakh

Though it's a great move by Maruti to think about the customers who don't bother about FE but cares, about performance; I think the Baleno RS won't be able to match up to the GT TSI with its 3 cylinder engine.

The GT TSI just becomes a beast in the Sports mode. Also, it comes with VW standard tank like build quality which will instill more confidence in me to push the car to its limit.

Regards

Saubhik

60 Kgs heavier than 1.2 Alpha petrol!! 0-100 of Baleno 1.2 is 12.x. I would expect booster jet to do it in late 10s or early 11s.

I don't think its intended to do that either. I estimate RS to come around 8.3 lakhs ex-showroom. A good 90-95k less than Polo GT TSI. And remember how well Baleno did in the Overdrive hot hatch test, its times were close to the Polo despite having 75 BHP, because of its light body. Every European review has claimed 1.0 to be better than the 1.2 too. Expect the RS to further narrow down the gap to Polo GT TSI and provide the performance in a more affordable range.

The tests done by Australian reviewers on 108 BHP version gave it times just less than 10 seconds. I expect it to hover around the early 10.xx for the India detuned version

I think it'll beat my Polo TSI in Speed and cornering as long as we are comparing stock with stock.
But if it's only 1L cheaper than the Polo, then I imagine the DSG, VW brand, and 4cyl 1.2 is worth the 1L premium. Driving a manual in the city is a pain.

As per Autocar UK, Baleno 1.0 Boosterjet with 5MT does 0-100 in 11.4 seconds. Boosterjet is also available with 6 speed AT. Initial reports did say 0-100 is around 10.5. But later on full review, they have mentioned 11.4 seconds. Considering the engine is detuned in India, I don't expect it it be in early 10s for sure.

I agree with everything you mentioned except for the VW brand. In fact the main customer would be someone who wants a turbo petrol engine but doesn't trust VW for service, support and reliability.

Also, many enthusiasts prefer the manual option.

It's too bad that the engine has been detuned. Bummer!! A 25NM torque makes a lot of difference in performance. However what I really cannot understand is the difference in weight? The regular Baleno is 900 odd kilos while the Baleno RS has a 50kg increase in weight.

Where does this increase come from? Other than the rear disc brake that is a great step forward from Maruti, the other features are same as the Baleno Alpha top end. Is the BoosterJet engine heavier than the 1.2 K series? Surprising if so.

Autocar has an interesting read on the BoosterJet engine.

Drive on,
Shibu.

Turbocharger, intercooler, associated plumbing, slightly revised fuel assembly (due to direct injection) - all these contribute to the increased weight.

EDIT - since its a 3-cylinder engine, it will also require either an unbalanced flywheel, or a balancer shaft to counteract the inherent vibrations of any 3-cylinder engine. And this adds in some more weight.

Consider this - the EcoBoost engine in the EcoSport is advertised as having a small engine head - A4-sized surface, small enough to go into carry-on baggage in a plane, and all that razzle-dazzle.

Well, guess what? The EcoBoost is the heaviest of all 3 manual variants - heavier than the larger capacity 1.5 diesel and 1.5 petrol engines.

Downsizing engines by putting turbos on them isn't done to save material/manufacturing costs, it is primarily done to meet regulations around emissions and fuel economy and associated tax breaks that come with smaller capacity engines.

Baleno RS, available only in Alpha variant can now be booked online by paying a sum of INR 11,000.00

North Indian dealers are estimating a 3 month waiting period.

The higher weight of the Baleno RS is also because of the larger radiator required for the turbo jet engine.

It would also be worthwhile to mention that e bookings are open today itself!
