IMO all manufacturers want to give their best in every market. But both quality and features come at a cost, and most manufacturers have taken it to heart that the mainstream Indian customer is not willing to pay for them. So they are wary, and can we blame them really?

Hopefully, as the Indian market matures, we will see export-spec cars being sold in India as well (and flying off the shelves as the "tin cans" do these days).

Re: Maruti to export Baleno to Japan. EDIT: Now Europe too

Baleno undergoes EURO NCAP tests.

The Suzuki Baleno has two star ratings:
A) one based on the safety equipment which is fitted as standard to all cars in the range - 3 Star Rating

B) and another which also includes an optional safety pack called 'Radar Brake Support'. - 4 Star Rating

Kerb weight of Baleno tested is 890 kgs which is same as Baleno petrol top variant on sale in India. It's good to see 3 star rating with just 2 airbags.

Sorry, but this is not accurate. As described in the news section of Teambhp, both cars get lots of safety features unavailable in the Indian variants - "the cars tested were equipped with front airbags for the driver and passenger, front and rear seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, side head airbags at for the front and rear occupants, side chest airbags at the front, an ISOFIX child seat mount and a seat belt reminder"
Additional notes from the report (as published in Business Standard),
  • "In the full-width rigid barrier impact, protection of the driver was rated as good except for the chest, protection of which was adequate"
  • "Dummy readings of chest compression indicated marginal protection for this part of the body but good or adequate protection elsewhere"
  • "In the side barrier test, dummy numbers showed good protection but the score for the head was penalised as the side curtain airbag was deemed not to have deployed in the correct manner in the side pole test"
  • "In the more severe side pole impact, dummy readings of lateral rib compression indicated weak chest protection and the head protection was downgraded to adequate as a result of the incorrect airbag deployment"

Would you buy this car after these reviews?

Yes, I was wrong about 2 airbags part. When I checked the NCAP site, standard variant had side airbags and Radar brake support was the only extra feature in safety pack which got 4 stars. If you check the crash test for swift, it is mentioned as "body shell unstable". Swift weighs 100 kgs more than baleno, but baleno is 10 percent stronger which is reflected in crash test results. I have already bought the car couple of months back and I don't regret after seeing the crash test results. Baleno has not done well but it has passed the tests decently. Body shell is same for domestic and export market. Front airbags are standard in baleno which is good move by Maruti.

We can assume that India spec Baleno will be equally safe as Euro spec car in case of frontal crash.
But at the same time, site impact could turn out to be fatal, looking at the way it collapsed when collided with a pole.
Drive safe!

Yes, we can conclude that maruti has not compromised on body shell for Baleno like Swift. Baleno is made only in India and 1.2 litre petrol Baleno for Europe weighs almost same as Indian version. Swift sold in India weighs lesser than European model. European swift scored 5 stars while body shell of Indian make swift was rated unstable. I am not fully happy or impressed with crash test results of baleno. I am just trying to point that maruti is not compromising on safety like before. Baleno safety review is better than swift and also maruti claims Brezza as the first car to meet future Indian safety standards. Making airbags standard, not compromising on body shell etc is something to be appreciated
Cheers!

Maruti Suzuki might have started preparing for BSNCAP norms, which may come into effect in a year or two.

Agree with you. On the brighter side, atleast you can be confident about the body shell and other aspects. Also, note that the Euro NCAP tests the vehicle at 64 km/hr compared to the proposed BNVSAP which will test at 56 km/hr. So the Baleno will get a very good rating in BNVSAP.

And congratulations on your purchase!

I am just happy that manufacturers are finally waking up and making safety features standard for Indian customers. It is mainly due to BNVSAP norms which will come into effect in 2017. Market leader Maruti Suzuki is doing things right unlike before.
Cheers!

Baleno in Japan weighs 960 KGS for the AT variant. Indian variant is 915 KGS if I'm right. Can anyone confirm please.

960 kgs is boosterjet baleno with automatic transmission. 1.2 L baleno which was tested by Euro NCAP weighs 890 kgs which is almost same as 1.2 L Baleno Alpha which is on sale in India.
Cheers!

Re: Maruti to export Baleno to Japan. EDIT: Now Europe too

After exporting the Baleno to Japan and Europe, Maruti Suzuki has started exporting the car to the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. For these markets, the company has opted to use its 1,373cc, 4-cylinder (K14B) petrol engine with manual and automatic transmissions.
