The engines Axed in the BS6 Era:

Maruti will become a petrol-only carmaker with the withdrawal of its in-house 1.5-litre DDiS225 diesel engine. Launched only in 2019, the engine has had a short run in the market. A BS6 version is on the cards for launch down the road.

The Volkswagen Group might bring back diesels too but come April 1, 2020, all brands under the umbrella (Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi, primarily) will have petrol-only offerings.

Auto dealers can get rid of BS 4 stocks even after deadline.

If there are any unsold BS 4 stocks by end of March, dealers can convert them into pre-owned cars and sell them to new car buyers at BS 4 prices

Yes, the option of registering the vehicle in somebody's name is always there. It then becomes a used car and ready for resale. This is a completely legal practice and was done during the BS 3 to BS 4 transition as well. Discounts on such vehicles depends entirely on the stock the dealer has

India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki, for instance, had only 2,000 BS 4 cars at the start of March. With its first BS 6 car having debuted in April 2019, the company shut BS 4 production in February before switching completely to BS 6. Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra are at various stages of the transition.

Automakers to move SC for more time to register BS-IV vehicles amid Covid-19 outbreak.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Federation of Automotive Dealers (FADA) are considering approaching the Supreme Court separately, seeking relaxation to the March 31 deadline. They want an extension at least till the coronavirus scare settles down.

I normally don't see eye to eye with the SIAM, but will agree with them on this one. It's only fair that registration is allowed till 31st March as BS6 kicks in on 1st April.

There was a provision for them already. This is auto makers trying to milk even the last remaining stocks:

If they do have stock, they are free to sell them as second hand and discounted prices. That will be a loss but then hey, it's not completely closed door.

So I was compiling a list of cars that will officially cease to be produced in any guise post April 1. Please correct/update if anything's amiss.

Maruti - Alto K10. Only car to be discontinued despite it's engine being updated in BS 6 guise in other cars like S Presso, WagonR and Celerio. As an owner of one, sad to see it go.

Hyundai - Xcent (?). Not sure if it is being replaced entirely by the Aura.

Tata - Hexa, Safari, Zest, Bolt and Sumo. Hexa supposed to return later this year in BS6 guise.

Mahindra - Xylo, NuvoSport, Verito, Vibe, Bolero, Scorpio, Thar. Last three expected to return in BS6 guise.

Honda - Jazz, BRV

Toyota - Etios, Cross and Liva

Renault - Lodgy

Nissan-Datsun - Sunny and Terrano for sure. Am not sure if the 1.2 petrol engine is being updated, which means its also curtains for Micra/Active and Go/+. So does that mean they just have two cars, Kicks and Redigo, on sale from April 1?

SUPREME COURT TURNS DOWN PLEA FOR BSVI DEADLINE EXTENSION.

The Supreme Court has turned down the Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA)'s plea for extending the deadline for BSVI implementation to May 31.

More than 7 Lakh BS4 Vehicles Left Unsold Even As BS6 Norms Merely Days Away!

The stringent BS6 emission norms will come into action by 1st April 2020, and due to this lock-down in India, around 7,20,000 BS4 vehicles remain unsold at dealerships across the country.

-BS4 vehicle consists of 7 lakh two-wheelers, 12,000 passenger vehicles and 8,000 commercial vehicles

- 27th March is the expected date for the court’s hearing of FADA’s petition, but FADA has requested if the court hearing session can happen early.

In case we are not heard by the Supreme Court, we will engage with the OEMs and see how the stock can be returned to them. We will have to do that — there are many dealers who will not be able to bear this loss

It looks like two wheeler manufacturers have not been as proactive in managing their inventory and launching BS6 models in a timely manner, just like last time with BS3 to BS4 transition. Car manufacturers seem to have done a pretty decent job and leftover inventory seems to be at a decent level considering the Covid 19 crisis.

I think based on the current lockdown due COVID-19, we might see an extension to manage the inventory of BS 4 vehicles.

Are the RTOs open to register the BS4 vehicles that have been sold already? Before the Junta curfew of Sunday, the Ministry of Transport Delhi issued the attached advert. (saying that BS4 registrations are being carried out)

However post the announcement of lockdown on last Sunday, I haven't come across any communication and given people can't step out of their home, except for essential services, don't think RTO would be carrying on with their operations.

How is it in other states? And is anyone aware of any extension being given to/sought for vehicles already sold but not getting registered because of RTOs being shut?

I have just one simple question regarding BS6 diesel vehicles-WHERE HAVE THE OEMs PACKAGED THE DPF/LNT/SCR?! Gone nuts trying to find out, could locate the DPF in the Seltos bought by one of my relatives though (or what I thought was the DPF anyway). Even the company reps at the Auto Expo were playing dumb about it.
