BMW imports the 2016 X1 for testing!

Mod Note: Thread closed. Please continue the discussion at our Next Gen BMW X1 thread.

The second-generation BMW X1 has been officially imported into India for testing purposes, ahead of it's scheduled Indian launch sometime in 2016.

A search on Zauba reveals that a single unit of the all-new S-Drive equipped BMW crossover has been imported from it's parent country, through air cargo.

Featuring more butch and rugged looks than the present-gen X1, BMW has enhanced the SUV-based crossover with a sportier front bumper, optional full LED headlights, a reworked front grille, tweaked ORVMs, new tail lights and a reworked rear bumper.

Among other engine options, the X1 might be powered by a turbo-charged 2.0L diesel unit making around 190 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque.

Re: BMW imports the 2016 X1 for testing!

It will apparently be here around Jan-Feb next year, with the 20d engine. In different trims with both front wheel drive () and X-drive.

I actually think it's a great move for them to offer the FWD version as it will help price the car better. I find the q3 over priced and hope the X1 gets a more competitive pricing with its FWD version.
The X1 is not a car many ethusiasts would pick, the majority of its buyers won't even know the difference between a FWD and RWD.
They should try and launch it by the festive season inline with the international launch.

Looks less estaty and more crossovery, should sell in good numbers if priced right.

Some moves are not only about pricing but also about profitability.

I don't see no price benefit pass on by BMW.

Its a new version so expect it to be at least 5% more expensive than its predecessor

I agree with Karan - I'm sure the xDrive will be more expensive than the current one.

Ultimate front wheel drive machine. I can't believe what this brand is doing in going mainstream. It's losing all the mechanical goodness that made its cars great driving machines in an effort to become more mainstream. I never thought a day would come where a BMW would use a MINI platform. That's just wrong.

I always thought the first-gen was quite underwhelming (no-offence to any owners), it looked too sedate and like an estate. This looks more rugged and SUV like, which in the Indian market is a good thing. I don't know how much the regular buyer would care about FWD or RWD, so as far as BMW is concerned, I don't think they would be bothered by it.

The 2016 BMW X1 has been spied in India for the first time by an IAB reader.

The 2016 X1 will be the first model for BMW India with a front wheel drive layout, a significant change from the rear-wheel driven current X1. The UKL platform which underpins the new X1 saves 135 kg, even though the wheelbase has increased by 90 mm, width by 21 mm and height by 53 mm. This translates to an additional 37 mm of rear knee room and 85 liters of luggage space.

Coming to the engines, the X1 for India is expected to be powered by the 2.0-liter four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine, which on the European variant is available in power states of 150 hp, 190 hp and 231 hp, boasting a 17 percent improvement in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Likewise, BMW have given the 2016 X1 an improved 6-speed manual or an 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

While the automatic transmission will make its way on the India-spec model, it remains to be seen if BMW India launches the xDrive AWD variant, or offers only 2WD.

2016 BMW X1 will certainly be launched in AWD as well. Xdrive variant of the 20d has now also been imported for testing. 20d variants are capable of 190PS.

Re: BMW imports the 2016 X1 for testing!

BMW website is updated with the All New X1.

Prices range from Rs. 29.90L for the FWD Expedition to Rs. 39.90L for X drive M sport. Wonder where prices are headed at this rate. The X1 M sport will nudge 50L on road in Bangalore

But its actually quite competitive to the GLE and Q3 comparing equivalent variants. Have a look at the spec sheet on the BMW site.

I must agree with you on this. I just checked the prices of the X1 in 2013 and it said starting from 27.9 which is only 2 lakhs less. Factor in 3 years on and a whole new (way better) model and it makes a lot of sense. I'd just hoped the AWD would have been a bit cheaper, wouldn't mind skimming on a few other features.

Yes, saw the spec sheet and it looks good. Also the new X1 is larger than the outgoing model. BMW seems to be adopting a different strategy for 2016. They are equipping their cars with all the gizmos there is. Probably they figure that the Indian buyer cares more about the 'features' than how the car drives. In this segment probably people are not as price sensitive as they are feature sensitive.

Re: BMW imports the 2016 X1 for testing!

The pricing of the X1 is as good as it was expected to be. Spot on at par with the competition. The M sport variant feels like a waste, the xline is well loaded. Infact I prefer the rims on the xline more than the M ones. Only disappointment is the lack of leather seats.
What petrol engine is BMW expected to launch and will the pricing be, above or below the diesel price?
I am keen to get the FWD xline version but I think the petrol will drive better in this setup as it has lower torque which is apt for a FWD setup
