Re: Volvo XC90 launched in India at Rs. 64.9 lakhs

Love the new design language of the XC90. A bit disappointed with the powertrains. Overall the car looks good but is it good enough to turn around their fortunes in India? Seems unlikely.

Dont like their new steering wheel design, looks more apt for a hatchback. Should have been more butched up.

Re: Volvo XC90 launched in India at Rs. 64.9 lakhs

The 4 cylinder engine in a car this big isn't going to impress anyone, most of the reviews I have read don't have anything great to say about it, it barely gets the job done and the downsizing is because Volvo can't afford to develop a decent engine, not the usual concern-for-the-environment PR they put every time. This car looks good and its new, with the new GLE and Q7 coming even that advantage will fizzle out and Volvo will be back to selling 50 cars a year or so. The Germans are ahead because they do everything better than Volvo, a thinking man's choice would not be a Volvo, thinking that makes you buy an inferior depreciation disaster isn't good by any measure.

Volvo makes cars that are slightly ahead of the Japanese luxury competition and in India they don't have the brand value to compete head to head with the German trio. A full size SUV with a 4 cylinder engine may be a possibility in the future, I am certain a German brand will do successful implementation, by which I mean important things like power delivery, actual power, NVH and things that average customers worry about.

Re: Volvo XC90 launched in India at Rs. 64.9 lakhs

The engine surely is a bit too underwhelming for its segment, but I won't be surprised if this become the most successful Volvo model on sale in India (best among the miniscule numbers managed by its other models). The car looks elegant yet big and imposing, and for the chauffeur-driven customers this could really be very comfortable option. Brand value notwithstanding, they do have a price advantage over the likes of BMW X5 and got a usable 3rd row.

Re: Volvo XC90 launched in India at Rs. 64.9 lakhs

Even though I am a die-hard petrol head who loves his manual gearbox equipped low slung cars that only please him once in a blue moon when there is no traffic, no crappy roads etc, If I were in the market for a huge barge of an SUV, I would pick the Volvo over anything else out there cause if I bought it, it would not be for the engine (as long as it doesnt feel underpowered, I am fine) it would be for sitting above everyone else in luxury and comfort while being chauffer driven around town Honestly, can you think of a better interior to be in? Puts the overpriced range rover to shame according to me. It remains modern and tech loaded and luxurious while at the same time maintaining a fresh new outlook on the design with fewer elements and less clutter.

Re: Volvo XC90 launched in India at Rs. 64.9 lakhs

A New Beginning

Yes the engine is small and the power delivery will never match the Germans. The 0 - 100 of a xDrive30d is 6.9 compared to the XC90's 7.8 . This is not going to please any of us but the reality is that for most people its sufficient.

In terms of pricing being close to the Germans one has to look at Volvo's global plan. They are trying to move away from the budget luxury tag and that starts with this XC90. What you do get for you money are things such as superior ride quality, Unique interiors while matching or even exceeding the Germans on certain trims, Usable 3rd row (kids & short adults), Uniquely handsome exterior (I don't believe the picture do it justice), more standard features (Tesla style central control unit to name one) & the safety.

Yes perceptions will be a challenge but believe you me Volvo is coming out with all guns blazing. I have a feeling that this bad boy is going to be the new Hollywood must have car. The media blitz is starting already.

Volvo XC90 launched in India at Rs. 64.9 lakhs-aviciivolvocar2015billboard650.jpg

By the time Volvo is done with their "A NEW BEGINNING" campaign most of the western market will have embraced this car( more petrol driven markets at this price point). People now are looking to be unique which this car offers in oodles. The spill over from all of this will help sell in India swell.

Will this car do the 147,000 sales world wide the X5 managed. No. But i don't think their target of 2000 units in India will be hard to manage. This is a great leap for Volvo and hopefully they use this platform to get a better grip on the luxury market for years to come. Opportunity for them to better their sales and servicing both in quantity and quality with respect to India.

It may not be the quickest but it sure is scrumptious from the inside
Here is a detailed review of the Beauty.

2000 cars is a far fetched dream with no new models coming in and this one almost angering fans like myself because of the pricing. As quoted above it'll be a dream for Volvo to achieve 15 cars a month with this one.

But yes the evil side of my brain wants that to happen. Pretty soon Volvo will be offering heavy discounts on this one. It'll spoil the brand image (as it has in the past) but well at least serious buyers have a chance of getting a good deal.

That said, the new Q7's interior is not half bad. And knowing Audi (even though I'm a hardcore BMW guy) , they will price it sharply and before you can blink you'll see insane deals from some dealers in delhi/Haryana. 2 years from today, the scenario will be the same as 4 years ago. Q7 will be market leader. ,ML will be no. 2 ( only because it'll be an older model by then) . X5 will be no. 3. And Volvo will have virtually disappeared. Then Volvo will start dropping prices but nobody would wanna buy a Volvo by then coz of their zero presence and hence zero resale value.

Ask initial owners of Fortuners/MLs/Cayenne. In india you virtually walk away with a profit if you're SUV Purchase is the right model at the right time. I don't think Volvo owners are in that bucket.

Volvo sold 500 cars during the March quarter compared to 250 from last year, when they sold 1260 during the year. With the XC90 and a cheaper V40 it will add a few numbers as well. So 2000 is easily doable.

70% growth looks optimistic on the back of 80L 4 cylinder SUV if you ask me.

Remember, Jan - Mar quarter is the financial year end so it's maximum discount season to clock max sales. Most Dec - Nov manufactured cars are heavily discounted in the March quarter.

Anyway. It's just an opinion. I don't think they'll make it. Let's wait and watch. Picture will be very clear by June end.

About time that deliveries of XC90 started. Volvo has started importing units of new XC90. Reports claim deliveries only by September though.

The Bangalore launch is on the 5th of this month at the Race Course road outlet. I have been invited and hope to be there barring any travel plans.

Was reading up on the all new XC90 and damn, this thing is a 2 ton fortress on wheels! And looks Volvo has gone all out on the safety testing of the SUV, they have crash tested more than 100 of these actual SUVs (not prototypes).

Most of the structure is made of high strength steel alloys:
