Just spent over 1,000kms with the face-lifted A6 around in Ireland.



If the pictures are to be believed, the A6 undergoing testing in India is the 2.0TDi Ultra (notice the badging on the test vehicle above, and our rental below).



The version we rented was the base trim, and should be similar to what we should expect in the A6 business edition in India.

The exterior changes are minimal, and primarily limited to the headlights (which now resemble the A3), new bumpers, and the tail lights. IMHO, tail lights aside, the current A6 looks much better!

Similarly, the interiors too are virtually identical, with the addition of the Eco mode which switches the car off at signals, etc.

The biggest change however, is under the hood.
For starters, the power has been bumped up to 190bhp, a seven speed DSG, and a lot more tech to improve efficiency.
Compared to the 2011 A6 with its multitronic (CVT) gearbox, the new car just feels so much better to drive primarily because of the gearbox.
Performance is now easier to access - and very evident on those quick overtaking manoeuvres. In the 2011 A6, there was a lot of torque steer and hunting for the right gear - all of which is missing in the facelift.
Similarly, on those bends and hills - engine braking is also much more effective than on the 2011 CVT example that we have in Mumbai.

Don't like how bland it looks, but then once you shift it into D/S, all is forgiven


In fact, with this upgrade, one of my biggest grouses with the A6 has now been eliminated - and light steering, low rear seat, and reliability aside; this car is still one of the best options in its segment.
The suspension is quiet, refinement is superb (compared to the X5, and 730D rentals), and the interiors are definitely a lot more special than its current competitors.

As for the efficiency: We got nearly 16kmpl on roads that included narrow two lane highways, lots of curves, and a fair bit of uphill and downhill driving. In Indian conditions, expect it to deliver 14-15 kmpl on a relaxed highway cruise if not more.

Note - this rental had done only 800kms when we picked her up, so I am sure one can extract better efficiency.

Audi launches its updated luxury sedan now called as the A6 Matrix. Priced at Rs. 49.50 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi and Mumbai, this car is the sixth launch for Audi this year after the, R8 LMX, RS 7 Sportback, TT Coupé, RS 6 Avant and the updated Q3.

The A6 Matrix features new Matrix LED headlamps with front and rear dynamic turn indicators, a new front grill, new front bumper, new 18" five 'V' spoke alloy wheel design and high gloss window trims.

Coming to the interiors, the car now gets the next-gen MMI with a 20.32 cm retractable screen, advanced voice commands, navigation and a 600W Bose surround sound system. The front seats are electrically adjustable and the co-driver seat can also be electrically adjusted from the rear seat. The seats are wrapped in Milano leather in black, beige or a new brown colour. Four zone climate control is standard too.

The A6 Matrix is powered by a 2.0 litre diesel motor that churns out 188 BHP and is mated to a 7-speed S-tronic transmission with paddle shifters too. The car also boasts of four driving modes as well as adaptive air suspension.

I see huge resemblance in the grill of the new Elantra and this one. The new Superb also will be close to the 40L bracket when its launched. The usage of black honey comb like plastic inserts are becoming a trend with all the companies nowadays.

Strange name "Matrix" for the branding. After few month, may be Audi will launch a facelift called "Matrix Reloaded".

No 6-cylinder diesel? That sucks. Any car in this segment has to have a 6-cylinder for the full 'luxury' experience. A four banger just doesn't cut it. That's even more so for Audi which shares its engine with the Octavia!

Nevertheless, what a beautiful design. So classy, so timeless. I could sit all day with an A6, just admiring it from different angles. Simply fantastic. I respect Audi for sticking to clean & mature designs while BMW is getting weirder with each new launch, and Mercedes is all young & funky (doesn't appeal to all).

Agreed with GTO. Now only BMW offers V6 diesel in sedan segment among the german trio... I at times wonder what could be the reason for not providing V6, when the same is available in other countries even in segment lower than A6. Even we have some lucky member who owns A4 with 3.0 TDI.

The understated exterior styling does get my attention everytime i see it and thats the reason i still love to a Jetta passing by, even after owing one.

Yes , they should have launched but perhaps this decision is more to with commercial reasons . I have seen 2014 - 530D still sitting at Dealership and we are in late August . This dealership sells around 4-5 520D comfortably in a month . Most buyers in this segment want a large car from outside and a most of these are to be driven by chauffeur . Audi will also have experience based on the numbers they sold in 6 cyl & 4 cyl in past .

Will be interesting to see what all features are included at launch price of 50 Lac .

The looks from the front and the interiors are drool worthy as you said, but the rear of smaller Audis is so VW- ish.

Not that it is poor, actually the rear of VW cars have the most cohesive rear designs, but the Audis are too similar to the Jetta from the back.

Mercedes sells the 6 cylinder E Class in the E350CDI guise.

my bad, Merc too has, meaning only AUDI lacks the 6 cylinder engine.
