Maruti is on a launch spree, to hold its position as the market leader and increase its share in the Indian market.

Here is Maruti's YRB seen for the first time. This is Maruti's answer to Ford EcoSport rival, codenamed YRB. Speculated to have a muscular look most likely the sapre wheel will be placed on the tailgate. Design cues from the Suzuki iV- 4 is strikingly visible.
Expect Maruti to use the tried and tested engines but could be feature rich to compete with the leading players in this segment.

Maruti may unveil the production version of this all-new compact SUV at the Auto Expo 2016 and it could be called Maruti iV4

I am pretty sure by the time this compact SUV hits the market, Maruti will have a new range of diesel engine, atleast one new diesel motor apart from the current two 1.3 offerings.

This SUV looks very promising to me. Finally a proper rival to the EcoSport is in sights. After the YRA, ACI got this one as well. They must be called Maruti Specialists.

It doesn't seem to be a compact version of new Vitara (iv4). This is evident from the head lamps, grill and air dam, curvy roof area above the front windscreen, and old-grand-vitara'ish c-pillar design (with a 'mobilioed' floating design). I can see a very small rear side doors which could probably mean cramped rear seats.

Maruti XA-Alpha has been spied for the first time in almost production ready body form.

.....This all-new Maruti compact SUV will be less than four metres long, have heavily stylised and muscular exterior styling, and will likely wear its spare wheel on its tailgate, even though the car in our spy photos doesn’t have one fitted.

The look draws heavily from the Suzuki iV-4 concept SUV shown at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show, and although the concept has already spawned the new and much bigger Suzuki Vitara SUV in Europe, the YBA will be an even more compact version. It retains the tapering window line, angular tail-lamps and the ‘open-mouthed’ lower air dam. Obviously, some things have been toned down, like the grille, which is a simpler one with horizontal instead of vertical slats. Overall, the YBA’s look is a good mix of sporty and rugged. The wheel arches don’t have excessive cladding, the windscreen is steeply raked back and, thanks to a floating C-pillar, the glasshouse gets a cockpit-like look.

Like the YRA hatchback, this one will also use Maruti’s existing range of engines. As with the YRA hatchback and the Ciaz sedan, this YBA crossover will have to pack in a lot of equipment to seriously take on the EcoSport, so here too, expect a lot of equipment. .....

Aha, so MSIL is finally in the game of compact SUV.

On face of it, the YBA looks good and will give a tough time to its peers with a VFM Suzuki tag on it. It seems that the premium hatch back segment will collapse in next 5 - 10 years and after the B1 segment, people will go for compact SUV / lookalikes and then the C1 / C2 segment.

It can also happen, which is true even now that C1 / C2 segment buyers are also doing cross shopping in the compact SUV segment.

The segment is also good from the NCAP / safety point of view as the front height / bonnet height increase has been recently added in the revised standards and this segment is already geared up for the same.

Well to be honest the Swift already looks "muscular" enough. Just make it taller.
And what is with this sticking the spare wheel on the rear - like SUV?
What 4 meter advantage are we talking about then?
How can the govt agencies have such stupid brain?

I appreciate the sub-4m rule, but then the vehicle's length evaluated should be end to end. And thus include the spare wheel also!

Is the compact SUV based on the Swift? If yes, then it would carry the same poor safety of the Swift. That with the same 1.3L MJD motor with 90ps. Doesn't sound very exciting.

Well, not a bad effort. I did search Zauba website and came across information about this car being powered by the Fiat 1248cc motor which was made available to Indians 7 years ago IIRC. This car will have it without DPF and with high power output ( I guess it means 90 bhp format ).

What does amaze me the word "Peugeot". Not sure why Peugeot is mentioned in here. The unpacked Motor vehicle cost is also not on lower side, hope that its OTR top end version.

This is a very positive development and hope Maruti loads it with equipment to take on the likes of Ecosport. Lets say Maruti should start with the engine and give YBA a bigger engine than the 1.3L, may be the 1.6L , also with the YRA B+ hatch and the ciaz.

The compact SUV from Maruti looks good from the pictures and and don't see any glaring quirks , the spare wheel seems to have a mount towards the right side of the tail gate rather than at the centre.

Talking again about equipment levels i am not too optimistic if it will match Ecosports - it has never been Maruti s philosophy to give equipment rich cars

For eg, the Ecosport titanium(O) has 6 airbags and for Maruti to match that on say a similar variant of its compact SUV - i must be dreaming.

Looks are subjective but the Polo-like clean front tells me it might not be as quirky as most cars in the market today.

Maruti isn't going to come up with a fully loaded compact-SUV like the Ecosport. Its going to be the poor man's compact SUV because it would most definitely be priced lower than Ecosport - we all know, Maruti means kitna deti hai rather than kya safety rating hai for most buyers.

However, I'm no fan of compact SUVs because its nowhere, neither a hatchback nor a proper SUV, a wannabe SUV maybe. People might be better off buying lift kits and fat tyres for their Swifts and i20s as someone suggested.

It is mentioned as ZDi+. Considering the price difference of different versions of Ciaz, an LXi version of this car may cost 7L.

Yes. Normally, D13A is the Suzuki name for the Fiat-sourced 1.3L Diesel engine.

BTW, "Peugeot" is used when mentioning wire-rope assembly, not when the complete vehicle is mentioned.

We can safely guess that the headlamps are made simple-looking to dis-associate it from the Swift. Is the protruding thing at the rear the mount for spare wheel?

BTW, if we stretch the length of this car by about 18% (thereby making it a car of length around 4700mm), I guess this becomes a pretty good looking SUV!

The sub 4 meter rule also limits the engine size to 1.5 , so most probably it would be 1.3 engine.

As far as design goes, my personal opinion is it looks promising and could give a tough fight to Eco sport - provided it comes with a good build quality, but the launch seems to be in 2016- that's pretty far away.
