I hope you are joking :) Fiat Premier Padmini was one of the most stolen cars across India because they could be easily sold in the metros as taxis.
My dads Padmini was stolen from Gujarat in late 80s & fortunately caught at the state border as they had been on alert! But he treated that as some bad shagun & sold it :Frustrati

What on earth is a E-Immobilizer? Fiat India claim you can disable the engine in case of theft. How can you do this after the car is stolen? The same has not been mentioned for the Linea so is this something specific to the Punto. |
Not sure about the e-immobilizer, but though the Evo page touts the randomised key-codes as something new, it is already in my 2010 Punto's manual (and much older internationally I think). The car recognises your keys individually and generates a unique code for each key each time, which the key should use next time. The car comes with a card with a unique number, and to get a spare key, you need to quote that number to Fiat. Internationally this rolling-code system is also used for immobilisers.
If this really works, non-violent theft is impossible unless you leave the key in the car... or unless the system is
cracked (the link is worth a visit). Car-jacking is still possible but I haven't heard of this in India (one rarely hears about car theft either).

And I hope you are joking! How come a model introduced in India in 1964 became a thing of the 'recent past'? 50 years not good enough?
Anyways, not sure about the e-immobiliser (however the immobiliser in FIAT models come with rolling code if I remember correctly), but even I haven't heard any Punto/ Linea models stolen. Or even the Palio for that matter. May be due to the lower numbers/ lack of demand in the used car market to profit a thief.

It is a different subject about a car being stolen. I am more interested if the tech actually exists on the new Punto Evo. I guess we will have to wait and see after someone picks it up.
Please note that there is no mention of this on the Linea.
There are no thefts reported about linea and punto as the thief is never going to get benefited by them. Who will buy them again. Low resale - high risk for the theif. :)

Its great to know about your good experience with the 1.2 Punto. The opinion was strictly personal.
The thing is having the heaviest car in its class with least amount horsepower doesn't make the cleverest of idea. Especially in 2014 where most of the companies like Honda or Maruti or Hyundai are having competitive petrol engines on sale. Even Tata has understood the fact that something distinctive needs to be thrown to the market to make any sort of impact in the petrol hatchbacks segment. They came up with a turbocharged engine. I feel Fiat isnt as competitive in Petrol segment as it is in the diesel segment for the Punto. While the pricing is very good we know how Punto diesel is way more popular compared to its petrol counterparts relatively.
Was just going thru the wiki link for Punto and it is mentioned there, the same 1.3MJD 90PS does a 0-100 in 11.9 secs outside india. That is actually very good and keeps up with the competition. Of course it is from a 6-speed gearbox. Did FIAT miss a trick here by not introducing the 6-speed gearbox? Some might argue why a 6-speed for 90hp, but looks like it does make a difference.

Hi,
Even I was browsing through the net and found these stats.

Now we all know that the Indian Punto's numbers are completely different. How much of that can be attributed to the gear ratios (Does anybody know the ratios on the Indian trim) and how much on the tuning. Even the 75 bhp Euro spec Punto seems faster than our 90 bhp one.
Is it just about upgrading the gearbox? If yes then how feasible is that?
I had TD'ed Linea 2014 model last week and found interiors being shared between Evo and new Linea. Welcome change I would say.
When I asked the SA if I buy new Linea but want to retain old Linea front grill (by changing the bumper) as I felt dimensions and lines are still same and change of bumper can be easy. He was actually taken aback trying to sell me "value" of new design.
How I wished Fiat didn't make big changes in Linea and Punto in front grille styling. This is a chrome overdose on otherwise good changes.
Edit : Any news about Avventura? I read "speculative" news on NDTV mobile app today morning :)

For 75 BHP MJD, the gear ratios are as follows. Except for the first gear, it is the same. Final drive ration differs a bit too.
1st: 4.273
2nd: 2.238
3rd: 1.444
4th: 1.029
5th: 0.767
Final drive ration: 3.93:1

For those who want petrol refinement, better pickup & smoothness but willing to overlook economy, 1.4L Punto is good. |
I am driving a 1.4 for close to five years now. If 15+ kmpl is on the lower side, that is what I get on highways with speed mostly at 80-90 kmph. On a 400 km trip of mixed road conditions, 13.5 kmpl is what I get on the MID at the end of the trip.
Yes, it gives just 9-11 kmpl in city.
This is just my personal experience.
OT: The thread for a closer look at Punto Evo ends up scrutinizing other/all FIATs. :)

I was honestly not aware that Punto's Performance differed so much across various regions. Everytime I have browsed International portals of Fiat, I never really looked beyond the Engine capacity & power output, which appeared to be similar to Indian version. :Frustrati
Seriously guys, after seeing this data, I am convinced that Fiat have ruined the Golden opportunity of contesting for the pole position.
My Wishlist for Punto Evo:
- 75hp MJD - Same gearbox as mentioned by
Vibbs with PERFORMANCE
Top speed: 165km/hr & Acceleration: 0 - 100 km/h 13.6s.
- 90hp MJD - 6 speed gearbox with PERFORMANCE
Top speed: 175km/hr Acceleration: 0 - 100 km/h 11.9s clap:
Now, Fiat can Truly call the 90 HP MJD as Sport !!
P.S - With these specs & the legendary Fiat dynamics, Swift/Polo would have really felt the heat.

I doubt it. With the car weighing >100kilos over the immediate competition, no matter what tune that engine is, it is doomed.
Not just the small Fiat, the Linea weighs in at about the same as the Corolla. The Skoda Octavia weighs only 100kilo over the Linea. Ever heard of a petrol car weighing more than a diesel? Not normal but that is the case with a Fiat.

Could you please tell us, how many seconds more it would add to the 0-100 dash and how much reduction will be there in the top speed, if I add 100 kilo additional weight to the same car ?.
Punto 90 (1144kg )actually weighs 64kg more than Swift diesel (1080kg). And at the same time cars like i20 crdi (1212 kg) and Vista D90 (1180 kg) are heavier than Punto! So its the Punto that enjoys best power : weight ratio among these.
