re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

I think it can just be a rumor and nothing more about the 2 cylinder diesel. I think it will be a 3 cylinder DDIS like the Beat Diesel !

Based on the sound from the videos, it is certainly 2-cylinder.

That sound is not enough to judge anything. In a test car maybe the sound deadening material is not in place, maybe the car has done a lot of mileage and oil is not changed to test something, maybe they are just testing the engine and its performance first and NVH is not even in the picture now. Maybe the engine is just cold. A sound from a video won't prove or disprove anything.

Keep a 4 cylinder DDIS in bad shape or record a video when its started the first time with a cold engine and similar video can be made from that too.

Maruti Suzuki’s new 793cc diesel engine is all ready to hit the Indian market. The Celerio is the first hatchback to get this engine and at the moment it is undergoing its final stage of testing in Japan. The Celerio and a new commercial vehicle from Suzuki will be available with this new diesel engine.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio will come with three trims, LDi, VDi and ZDi. The VDi will come with an option of ABS too. This is Suzuki’s first in-house developed diesel engine and it will be the smallest diesel engine in India. The 793cc diesel engine will churn about 50bhp of power and it will be coming with common rail diesel technology. The launch of the Celerio is about three months away. The company has just sent six prototypes to complete the final testing in Japan

Its no more rumor now, its official that Celerio is coming with 800 CC diesel motor.

This is all new segment in creation by Maruti. If this succeeds, there is no way stopping for Maruti. They will make thousands of these cars monthly. I am curious to know what kind of average it will give. My guess is above 25 will be there for sure.

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

This move of plonking the Celerio with a diesel may effectively kill another blockbuster from MSIL- Wagon R.

So, while it may look attractive on paper, would Maruti really risk this gamble?

Wagon R is selling an average 12xxx month on month with decent waiting periods.
Celerio AMT already has a 6-8 month back log and a diesel may have 9-12 months waiting period.

So, fail to see what's the fun of killing a goose that lays golden eggs month on month with a new product that may effectively result the volumes and also the margins!!

Why would a diesel Celerio be of any threat to a petrol Wagon-R.

The cannibalization of WR sales is evident.

There is a large chunk of WR owners(including me) who have invested in the CNG version considering high monthly mileage.

Given the choice, a lot of these owners could go in for the Celerio instead of WR CNG and hence result in depleted sales for the Wagon R.

No Maruti Diesel is available in the B2 segment and hence due to lack of choice, prospective owners are opting for either the CNG/Petrol or GM Beat and the likes.

Celerio Diesel can plug that gap very well and this is how even the petrol only Wagon R sales could take a severe beating.

So you meant the CNG version cannibalization. True. That can happen. With the current prices of CNG it is becoming unattractive very fast. But I don't think it sells that much even now. Even if the sales shift from Wagon R to Celerio, Maruti would still be happy as the Diesel Celerio is bound to be more expensive than a Wagon R. Money stays with Maruti.

@Dryice

Money certainly stays with Maruti. Yet, the once stellar performer may die a slow death.

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

Just wondering that with Diesel being deregulated, will there be any takers for this late Diesel engines by Suzuki. They could have instead worked on a 1.5L diesel which can be plonked on wide variety of cars ritz, swift, ertiga, ciaz and upcoming SUV etc.

Diesels are definitely costly to maintain. Celerio owners are mostly going to use it for city drives only

re: Maruti Celerio to get 800 cc diesel engine. EDIT: Now launched!

At the end of the day if Maruti is selling cars, then they are happy. They wont bother much which car is selling most. Also why you guys think that Wagon R sales will go down? In fact i see if this engine gets success in the market, it will come in Wagon R & Alto as well. Customer will get more options & Maruti will get more sell. Win win situation for both i guess.

I think MSIL will eventually plonk this diesel in Wagon R as well. But, we are going OT here. Plonking it in a Celerio is a good move and will definitely set the ball rolling for others to follow.

If only Tata went ahead with a more serious plan of Nano-D! Sigh! What a wasted oppurtunity!

More speculations on the Celerio diesel,
  • Maruti LCV Delivers power around 38 PS whereas Celerio Diesel could be Deliver power around 48-52 PS
  • Maruti Celerio Diesel test vehicle given max. mileage upto 33KMPL with AC
  • Maruti Celerio Diesel will launch in Manual Transmission only , No AMT for Now
