Toyota Kirloskar Motor Official Statement on Lockout Issue- 24th March 2014

We will keep our shifts running and the plants will be open for team members to join duty on the condition that they would sign the simple good conduct undertaking.

The company will welcome any steps that the Government of Karnataka can take to resolve the matter at the earliest.

The latest issue is that the wages hike being demanded by the workers is 4K but the management is stern for 3K.

They are asking workers to join the duty but for signing a good conduct paper and I guess the management has suspended workers for bad conduct.

It’s absolutely untrue that Toyota is running its plants using 1000 contract workers and 2000 apprentices. We have started limited plant operations with the help of non unionized team members, of whom majority are supervisors and engineers.

Ford is not far behind in having a lockout at its manufacturing unit too. Look at the article where the workers are frustrated due to lowering of their incentives for the year when production was higher than last year!

Workers have expressed their unhappiness through silent protests by not utilizing the company’s facilities such as transportation. They are upset over a 10 per cent cut in incentives .

However, there has not been any fall in production of vehicles at the Chennai plant, even though the domestic market is sluggish, Ford has been exporting its models, particularly the compact SUV EcoSport in big numbers, to take advantage of currency depreciation.

The company also said it had a valid and well-functioning employee participation forum with whom it enjoyed a strong relationship, and preferred to have those discussions within the company.

Seemingly a reasonable amount of production has started. I heard from the dealer that the Fortuner that I booked has been dispatched this morning

Toyota workers switch to relay hunger strike

A day after over a dozen workers on hunger strike were hospitalised following reports of deteriorating health and doctors’ advise against continuing with the indefinite fast, agitating workers at the Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) plants in Bidadi have called off the indefinite hunger strike.

Instead, they have opted for a relay hunger strike from Tuesday in the interests of the workers’ health and safety.

Any updates from the factory? The dealer stated it was not close to any resolution. Waiting lists seem to be long and there are no offers or discounts.
