First get the invoice price of the car. Also how old is the car. Refer to the image below as to how the LTT is calculated. Also remembr to add 11% cess to the calculated value.
For eg Say the invoice price is Rs 300000 and the car is 2 yrs old.
The tax on the vehicle is 0.13*0.93*300000 = Rs 36270
To the above value add 11% cess.

Thanks, that really is odd. Sure I have never heard of this before

Does anyone else know of such a scenario, where the vehicle gets an RC from a state other than the one in which it is registered? Is this something new that I don't know about?

Don't worry, there are a lot of folks here who thought this is not possible. But, this is why forums like this exist. Sharing of knowledge!

So now, you not only have heard, but also seen it! LOL! Also, this is not new, it's been there from like forever!

Same here. Did not know this. However, suppose if I buy a vehicle registered in another state and bring it to my state. I get the NOC from the parent state and apply for a change in ownership and offer to pay the road tax in my state for the same vehicle- without changing the number. Then I will need a new RC with my name printed on it, but with a registration number of another state. Wondering if it's possible?

Yes it is very much possible. I don't understand what's the confusion? Is there something I'm missing here?

In our case, one simple problem would be that, if I had to find out the information of this vehicle, which RTO website would I look for ? For example, to see the vehicle details with a KL registration, just go to http://keralamvd.gov.in/. Now, if I had taken the NOC from parent state, this would show up no information in their site. Where on earth would I find in which state this vehicle is now registered at ?

Infact, When I had paid LTT long time back, the RTO folks asked me not to worry about re-registration in case I wanted to keep my KL registration intact (Of-course I can't claim LTT refund later, that's something they didn't tell. I didn't care to ask for refund also when I brought it back).

Re: Case: Out of State Cars vs RTO Bangalore

One of my friends who transferred his Royal Enfield from WB34 to KA51 recently got a similar RC book, i.e KA RC book, with his original WB Regn Number. I am just imagining what would happen when he takes his vehicle back. His place does not even have smart cards

Aha! Thankyou for explaining! Now, let me try to answer this!

When I went for paying the tax and registering the vehicle, I had SURRENDERED my WB RC book and I also had to furnish a valid NOC from Kolkata RTO! So today, if you take the number embossed on the KA RC book that I have for my WB registered car, the RTO will get the entire "kundli" of my car and can trace me to my address in Bangalore.

To put things in perspective, say, if I jump a traffic light, the challan will come to my Bangalore address even though my car has a WB registration.

Also, tomorrow, if the need be, they also have all the documentaiton for this car from the WB RTO, so tracing the car orgins is a piece of cake for them.

Hope this clears the doubts!

Wow, I never knew that some place in Bengal doesn't issue smart cards. I remember in Kolkata they started issuing smart card RC books way back from 99-00 or maybe even before that!

When he takes his vehicle back, all he will do is enjoy, till the time his tax expires, if he has paid the LTT here in KA then, till 15 yrs from the date of regn, he needn't worry! After that all he'll have to do is to get the NOC from KA and pay the tax back in WB! AFAIK cops in Bengal are least bothered about all this anyway!! LOL!!

No, I was just thinking that if some cop apprehends his vehicle in his hometown, what would the look in his face be when my friend dishes out a Smart Card, that too with the WB 34 number

I believe Karnataka doesn't insist on issuing a KA number when a vehicle is re-registered; the state allows the previous registration mark to be reused. This was discussed on T-BHP a few months back in another thread, in the context of the large number of KL and TN commercial vehicles (buses, autos, pickups...) seen in Chararajanagar, Ramanagara, Mandya etc. districts.

Re: Case: Out of State Cars vs RTO Bangalore

LTT is mandatory, re-registration is optional (per KA RTO babus/touts).
Even if you re-register, getting a KA reg# is still optional. As the poster above said, you are registered in KA for all means and purposes, just with a non-KA reg#.

When I paid LTT in Bangalore for my M.P. registered car, I was told I can keep my number, with or without re-registration. I neither had any particular affinity to that number, nor did I want the RTO morons jumping in front of my car after I've paid up, so I promptly insisted for KA reg# to be provided ASAP.

One scenario might be someone not wanting to give up a special number they paid a bomb for in an auction in the previous state. KA RTO is accommodating that way (other RTO's may be too).

Re: Case: Out of State Cars vs RTO Bangalore

I have a question.
If I pay LTT and re-register with my DL number, can I claim refund from Delhi?

Since I'll be in Bangalore for 3 years, does it make sense to take refund from KA or DL?
What would be the procedure for the refund? I don't want to end up paying tax everywhere.

(The court case has been adjourned for a week, I'm waiting for the outcome. )
