We already have Mahindra E2O running, so why this worry. As numbers grow I very well fore see malls or hotels offering free charging to entice customers.
Sure would be difficult initially but will definitely improve.
I for one thing this will succeed and on its back our home grown EV.
And who knows just as out of nowhere we became an IT power house may be this repeats on this field because it is the initial days....fingers crossed...

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

If Tesla do enter the Indian market, then I hope it's only after following a thorough testing routine in local conditions (and doing modifications, if necessary).

Apart from testing their cars in the extremely hot & dusty conditions found here, they will also have to raise the GC and adapt the suspension to local roads. And I hope Teslas have adequate protection against rats, at least for the critical components.

Forget about Tesla coming to India delayed r not. I am happy at the way Govt of India responded to them. They are making best effort to get business to India. Have not seen any Govt doing this Before. A BIG THANK YOU TO THE PRESENT GOVT.

No doubt an excuse. But think about it from their side. When demand exceeds supply why not serve the easy markets like US, EU and china first. Once that is fulfilled then look at India. Even the numbers are big in those markets.

I am sure they will test in local conditions but remember California and Florida are just as hot as India. Some places like Arizona are hotter than India.

I'm glad the Government is responding quickly, but I'm ashamed at the same time that they have responded so quickly without even the knowledge of their business model. I'm sure Tesla can now even jokingly thank them for the waiver that Apple was dying for

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

Kudos to the govt being so proactive with their MakeInIndia twitter handle. I wish they were this proactive on actual business matters that count.
They want Elon Musk to be their poster boy for electric cars here but on the other hand they increase the tax on Hybrids and reduce them on SUVs with GST is contradicting. Even the FAME discount rebate on hybrids has/is being pulled out. Open up the hybrid and electric by supporting consumers and manufacturers with deep incentives atleast for a few years and watch things take off rather than anticipate a revolution by taking steps in the opposite direction.

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

Elon Musk explains why Tesla is not selling in India, gov says they should build a factory and confusion prevails!

With announcement still to be made on locations of 4 new Gigafactories, chances are high that India could be one of them.

Quote:
There seems to be some confusion over the difference between selling vehicles and manufacturing vehicles in India.

The commerce and industry ministry told Musk via Twitter that the foreign direct investment (FDI) policy would actually allow Tesla to sell, but apparently only if they are also manufacturing in India:
Quote:
While it’s not entirely clear, it sounds like they are saying that there wouldn’t be any sourcing requirements on parts as long as the vehicles would be actually assembled in the country.

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

As per today's Times of India (we get a Dak edition) most issues raised by Tesla have been resolved to their satisfaction. So maybe we now see them set up shop here.

It's not just the temperature alone. It's the conditions. Extreme heat & dust and repeated short distance driving in roads with chock-a-block traffic takes a different kind of toll on cars, when compared to high temperatures alone, even if all-electrics aren't affected as much as IC-engined cars.

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

Tesla in talks with global component makers for manufacturing in India. No time frame revealed yet.

Quote:
Electric carmaker Tesla Motors is in talks with component makers Germany’s Dräxlmaier Group and Italy’s Magneti Marelli to source electric parts for its India venture.
Quote:
Discussions are at an advanced stage as part of a global contract, which will allow the parts makers to supply to Tesla in India,
Quote:
If any global component maker doesn’t make those electric parts in India, it can buy it from the parent company and source it for Tesla

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

Here is an interesting conversation!

Even Mahindra wants some competition. Eager to see Tesla in India.

Although, I hope there is absolutely no JV of any sort between the two.

Competition zindabad!

I can assure you this bonhomie is only because EVs need electric ecosystem (infrastructure charging points) all across India to be accepted by common public. Now this required a mammoth investment. Tesla has huge network of such points in USA and Europe already and its open for all EVs for a service fee.

This is a 2 year old clip depicting growth of charging stations.

By April Tesla had 9000 charging stations and this number is estimated to grow to 15000 by end of 2017. Not just that as on May 2017, Tesla operates 5,487 superchargers in 848 stations worldwide.

Mahindra is also looking for this initial investment in India which is must for Electric cars to jump start in India.

Also, Tesla makes luxury EVs in worlds toughest market while Mahindra makes rugged budget SUVs for developing countries.Even the upcoming model 3 costs upwards of $30k which will cost in upwards of 30 Lakh in India even after assembly (counting the customs duty + GST). To bring costs down even to under 25Lakh, Tesla will have to shift a gigafactory to India which I don't see happening anytime in future.
Hence, There is no synergy as of now for a JV.

But I guess, Mahindra could buy powertrain from tesla in future (if Tesla releases one for sale for developing world in future, no such plans that I know of). Other than that, its all about charging infrastructure.

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

Seems with Trump going 'non Green' Musk is looking at India with renewed interest. What comes out of it, only time will tell. Watch Trumponomics and see.

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

If reports are to be believed, Tesla starts initial work of exploring possibility of sourcing parts to India.

Tesla in talks with global component makers for manufacturing in India.

I just hope this is a reality very soon. A good chance for us to get equal & ahead of America in green technology in the auto sector.

Re: Could Tesla launch in India?

Elon Musk announces 4 or 5 Gigafactories but refuses to divulge its locations.

Hints that they will be ‘close to the end customer’ and have ‘very high headcount’ around the factories.

Quote:
One of the new locations is expected to be in China, where Musk recently met with the Vice Premier. Another is expected to be somewhere in Europe, where several countries already launched efforts to attract Tesla and the thousands of jobs associated with a Gigafactory
