One interesting observation: "Motor cabs having cubic capacity below 1500cc and having purchase price value upto rupees 20 lakh", tax is 6% against a regular tax of 15%.

So if you buy a Jeep Compass 1.4 AT (O) at 19.4L ex, you can save a cool 1.75L on road tax if you register it as a motor cab.

Of course you will have to live with the yellow board and the frown on people's faces.

Current Road Tax rates for private cars in Kerala

While Kerala MVD launched a new snazzy website recently, clicking Tax Schedule leads to "Page not found". So went back to the Old.Mvd site and got the currently prevailing tax figures for cars at this link with the 5 slabs as below :
Jan 2014: Road Tax hiked in Kerala-keralaroadtaxcars2020.jpg

Please note that the RoadTax is calculated on top of the Ex-showroom price which includes GST starting from a minimum of 28%. So basically tax on top of tax.

The amount of taxes we pay on cars is insane. As if this wasn't bad enough, you then have to shell out toll for using roads, cess on fuel (apart from the already insane rates of tax/excise on the fuel) etc.

A whopping 32% of the 9.9L ex-showroom cost of an Ecosport Titanium 1.5D constitutes GST. Plus 11% RoadTax on the ex-showroom cost.
