The Volkswagen Group is planning an onslaught of SUV launches in the near future, with most of them being 5-seater compact ones.

Audi, Seat, Skoda & Volkswagen brands will be offering their own versions of a compact SUV based on the MQB platform, which will start with Audi's all-new Q1.

Volkswagen's upcoming compact SUV offering for India will be based on this architecture, taking cues from the T-Roc concept which was unveiled in 2014.

The spearhead for the Volkswagen Group’s compact SUV offensive is the upcoming Audi Q1. Scheduled to make its public debut at the Geneva motor show next March, it will precede similar-sized but lower-priced models from Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen, each with their own, distinct exterior and interior designs.

The starting point for the Q1 and its siblings is the short-wheelbase MQB platform, as used by the three-door Audi A3. It uses a 2601mm wheelbase, compared with the 2637mm wheelbase of the five-door A3. Audi engineers involved in the Q1’s development say its suspension has been developed to accept wheels of up to 19in.

Among the engines planned for the new baby SUVs is a range of three-cylinder and four-cylinder petrols and diesels ranging in capacity from 1.0 to 2.0 litres. They will be mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The VW Group’s new SUVs are expected to have similar dimensions to the Volkswagen T-Roc concept that was wheeled out at the 2014 Geneva show, at about 4200mm long, 1830mm wide and 1500mm tall.

Volkswagen is likely to launch the all-new Tiguan SUV in India next year, company officials have revealed at the ongoing 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Company officials said the Tiguan is likely to be launched in the Indian market next year, where the appetite for SUVs is growing at a fast pace.

It is understood that VW Group firm Audi is also planning to start assembling engines in India. The group will make an announcement soon on fresh expansion in India.

Volkswagen is planning to make India a low-cost manufacturing hub, which will cater to emerging and developed markets.

Also, as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make-in-India' initiative, the company plans to spend Rs 1,500 crore on localisation and producing cost-effective products.

The company is also looking to increase the production capacity at the Chakan and Aurangabad units in the next two years to over 200,000 units by 2018 and add more new models from the Chakan plant.

Will the ever expanding VW scandal mean that India specific product launches or even the low cost brand be put on the back burner/cancelled? Or would it spur VW to move more R&D and production here in an effort to save costs?

The new CEO has just announced that there is a savage round of cost saving coming into force in order to pay for the management of the scandal (recalls, replacements, law suits etc), hence the question..

Bottom line is that the German factories are overstaffed. Skoda, Audi and Porsche as well as China bring in the moolah.

The India-bound 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan is on display at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show.

Volkswagen India is scheduled to launch the Tiguan in international markets by April 2016, with an Indian launch scheduled for the third quarter of 2016.

Volkswagen to localise new-gen 2.0-litre diesel engine. Indication of future models for India to be of the MQB platform?

The engine has been designed for the modular transverse matrix or MQB platform architecture of the Volkswagen Group and will power a wide range of future models built on the platform.

The current models powered by the 2.0-litre EA288 engine in India are the Audi A3 sedan and the Skoda Octavia. Future models will include the new Skoda Superb, next-gen Skoda SUVs, the Audi Q2, the new Audi A6, the 2016 A4 (which will be showcased at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo), and the new Volkswagen Passat.

Besides, the 2.0-litre EA288 diesel engine is well placed to meet BS-VI (equivalent to Euro VI) norms which are likely to be brought forward to 2020.

One of my acquaintance running a car dealership in Guwahati informed me yesterday that Volkswagen's only dealership in North East India will be shutting down within a month since the owners have got dealership of another auto brand. If it is so, until a new dealership is appointed, it will be very frustrating for Volkswagen owners of the seven states.

In 2015, we had reported that Volkswagen was looking to increase its localisation levels for its 1.5L TDI engine, which powers the Volkswagen Polo, Vento and the Skoda Rapid in India. A few media reports claim that the company is likely to equip this motor with a larger turbocharger to increase its power and efficiency.

Volkswagen currently sources 25 major components such as the turbocharger, connecting rods, vacuum lines, flywheels and engine brackets from 18 local suppliers. The turbocharger in the present models is supplied by Honeywell. Now, Autocar reports that the company is likely to use a new, locally-sourced and bigger turbocharger that will bump up the engine's power to 110 BHP. The Polo GT, Vento and possibly the upcoming Ameo and Skoda Rapid are likely to get the 1.5L TDI engine in this state of tune.

The 1.5L TDI engine is produced at the Volkswagen plant at Chakan, near Pune.

Q) You unveiled the Ameo at the Auto Expo this year. What are your plans for India in the next one year?

Going ahead, there are two directions for the company. One, credible premium products and second, mass-market cars.

We are looking to bring down premium features to volume cars. This is what we are going to do with our new flagship, the Passat GTE, which will be here in the second half of 2016. It will be launched here in the plug-in hybrid version; we want to test it in India to be a forerunner in alternative drivetrains.

We will follow that up with the Tiguan SUV in early 2017 which is a real premium car. The Ameo is certainly not going to be the cheapest car in the segment, but it is going to be the best-looking car; the best driving car, with first-in-class features like auto-dimming mirrors, rain-sensing wiper, etc.

We're also looking into localisation. We have made substantial investments in the last two years -- about 170 million euros into our plant in Pune -- to introduce the Ameo and to introduce future localised engines.

Q) Indian customer is price sensitive. Are you then not looking at competing with Maruti and Hyundai?

Of course, we will, but purely on prices, we can't and we won’t. And it's not necessary. The segment is big enough and there are only three or four serious contenders.

Q) Ameo is an India-specific car but are there other markets that you are exploring for exports?

The Ameo is a car built in India, specifically made for India, because the funny rule of four metres doesn't exist anywhere else in the world, but there is a need for economy cars and there is a need for entry sedans in the world. So we are talking to various markets which may be looking for something like that. It will become a part of our global production supply system.
