This is the 116i which redlines above 6500 RPM
BMW 1 Series : Pictures & Launch Report-bmw-1-series057.jpg

AC controls & stereo system are not that pleasing to the eye.
BMW 1 Series : Pictures & Launch Report-bmw-1-series058.jpg

Fabric seats on the base variants, all manual adjustments. Extendable under thigh support omitted.
BMW 1 Series : Pictures & Launch Report-bmw-1-series059.jpg

Lot of storage spots seen between the front occupants. That's because of the missing iDrive and missing driver armrest!
BMW 1 Series : Pictures & Launch Report-bmw-1-series060.jpg

Seats are almost the same, apart from the fabric upholstery. Fabric inserts can be seen on the door pads as well. No rear AC vents.

re: BMW to launch the 1 Series later in 2013*UPDATE: Now launched*

30 lacs for a top of the line hatch add road tax etc on road will touch 35-37. This is going to push prices of 3 series, 5, etc higher and higher. Thanks to our leaders buying a dream car is just out of the question. I think Bmw just wants to push the basic trim the most I guess, don't see the need to launch a higher trim if valued at such levels.

True, it would make perfect sense to own a pre-worshiped 1er after couple of years at mouth watering prices.

I guess these should be in the used car market down the line 3-5 years or so.

Cheers..!!

BMW 1-Series hatchback launched

Link to News Section

BMW has just launched the 1-Series hatchback in India. One petrol variant and three diesel variants make up the 1-Series range in India. BMW has gone with a diesel variant bias for the 1-Series, in keeping with the demands of the luxury car segment, which favours diesel engined cars. The 1-Series hatchback will be built at BMW India's Chennai assembly unit, from imported completely knocked down (CKD) kits.

BMW 1 Series : Pictures & Launch Report-2013-bmw-1series-hatchback-1.jpg

Here's a variant-wise round up of the pricing that the 1-Series comes with for the Indian car market. All prices reflect ex-showroom Delhi figures,

Petrol 116i - Rs. 20.9 lakhs

Diesel 118d - Rs. 22.9 lakhs

Diesel 118d Sportline - Rs. 25.9 lakhs

Diesel 118d Sportline Plus - Rs. 29.9 lakhs

The car's petrol engine is a 1.6 liter turbo petrol motor, the likes of which is also used on the Mini range. The motor churns out 136 Bhp-220 Nm, and is mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. The car gets a top speed of 210 Kph while the 0-100 Kph sprint is managed in 8.7 seconds. An ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 16.28 Kmpl is what the petrol engine 1-Series brings to the table.

The 1-Series' turbo diesel engine is a de-tuned 2 liter unit that's also found on many other BMW cars. On the 1-Series, this engine outputs 143 Bhp-320 Nm. Transmission and drive details remain similar to what's found on the petrol model. The diesel edges the petrol model in performance, marginally so. An 8.6 second nought to hundred sprint and a 212 Kph top speed are the key performance details of the 1-Series.

BMW 1 Series : Pictures & Launch Report-2013-bmw-1series-hatchback-2.jpg

An ARAI certified 20.58 Kmpl makes the diesel powered 1-Series one of the most fuel efficient BMW car sold in India. The BMW 1-Series will go head to head with the Mercedes Benz A-Class and B-Class hatchbacks. Price wise, BMW has the Mercedes Benz car models well covered. With BMW losing its leadership position in India to Audi, and slipping further to allow Mercedes Benz occupy the second place, the 1-Series is a crucial launch for the German luxury car brand.

Thanks for the pdf Akshay, very interesting! When I look at the additional features versus the price differential between the 118d, Sportline and Sportline Plus, I'm shocked! Even between the Sportline and Sportline Plus, the only additional stuff I can see for a whopping 4 lacs extra is -
  • Automatic anti-dazzle feature on mirrors
  • Lights package
  • Connectivity, Bluetooth and USB
  • Hifi Loudspeaker system
  • 17" alloy wheels
Highway robbery!

The difference between the base petrol and the top end diesel is almost 10 lakhs! That's one EcoSport right there!

I don't get it. Do xenon lights, bigger wheels, leather steering with contrast stitching, fancy stereo, etc add up to 8 lakhs?

It would have been nice if the petrol 116i came in the 'Sport' trim too.

re: BMW to launch the 1 Series later in 2013*UPDATE: Now launched*

I am confused, this was supposed to be an anchor product for BMW and they have given such a mediocre offering.

The base variant is seriously under equipped, No bluetooth, in 2013 for a 25 lakh car is shocking.
The top variants are touching 33, who's going to buy that?

And compared to the looks of the A class and the B or even the V40 or even BMW's own x1, this just looks so so.

They should have seriously given more thought to this car. My friends at TandT motors Delhi tell me about the crazy success the A has become. They were expecting only already luxury owners to get A's but majority is first time buyers who are coming from the top end Jetta, Laura range or Accord, Superb segment. Also with the momentum of the A the B is also doing quite well, more space with similar pricing. I only wonder what the CLA and the GLA will do to Audi and BMW. Mercedes is on a war path and with such half baked products like the 1 and the Q3, difficult times for the other two Germans.

Actually comparing the 1 series with its rwd drivetrain to an A class with fwd is a bit pointless. The 1 will handle better, go better and probably be more fuel efficient in real world conditions too.

As for whether or not the additional features are worth the price, that's what's great about being given the option. If they're worth it to one person he can buy the car equipped that way, to someone else to whom price is more important, he has the option too. Kudos to BMW, Mercedes has a lot to learn, even in 2013.

An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels and an ARAI certified fuel economy of 16.28km/l is being claimed. 0-100k/h takes 8.7 seconds and the top-speed is 210km/h.

The diesel 1 Series, 118d, gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder motor that we’re accustomed to seeing in the X1, 3 Series and the base 5 Series. With a tuning optimized for economy, the 118d produces 143bhp and 320Nm. The 8-speed auto and rear wheel drive arrangement is maintained while the ARAI rates it at 20.58km/l. 0-100km/h takes 8.6 seconds and the top-speed is 212km/h.

  • BMW 1 Series Diesel 118d Sportline Plus – INR 29.9 lakhs
All prices are ex-Showroom
While the Sportline gets 17-inch alloys, the Plus gets 18-inch and the other editions do with 16-inches.
The spec sheet from BMW shows that the base cars come with 16" wheels, the sport with 16" in a different style and the sport plus with 17" in a different style again with wider, lower profile rubber.

Re: BMW to launch the 1 Series later in 2013*UPDATE: Now launched*

Are we going to be treated with the official Team-Bhp review anytime soon? That would be awesome .

IMO, the 1 series should be worth the moolah. It's quicker than the A-Class, has rear wheel drive, and has multiple options to choose from.
In contrast, the A-Class is slower, front wheel drive. Dunno about the rest, but if it was my money, I'd pick the 118d sportline.
Coupled with BMW's BSI 5 year package, that should make an awesome buy.

Re: BMW to launch the 1 Series later in 2013*UPDATE: Now launched*

With the discounts upto 5 lakhs on the 3-series, wouldn't this pricing tempt new buyers to pick up a 320d instead of a top spec 1-series?

I'm sure potential buyers of the 1-series will be tempted to upgrade to the 3-series instead of picking up a hatch in a country like ours where the sedan offers a more premium buy.
I don;t wish to start a hatch vs sedan debate, but I couldn't help thinking it.

The base model is really base. 23lakhs ex showroom and you get cloth upholstery, no xenons, no climate control, no iDrive, no sunroof, no bluetooth, no USB and some other small stuff missing.
