Renault and Nissan should bring in the fully electric Leaf to Indian market for around 12 lakhs . It will be a game changer for the whole auto industry .

Renault should focus more on increasing production capacity, dealership network and improve service. Before launching new models to take on market leader Maruti Suzuki, Renault needs to get the basics right. Kwid is a good car and priced very competitively. Renault couldn't make use of the opportunity due to component vendors and limited production capacity. Alto sales doesn't seem to be affected at all by kwid. Anyways it's good to see more competitive products from Renault. But as I said before, without getting the basics right.. Renault can never dent maruti suzuki sales.

Rumour: Renault-Nissan working on CMF-A based compact sedan

In the last 1 year, the Renault-Nissan partnership has delivered two important products, the Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-GO. Both these low-cost hatchbacks are based on the CMF-A platform, which was developed under the partnership of the French and Japanese automakers. Now, reports suggest that the companies have started executing plans of developing a compact sedan based on the same platform.

Though information about the CMF-A sedan is scarce at the moment, sources close to the developments suggest that the company's design centres have already started working on the new sedan's looks and profile. Reportedly, Renault-Nissan's product planners have been adamant that the new sedan is given a ground clearance of 180 mm, which is becoming a hindrance for the designers to make the car look proportionate.

But the interesting part of it all is that Renault-Nissan engineers are reportedly developing a budget-friendly mild hybrid system for the CMF-A sedan, which will be similar to the SHVS system that Maruti Suzuki is offering in the Ciaz and Ertiga.

“Once the Kwid electric works in China, there's no reason you're not going to export the car to India, to Brazil, to the Middle East.” Ghosn said

Ghosn also mentioned having driven the Kwid electric prototype, implying that the car is at an advanced stage of development.

Autocar India has learnt the Kwid EV will be called the ‘e-Kwid’ and will boast a range of 140km on a single charge – sufficient for intra-city commutes. What we can also confirm is that the e-Kwid will make use of a lithium-ion battery pack.

The e-Kwid, however, is unlikely to be a very sprightly performer with limited power from its electric motor.

Don’t expect Renault to be in a tearing hurry to bring the e-Kwid to India, though. Inadequate charging infrastructure aside, costs are a major issue. Renault engineers who we’ve spoken to have said that, at present, a typical EV costs at least 60 percent more to manufacture than its conventional engine-powered version.
