On must give the due credit to Hyundai for being proactive with their operation in India. They are fastest to bring the updates and the global launches dont miss the Indian sores. i20 has been a popular premium hatch and the new version will ensure that it is going to hold its position well for at least couple of years more.

Styling is now distinctively European but I hope the drive is also improved. Going by what Xcent and Grand reviews have to say, we should expect improved dynamics from new Hyundai

j/k. Car looks quite good overall. But 9L for a hatch. Not sure how that's going to go down especially with all the other hatches closing by the 7.5L mark. (I can almost hear the i20 fanclub running towards me with signs "the i20 is NOT your regular hatch" )

Had a quick look a the brochure yesterday.

As mentioned earlier, no DRLs on this version even in the top end. 5 versions, the top line-up being Sportz, Sportz (O) and Asta. No Asta (O) as of now nor sunfroof et al in any of the versions.

I was interested only in the diesel, so focused only on that. R16 tyres on alloys with Sportz (O) & Asta. Others come with R14 tyres on steel rims. Spare wheel across all models comes on a steel rim. I recall 60:40spilt seats and detachable rear head restraints were available only in Asta (not entirely sure of this though). Same goes for the illumination control for dashboard/ other interior lights. Park camera, if I recall right, was available in the top 2 models. Asta additionally has parking sensors as well.

Indicative price was 20-30K above the current version.

I think they have saved these features for the facelift/refresh model which they launch in mid of the life cycle of their cars.
But I am sure these features will be available in the international versions from the beginning.

As per MotorTrend, there are five variants of Elite i20 on offer - Era, Magna, Sportz, Sportz (O) and Asta. Also, they will come in 7 colors.

Era
It will be the base variant and comes with a black grille, central locking, smart pedal, wheel covers, 2-tone beige and black interior, blue interior illumination, gear shift, low fuel indicator, front power windows, manual air-con, power steering, clutch footrest and power outlet.

Magna
Apart from all the features in the Era, Magna has features like headlamp escort function, keyless entry (foldable key), front grille with chrome, body colored outside door mirrors and handles, rear parcel tray, sunglass holder, front arm-rest, 2 Din integrated radio+ MP3 player, 1 GB internal memory, front and rear speakers, tweeters, Aux and USB ports, Bluetooth, steering controls, front and rear power windows, rear ac vents, cooled glove box, electrically adjustable outside mirror.

Sportz
Along with the above mentioned features the Sportz variant adds driver airbags, ABS, parking sensors, rear camera, fog lamps, impact sensing auto door unlock, electrochromic inside rear view mirror, rear defogger, turn indicators on outside mirrors, leather gear knob, leather wrapped steering wheel, height adjustable drivers seat, CD player, automatic air-con, tilt and telescopic steering, electric auto folding outside mirrors.

Sportz (O)
Along with the above features this variant has clutch lock, smart key, chrome outside door handles, diamond cut alloys, push button start/stop.

Asta
The top-end trim, along with the above mentioned features has passenger airbag, auto headlamps, steering position reminder, service reminder, parking sensor display, auto unlock function, 60:40 split rear seat, adjustable rear headrest, rear wiper and washer and 2nd power outlet.

Surprisingly there is no mention of DRLs and rain sensing wipers.

Does anyone has the information about the fuel efficiency of the new elite i20?
Also does the asta variant(Diesel) gets the speed sensitive door locking this time around? Last time it was just the asta(o) that got the feature

No surprise. Shahrukh Khan will feature in the TVC and other promotions of Elite i20. He tweeted working on a Hyundai shoot on 5th August. Has to be for Elite i20.

From the rear pic it looks like the reverse light (there is only one) is set exceptionally far to the right. I hope they have the focus set up right else one will not see anything to the left when reversing in the dark. What's with this design? I'm liking it less each time I see it

Looking at the brochure hyundai is done just about ok job. This car doesn't feature anything substantial that wasn't available in the outgoing model. In fact they have simply cut down on many features:
1. NO all disc brake setup- IMO this was one of the understated points but i20 provided with all disc brakes and now discs in front and drum at rear.Just like every other hatchback.
2. NO speed sensitive Auto Door Lock- Now this is a feature that must be provided. In fact most of the companies like VW and Maruti are providing this feature but hyundai doesn't listens to its customers I guess.
3. NO rain sensing wipers- Its like going back to the old school. After providing this feature on the previous generation model. I don't understand why they are not providing this even on the top of the line Asta variant.
4. NO AT variant- Last time hyundai updated i20 I really liked their approach of providing a petrol variant with automatic option. This time rather than providing this option with diesel they discontinued it all together.
5. No Engine Upgrades- Hyundai hasn't done anything with the engine or the power trains. That is where it's going to face stiff competition from upcoming POLO GT TDI the power of which simply blow every other option out of water.
6.Pricing- The pricing is at least 30000~40000 costlier than the outgoing model. Close to 8 lacs (ex showroom in punjab).
Only thing that's really good addition is the inclusion of 16" alloy wheels with good 195 tyres.

The Magna variant looks the most VFM, but what's shocking is that only the Sportz variant gets ABS and only driver side airbag. There are two variants below it sans ABS.

And for passenger airbags one has to go for the top end variant. Looks like Hyundai has thoroughly studied the typical Indian buyer mindset and went on a cost cutting spree.

Maybe it's just me, or the photo has been taken from that extreme angle, but doesn't the rear window look to be set TOO high than the rear passenger's view, similar to the Verna?

If it's indeed the case, it would be really uncomfortable and claustrophobic for the rear passengers. The rear seat also seems to be too low, which might hamper under-thigh support as well.

The variant-feature distribution hints to a superb entry variant price, and which might extend to steep prices for the top variants. The Sportz (O) and the Asta might be priced well above 7.5L+ OTR price range, which would take away the VFM factor from them. If the diesel Asta touches 9L+ OTR, it could find very few takers. Probably the XCent's pricing will make Hyundai position the Elite i20 as a super-premium hatch, and that might go against them.

Still, overall sales of even 4000-4500 units per month should keep them happy, now that they have 3 volume sellers in the 5L-9L price bracket.

I'm not impressed! Cutting down Airbags and making them available only from sportz (only driver side) and Asta (2 front airbags) is taking it down a notch. Besides, they should have gone the Honda way by making ABS standard acorss the range! And the Asta will come at what price? Close to 8lacs?

I don't like Hyundai anymore and my Ecosport suddenly feels very VFM.

The first-gen i20 was a pioneer in terms of safety features. Ever heard of six airbags in a car which costs less than Rs 10 lakh on-road? Well, the i20 offered the same. The new i20 gets an adaptive steering parking assist, a sensor which unlocks the door on impact, ajar warning for all four doors, a reverse camera with parking sensors and of course, four airbags.

Funny cause Overdrive says 4 airbags.

I don't think we should go with whatever vouchers are floating around.

Hyundai is one manufacturer who has been years ahead of the competition in terms of features and there is no reason for us to believe that the new Elite I20 will have less features than the old one. I am sure Hyundai will have more than one cards up their sleeves which will be revealed once the launch happens.

I like the looks of the new car though the black C pillar integration with the hatch is not done well but overall it looks more macho (which is what Indians like). The rear AC vents are definitely welcome as are the bigger wheels and thicker rubber. I20 always had great interiors and the new one looks even better than the old one.

I am curious to see if Hyundai does any improvement on the powertrain front. The older petrol model was underpowered (relative to the competition) and the diesel had a huge turbo lag plus a deep clutch. Also, it will be interesting to see if Hyundai has improved the toy-like steering and wobbly handling in the new car.
