Mahindra engine manufacturing facility shut since 8 days (April 2013)

Hi guys,

Came across this news article which says, the Mahindra's Igatpuri engine manufacturing facility has been shut for the last 8 days due to worker unrest.

Apparently 2 workers were fired by the management, one of which was a union leader after a fight broke out between 2 workers, post which around 1600 workers including contractual staff has been on a "tools down" agitation.

Mahindra has already taken a hit of 5000 engines over the past week. Both the parties are not budging from their stance, so hope this does not result in long waiting periods for their vehicles.

Any one knows more than what's mentioned in the article?

Re: Mahindra engine manufacturing facility shut since 8 days (April 2013)

Mahindra has revoked the suspension of two workers of its Igatpuri plant which was based on disciplinary action, after the suspended workers tendered a written and unconditional apology.

The President of Bhartiya Kamgar Sena, affiliated to Shiv Sena, Shri Suryakant Mahadik has given an assurance that workers would not indulge in any breach of discipline in the future. The management has also received a personal assurance from the Shiv Sena President, Uddhav Thackeray, that such instances will not be repeated in future by the plant workers.

The tool down strike at the company’s Igatpuri plant, which started on 9th April 2013, has since been withdrawn by the workers. Production will soon be restored to normalcy. Considering the normal pipeline of stock and the assembly of higher number of engines at other plant locations, there was no material impact on sales volume. Going forward, the company expects to build up the pipeline stock.

Isn't it shameful enough that Mahindra is even talking to an organization affiliated to shiv sena to resolve an issue ? Is it only me or does anyone else feel this is the right thing to do ?

These days it has become very hard and impossible to get right with unions . I feel they have done right for their business to run smoothly atleast they have been assured that no more indulge in any breach of discipline in the future . See what maruti has done now , they have come out of schemes for manesar employees in order to start the production . As my father is in this manufacturing business of auto parts , he tells me it has become a big problem related to union . If you have watch closely , Hero has made their plants in haridwar , honda has made it rajasthan , many others made it Gujarat . So atleast mahindra have not got fed up of all this problem and shifted else where and they haven been assured that no such problem will arise again .

Would this be like some sorta Mafia? The famous God Father novel comes into my mind when the Don's Lawyer speaks to the film producer threatening about an upcoming strike.
But honestly I think Mahindra has taken a practical approach and agreed to Shiv Sena's request. Am sure there will be much of Give & Take policy in this.
