We are speaking about the best drivers that the companies can find and most likely, these guys would also be getting professional training and closed track experience too. So the lesser number of accidents doesn't necessarily mean they are not going beyond the limits, its probably just that they are the ones who have the skill to push the limits without being irrational. Some details/speculations of the S101.



Mahindra’s new sub-4 meter compact SUV, codenamed the S101, will be launched in 2015. Featuring a monocoque platform more of a soft roader/crossover to cash on the current range than India is seeing!

Continuing with the soft-roader angle, the S101 is likely to feature the Quanto’s 1.5 liter Twin Turbo diesel engine while a petrol engine option could be a 1.2 liter motor that Mahindra and Ssangyong are jointly developing. The capacities of the petrol and diesel motors mirror those required for duty benefits on sub-4 meter cars

The engines are likely to mounted in a transverse fashion (East-West) on the S101 to allow a front wheel drive layout. The adoption of a front wheel drive layout will make the S101 lighter and more fuel efficient

Two highlights of the S101 SUV are likely to be the dashboard mounted gear shifter and a flat front seat that can accommodate 3 adults.

Mahindra needs to do a Bolero or a Scorpio in terms of design and overall looks. And if they do a Bolero in terms of sales with the S101, they wouldn't be complaining themselves. Lately, their designs have left me with mixed feelings and Quanto has actually made me cringe.

I don't want to put my wishlist here but the go anywhere rugged attitude was the DNA of Mahindra vehicles and thats gone missing in the hunt for sophistication. Maybe M&M needs to start keeping separate brands/DNA for its soft-roaders & offroaders and not mix them. That should help it position the new breed of soft roaders and will stop people from thinking of it only as a company that makes Thar, Bolero & Scorpio but trips when it comes to XUV, Xylo or Quanto.

This is not a good move by Mahindra. We are moving back to the age old days of Ambassadors and premier padminis which had front bench seats. Maruti/

Front bench seats and 2 co-passengers would definitely NOT be comfortable or appreciated. Is this being targeted at taxi/commercial segment? Private buyers would for sure NOT want to seat 3 at the front

Understand from a reliable source that the Mini SUV is not a possibility in 2014 they expect it to be released in 2015. Chances of 2014 Diwali release might be the earliest even if released in 2014.

Mahindra could tap into its existing diesel engine range and pick out the 1.5 liter-triple cylinder twin turbo diesel engine that’s found on the Quanto, and outfit this motor intothe S101 compact SUV.
The S101 compact SUV will be positioned well under the Ford EcoSport, instead rivaling B-Segment hatchbacks.

Report in the Economic Times on the mini SUV to be. It says the launch here might only be end 2015 or early 2016.
The article states that Mahindra has sourced a new auto transmission to be used in both Mahindra as well as Ssangyong products. Maybe an AT XUV in the near future then?

Am sure that will be shed when it moves into production. It does look very much like an after-thought. But must say it is a very interesting design and i think it might run the Grand Alpha close provided M&M launch it with their 1.5 Liter Dual Turbo Engine. Hopefully they keep the weight in check and not like the Quanto.

Mahindra to focus on the Soft roader, Plush UV 2 ( Utility Vehicle segemnt) like Ertiga , Ecosport and Renault Duster. The two planned SUV's code named S101 and S102 with pricing between 4.4 - 8.5 lakhs to address that. The UV 2 Segment accounts for nearly 30% of the overall market. Launches expected in 2015-2016.

I personally feel that Mahindra missed a trick in not showcasing a Korando in the Delhi Auto Expo. The Korando might have fit right in with the rest of the sub 4 meter class 'mini' SUVs (I haven't checked Korando's length though, might be slightly above 4m? ... experts to please clarify).
M&M products are valued a lot in smaller cities and villages (personally seen it) where the perceived 'rugged' nature and easy repairs play an important role in vehicle selection. I sincerely hope M&M don't neglect this core group of buyers in their quest to get 'soft-roaders' folk in their kitty.
