Tata Motors to slash Indica, Indigo prices as sales plunge

TATA is set to slash prices of its Indica hatchback and Indigo sedan as its battles falling sales in the domestic market.

The prices could be reduced by as much as Rs 50,000 and the minimum price cut on passenger cars (excluding Nano) will be around Rs 29,000,

will this make TATA cars a value proposition, I was of the opinion that their cars were more value for the cost

Desperate measures from TATA to combat desperate times

Somehow, the exit of Ratan Tata seems like a moral blow to the Company and everyone associated with it.

Though he avoided having much say in its day-to-day running, he was the lucky charm

Dread to think if TATA might let go off their Automobile business just like how they let go off their Airline Business, if this is a stock clearance sale or worse, closing down sale

It isn't that TATA's vehicles weren't affordable. They already sell for less than premium. People are of the opinion that TATA cars are not very reliable and their service centers are not friendly. After-sales do matter in this new India.

It might make a lot more sense if they'd just split their sales+service into different entities so the treatment meted out to taxi drivers isn't given to regular customers when at their service centers.

+1 to @hellmet.

And IMO, to increase the sales, TATA needs an all new vehicle. Not like the all new Safari but the vehicle should look new too.

Vista still looks like the decade old Indica, Indigo is no different. Heck, even the Aria looks similar. No doubt the radical looking XUV is a hit albeit similarly priced.

TATA needs to let go its fetish for curves. Some sharp lines can transform their lineup. They have all the resources to do it. All they need is the courage and commitment.
Remember TATA Prima.... anyone??

What is the source of this news? Are these offers you can get at the dealers or is Tata really slashing prices across the board?

I doubt this price-cut is going to make much of a difference to their sales! Tata Motors needs to concentrate more on making niggle-free reliable cars. They need new, fresh designs & let go of the Indica brand name.
I only see sales increasing when the Nano diesel gets launched.

Btw, what's the last count of the Indica variants? Even Karl Slym wouldn't know!

The modern day TATA's are considered pretty reliable. It is just that the design team has to work on getting their designs right. And not to mention the service aspect too!

The board room boys at TATA Motors should take up a re-branding exercise and work on a much trendy looking logo which would play a significant factor in reviving the brand.

Re: Tata Motors to slash Indica, Indigo prices as sales plunge

Suppose TATA really needs to improvise on their ASS. One of my colleague has nothing but horror stories to tell and the last time seems like a straw that broke the camel's back. pretty much disillusioned with their service even though the car has been maintained as per company's standards.
If TATA needs to survive no amount of price cuts will help it. They really need to improve their ASS and me more sincere to their existing customers. Probably a good way to start off will be to separate their service stations and have a different setup for commercial vehicles compared to personal vehicles. They cannot treat both these set of customers alike.

Re: Tata Motors to slash Indica, Indigo prices as sales plunge

Tata needs a brand new aesthetic design to change the fortunes. The aesthetic design has to be so tempting and so much ahead of time that people's mouth should water to get it at the first oppurtunity and if this is a first time right product in terms of reliability and supported with good after sales service it will surely revive Tata's fortune.

For eg. I can quote how Yamaha FZ revived Yamaha's fortune in India. One launch changed Yamaha India's fortune overnight.

Re: Tata Motors to slash Indica, Indigo prices as sales plunge

This is a SAD news because TATA cars always packed a punch & VFM quotient for most of their line up except few products like Aria which later corrected the prices to a good extent.

As someone said, I am doubtful whether the price slash is going to help them. This is what I think, they should do

1. Rejig the line up, shuffle the features and price those variants better. This will stop people from a direct comparison on how much price is cut. This will NOT look like a frustrated effort too.

2. Restrict their variants / models for taxi registrations.

3. Start new A$$ for commercial registration vehicles; this could be easily achieved by providing a different entry & exit for taxi vehicles in the existing A$$ facilities itself. Make sure that area is completely shut off and NO space sharing between private owners with respect to cars or waiting lounges.

4. Put their BEST SAs to deal with private owners and train them to better empathetic with the customers.

5. Make sure their future products do NOT bear the Indica/go badges at ANY cost!

6. Include a 5 year / 1,00,000 kms unlimited warranty by default for the next 3-4 products to gain customer trust on reliability of the products.

7. Consistent feedback & product improvements like what M&M did with XUV, for every new products especially.

8. Very strong customer centric behavior from high ups, may be one separate division should work towards this and have something like MD @ Ford kinda mail box for quick issue resolutions.

9. Start a new branding for commercial vehicles and give the taxi versions a slight make over, so as NOT to resemble the private registrations car on the same platform. I believe this could be achieved by means of a different badge, grill, headlight design, bumper design, tail light designs (like how Verito was designed from a Logan). Keep the taxi registration open ONLY for the taxi brand.

Re: Tata Motors to slash Indica, Indigo prices as sales plunge

It seems the sales volumes crashing has had an effect on the Tata management. They have cut prices hoping to boost sales. Let us see what happens in tue coming months. However, this is only a band aid cure at best. The fact remains their A$$ hurts them and the image they have of using their version 1 cars as test models with the guinea pigs being us. I know a lot of people who refuse to buy any Tata model until it is at version 2 stage

Also in today's paper it was stated that Toyota has overtaken Tata as the country's 4th largest vehicle maker. All the more signs of desperation from the Tata camp. What's next - a management rejig? I wouldn't be surprised.

Cheers!

Re: Tata Motors to slash Indica, Indigo prices as sales plunge

Although it is a matter of argument whether the present condition of the company is due to quality niggles in the products or due to the service centre experiences. however there is no denying that the present lineup of vehicles in the TATA portfolio have long outlived their lives.

Indica brand was a very value for money product in maybe 2003 (launch of the V2 version) in the absence of serious competition.

What TATA needs is a all new product (however they cant afford to make the same mistake as Aria). The present company image may not sustain a launch of a luxury product.

The company is in a good position to launch a all new product in the entry level or maybe the premium hatchback/sedan category by considering cars such a swift and the dzire as benchmarks.
