My reference is Polo's normal 1.2L 3 cylinder engine. I have always liked Polo as car but felt it to be under-powered. Both TSI and GTD will offer significant performance improvement over regular Polo. I know these engines are not going to break any acceleration records and one can argue that these are the engines with which Polo should have been launched to begin with.

I've been pondering on that point for a while. Read somewhere in this forum that the difference in weight is 75kgs (vento and polo) with the weight of the Diesel engine coming in, how much difference would it actually make in terms of performance?

Sure
But the answer to the question, "how will it feel to drive?"... is not a mystery. That was the point I was trying to make

Negligible! It allows you to get into the 1.6 Tdi club for cheaper $$$ than Vento..thats all.

Yes, hatch-sedan weight difference usually anywhere from -15 to +50 kgs approx. Verito hatch is actually heavier than the sedan.

75 kgs is on the high side for such a B-seg car.

From the e-brochures of Polo and Vento
1. Polo HL Diesel : 1145 Kg
2. Vento HL Diesel : 1220 Kg
Difference = 75 Kg

The Polo shown above comes with a 3 pot engine. A 1.6 D in a Polo will make it heavier.

I am not challenging the info posted by D'Artagnan.

I suppose a Polo 1.6 HL will be similar in weight to a Vento 1.6D Trendline..roughly

Thats a good point.
I think in that case I think I am gonna resist the temptation of taking GTD next week and stick to my original choice and wait for GT TSI. I will get TSI engine + DSG at roughly the price of GTD with manual transmission.

This might seem like a shot in the dark (as of now) but a similarly specced Polo in South Africa weighs 1171 kgs making it about 26 kgs heavier than the Polo Highline here. Here's the link :

http://www.vw.co.za/en/models/polo/t...7f2ac53c324771

Performance:

0-100 quoted is 10.4 seconds
Top speed 189km/h

Performance from Indian Brochures:
1. Polo 3cyl Diesel
0-100 : 14.4
Top speed : 164.1

2. Vento
0-100 : Not mentioned
Top speed : 186 km/h

re: VW Polo 1.6L GT TDI coming EDIT: Now launched

Test drive.
Seen the car in flesh. It looks exactly like any other Polo. Similar to GT TSI, there are small GT logos. As we already know, it is MT.

There was no specs sheet. So I do not know what PS specs are. But I could take a brief test drive.

This car has no turbo lag. It pulls cleanly. Turbo comes gradually and smoothly in action. I could not go beyond 4th gear, 60-70 kmph. But it was evident that it has lot of power that compares with Vento. So my guess is, it gives out full 105PS of power. It is difficult to say whether this one was more powerful (due to power/weight ratio) than Vento TDI in such a brief drive.

Though I did not have back to back drive, Polo GT TDI appears to be a bit above i20 crdi in terms of power.

Overall, this ticks all the boxes in terms expectations we have.

Hey that's fantastic. Is there any other visible changes from the GT TSI? And is it the same 5 speed MT? What is the ex showroom price they quoted?

Thanks for the details. Any idea if the car has ESP?

So it's only a manual transmission as mentioned earlier if only it was coupled with the same auto as in the TSI , that was one fantastic gearbox during the test drive.

So which one would you say is better, purely in terms of fun-to-drive? The TSI has a wide power band and the rev-happy engine.
The TDI, on the other hand has much more torque, so it will pack a bigger in-gear wallop.
