Even an SUV is being readied for the Geneva motor show based on the UP! Instead of the bland hatch, this may look a bit more appealing, IMO.

Just spotted 2 VW UP! S here in kolkata along with a fleet of 2 polos and a vento.
One of the UP!s was a 2 door one. White in colour and MH registered.
One polo in the fleet was a TDI cross polo badged one.

Have they launched the UP already?

The cars were all fitted with differently coloured ball type if looking object in the antennas. Anyone has any idea what these are?

It is too early to be excited. VW Kolkata indicated that the UP!s in their cirrent form are unlikely to be launched because they will be too expensive for the Indian market. This is consistent with the noises in the press. However, there has been an indication that the yet-to-be-launched Taigun mini SUV based on the same platform might find its way to these parts. Apparently the Polos and Ventos were also being test driven across India for figuring out an ECU remap. Possibly this is the same remap available to the current owners of Polo/Vento.

VW's E- UP,"first fully electric production vehicle," makes debut in Germany, to be shown at the Frankfurt show later in the year and orders open after that.

The lithium-ion battery is said to be packaged beneath the Up's floor and does not intrude into the cabin.

This new all-electric E-Up! has a 18.7-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers a range of 150 kilometers (93 miles, on the NEDC test) and has quick charging to get 80 percent of its charge back in 30 minutes. The port is VW's Combined Charging System (CCS) that supports DC and AC charging. With an electric motor offering 60 kW of peak power, the sprint from zero to 62 mph takes a lengthy 14 seconds, but once the go, the top speed is 84 mph.

I saw a couple of white colored VW Up's and a Polo Scout (a Polo having plastic claddings like the Fabia Scout) being tested in Jamshedpur last week. No pics as I was driving in the opposite direction. The Up looked good and the Polo Scout looked beefy. The VW badges were not covered.

More spotting of UP in Pune!

These are the latest pics of a test mule we caught in Pune. This was the regular 4 door version with some data-logging instrument placed at the dashboard.

The car was shod with wider tyres with interesting alloy wheels. The car looked back-heavy with a possibility that Volkswagen might be testing its suspension for India-type roads

A long-wheelbase version of the Volkswagen Up city car is in development. However, the new model is unlikely to come to all markets and "not China and not Europe". The new model is expected to offer more rear legroom than current three and five-door variants. The longer wheelbase is expected to benefit rear-seat legroom

It may be the size of an earlier Polo, but it's smaller than the current one. But even that is apparently destined to get bigger, too.


Is this LWB UP destined for India?

As of now, LWB Up! for Brazil. India launch unknown as of now. VW India will continue with refreshes/facelifts of existing models until 2015. Even if the LWB Up! comes to India, it is likely to happen in 2015 and beyond.

Volkswagen Twin-Up diesel-electric hybrid revealed -though not for India in the near future!

A plug-in diesel-electric version of the Volkswagen Up has been revealed, boasting 257mpg potential and an EV-only range of 31 miles.

Tipping the scales at 410kg above the XL1 at 1205kg, the Twin-Up receives an upgraded electric motor, a larger battery with an additional two modules raising its capacity to 8.6kWh and a diesel fuel tank boasting an additional 23 litres of capacity at 33 litres.

Power hails from the same turbocharged 800cc two-cylinder common rail diesel engine used in the XL1. Mounted transversely in the engine bay, it produces 47bhp and 88lb ft of torque. The combustion engine is supported by an electric motor developing a similar 47bhp – 20bhp more than the unit used in the XL1 – and 103lb of torque.

Altogether, the Twin-Up boasts a combined system output of 74bhp and 158lb ft. Drive is channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to the front wheels.

While still in the early stages of development, Volkswagen claims the Twin-Up accelerates from 0-to-37mph in 8.8sec, 0-62mph in a 15.7sec and reaches a top speed limited to 87mph in hybrid mode.

A more production-orientated version of the Twin-Up is planned to make its public debut alongside the recently unveiled all-electric e-Up at the Tokyo motor show later this month.

Volkswagen e-up! pricing announced (UK), kicks off at 19,250 GBP

Introduced in production guise at Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the e-up! will be sold exclusively with four doors and is powered by an electric motor generating 82 HP (60 kW) and 210 Nm (155 lb-ft). It comes with an 18.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which provides enough energy for 99 miles (160 km) "in optimum conditions." Charging the batteries will take less than nine hours from a 230-volt, 2.3 kW household socket.

In terms of performance, the electrified up! will do 0-37 mph (0-60 km/h) in 4.9 seconds, 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 12.4 seconds before hitting a maximum speed of 81 mph (130 km/h).

The e-up! is based on the High up! specification so it has heated front seats, cruise control and the Maps and More navigation system. It also comes with extra goodies such as DAB digital radio, rear parking sensors, electronic climate control system, Bluetooth connectivity, heated windscreen, City Emergency Braking system and a 6-speaker sound system.

VW Up! secures a five-star rating for adult safety in Latin NCAP crash test.

The glass hatch door is replaced with a steel tailgate for the Brazilian market and would be the probable car , if launched in India.

Other changes include roll-down type rear windows in place of the butterfly-type windows, a thicker C-Pillar and inclusion of turn indicators on the side rear view mirrors.

Yea, obviously so, so that they can launch their "India specific" models which are stripped out of all the best features available world wide. And finally sell it at a price which is not really economic for the market either!
