Re: SCOOP Pics! Volkswagen UP spotted in Mumbai

Overdrive mentions that the Volkswagen UP! which would be coming to India in 2013 would be based on the Cross UP! concept and to be priced at around 4lakh.

Re: SCOOP Pics! Volkswagen UP spotted in Mumbai

Isn't any one surprised that they were carrying it in a flat bed with absolutely no cover, what so ever. As though they wanted people to take note, and start talking already. It's a given that it will be 5 door! But I wish they bring the retro looking UP Space in page 1, though the wheelbase appears long and GC looks dangerous!

The Vehicle Looks nice and like a direct competition to brio. Although it will be interesting to see the at what price point is this car launched in India. Any Ideas regarding that?

Liked the car. I feel that 2 door cars will gain popularity soon.

2 door cars will gain popularity soon especially when they are priced around 7lakhs. It would be a youth's pic.

The design seems more appealing when compared to Honda Brio. This is more masculine than the Japanese hatch. Got a couple of questions in mind!

1. Any idea about the engine which is going into the hood?
2. Diesel an option?

7 lakhs for a 2-door entry-level hatchback? Easy on the peace-pipe, dude!

No offense mate, but there are full-fledged 5-door premium hatchbacks loaded with equipment at 7 lakhs that don't do well in our market! And 3-door-cars in India are far less practical than 5-door hatchbacks. Considering that 50% of the population buy hatchbacks as their first cars and expect it to accommodate their entire family in comfort.

A 3-door hatch may not make sense even at 5 lakhs! At that price, you do get entry-level sedans too. So going by that logic, the 3-door may not find its way after all. However, VW might bring in a limited number of them into our market, considering that the Pune plant may be a hub for exporting the Up! to other markets.

I agree. But I like the Brio as well. The Up! looks more rounded, though, while the Brio is an acquired taste.

My guess is that the 1.2 liter 3-pot petrol and diesel mills that you find in the Skoda Fabia and the VW Polo will go into the Up! Don't expect VW to build an engine for this particular car from ground up for the Indian market. Updated engines might find their way a few years down the line though.

EDIT: There is talk of the 1.2 mills being discontinued on the Fabia and the Polo and replaced with more refined 4-pot units. However, to keep costs down, VW might retain the 1.2 for the Up! in India. After all, the Up! will be positioned a notch below the Polo/Fabia, so th engine configurations should match and be appropriate.

The rear design was there ages back in the first version of M800. From what I hear, the cost of manufacturing a hatchback is really lowered if the boot door is not heavy

What ever it is, I really need a nice automatic version with diesel engine in a small car. Who ever is going to give it first, I will take it.

Looks decent, and spacious for its dimensions. Also the engines, and some of the switchgear, gear lever, etc. come from the Polo/Vento parts bin. Should sell well, if reasonably priced.

Re: SCOOP Pics! Volkswagen UP spotted in Mumbai

VW Up looks fabulous. The interiors are very practical and as one-77 pointed out, it uses some parts shared with VW Polo/Vento. The car reviewed looks to have a sunroof too. Great addition if it makes it to India.
3 door cars wont be practical in India and would only be pick of youth or people who want style statement. For regular Indians 5 door makes more sense.

The only thing which I think VW should shun for Indian Up is the black gloss finish on the dashboard as it would get marred with scratches and look a eye sore. It would also be a fingerprint magnet and dust would be more evident on a gloss finish.

Wow! The rear door seems to be really tiny. Ingress-egress might be a problem for rear passengers. Having said that 1.2l 3-pot petrol and diesel engines from the Polo in this and it should be a runaway success. German engineering this side of 5 lakhs.

Re: SCOOP Pics! Volkswagen UP spotted in Mumbai

Finally the entry level hatch segment in India will get a much needed touch of class. The five door version, which is most likely to make it to our shores has the potential to be an instant hit,if priced competitively. Looking forward to this one.

It is then probably going to be followed by the cheaper(?) Skoda CitiGo.
