BMW India launches pre-owned car division. Full details uploaded!

High Points:

- All BMW Premium Selection cars are less than five years old, and would have clocked under 1,20,000 kms.

- Used BMWs sold through this channel would come with up to 24 months / 200,000 kms warranty (whichever is earlier).

- If the car had an ongoing BSI package, it shall be carried forward to the new owner. However, BSI cannot be purchased at an added cost on a used BMW.

- All cars will go through a comprehensive 360 degree check and are completely refurbished (technically and visually). Only cars with minimal structural damage / accidents will be considered for evaluation under BMW Premium Selection.

- Finance options are also available from BMW, with an introductory intrest rate on 13% for the premium selection.

- Owners will have an option of taking 24/7/365 BMW roadside assistance as well.

- www.bmw.in/premiumselection : This webpage will list all the used BMWs that are being offered, across India. It will offer information on the technicalities, maintenance history and actual pictures of the Premium Selection Vehicles.

Though a bit late, it is a good move by BMW to enter into the use car market.
I wasn't aware of MBIL and Audi having a presence in the used car market.
By BMW service packages, are they BMW secure or different ?
In other cities they should do well, not so sure in bangalore. Whenever i've inquired for used-car prices they're very expensive and it makes more sense to save up a little more and go for a brand new one, road tax ofcourse is to blame for this.

The Pune dealer - Bavaria Motors has had it's pre-owned dealership open for at least 2 months! Not been inside but passed it many times and the site has been open to customers.
Mercedes has had it's pre-owned division for over one year. Cars are even mentioned on the Mercedes website.
Even I wasn't aware that Audi has started a pre-owned division? That is news to me.

Preowned car business in India is a huge market but requires a game changer like BMW to set things right. I don't have much hope in this happening even BMW has a proven record of being the game changer. Simply put the approach needs to change greatly.

At a used car dealership the buyer is constantly feeling ripped off and skeptical of his/her purchase(service history does solve this to some extent) and the seller never feels he got a good resale. Both these issues need to be addressed which can only happen when the agent or in this case BMW pre-owned division works on slim margins.

@shashank: the BMW service pack is nt Secure. It is a maintainence pack that is paid in advance and cover all consumables and parts.

Sahil, the only way we can expect a game changing strategy is by a company that wants to grow exponentially and leave the competition in dust. Indian market is economy of numbers and prestige, if more BMWs are seen, people will have great trust on the brand. Few friends bought Audi SUVs only because they didn't see more BMWs and Mercs SUVs. This is a great opportunity for BMW to gain quantum faith in its brand in India.

re: BMW India launches pre-owned car division. Full details uploaded!

This is good news! Giving full service history will go a long way towards peace of mind to prospective buyers. Also good warranty & service packages will make buyers feel some comfort towards servicing costs which are a big uncertainty with pre-owned cars.

One concern that anyone serious in making a splash in the used car business should address is financing cost.
AFAIK, the costs for financing pre-owned cars was ~twice as much as for new cars. A lot of people interested in pre-owned cars get put off just by that.

When someone has a budget of Rs 12 lakhs, usually people go in for some kind of financing. If they could extend their budget by a few lakhs to get a pre-owned luxury car, they would, but the HUGE cost of financing will be a turn off.

As for folks who have that kind of ready cash to plonk down, a little bit of financing and they could buy a new BMW/Merc/Audi which has tremendous snob value over and above any used car from the same brands.

The press release mentions Financing Ease. I hope that translates to lesser cost of finance too.

@ Gomzi

That's a valid point, however if BMW does something about the financing and reduces the differential vis-a-vis normally prevailing rates or offers attractive schemes, that problem should be solved.

Pretty sure, thet have thought of something or that aspect is in the works!

BMW runs its own finance desk called BMW finance. I remember them having a tie up with one of the Indian banks when the initially started. But looks like the high borrowing costs in India had given them something to think about. It makes sense for them, given the low return on the Euro.

LandCruiser,

A family friend whose car we recently sold for a 520d, got us a price of 19.80, it was a 320d HighLine facelift. Done 22k, and was GJ-1 registered under a single owner.

Some more prices for your refrence,

520d (E60) 18.75
530d (E60) 23.50
520d (F10) 31.00
530d (F10) 38 - 40 max, my car offer was 40.

Loads of previous gen 7 series range from 30 - 50.

Currently there is a 750Li, new model for about 65 or so.

Please note the above are for the Gujarat region only, so prices may vary, also BMW will pull this off very well but the only draw back is they only buyback your car if you intend to buy a car from them, or else the offers from them a much better then what local vendors quote.

Regards,

This is a great initiative by them. Will they be offering the service packs just like the BSI on a new car or is it something different? Also I guess the cost of the BSI would be considerably higher right since a used car will end up getting a lot more parts replaced etc.
Until the servicing costs are brought down or lucrative packs like BSI are offered, I am not sure how many customers will go through this route.

Good to see BMW India, as usual doing things the right way, and besides the right way also allowing a wonderful access in terms of being able to search the inventory, other manufacturers have tried this but over time left the pages to die out, (mercedes india back in 2003 etc. Had this)

Also what's amazing is the new finance packages being laid out to make the purchase even easier and more value for the end user.

Like I said the only gripe is they only buy your car provided you buy another upgrade from them.

Had a quick glance at their inventory. The prices seem to be slightly higher for the models listed then what one could get at second hand dealers / online car portals.

But then again, having thoroughly inspected by BMW is the price one pays I guess.
