I think if you weigh the hatch and the boot section separately, you will find that the hatch weighs roughly much as the boot. This is because the crash safety in the hatch is tougher to engineer.

This point came across during the NFF discussion on this forum, where Ford finds it more expensive to build the hatch than the sedan !!

Re: SCOOP Pic: Toyota Etios Diesel ; Coming in September'11

Interesting to see the pricing of the Etios/Liva Diesels.

Toyota plans price Increase.

Despite the festive season approaching fast, Toyota plans a hike in the prices by 1.5% – 2% . Like all other major car manufacturing companies, Toyota also states rise in the prices of raw materials as the main reason behind the hike.
All the raw materials like the metal costs, energy costs, rubber, plastics, fuels and what not ! Everything had becomes more expensive and so has the cars and SUV’s . Expected rise in the price will be by about 1.5 %. The estimated price of Toyota Corolla Altis will go up by up to Rs. 14,000 and for Toyota Innova - up by Rs. 17,000 and Fortuner byRs. 29,000. This price hike is expected to hit the market by Oct 1st’ 2011.

Here are the links to OD flash drive reports on the two cars:

Etios : Overdrive

Live : Overdrive

Quote:
Summary points:

- The diesel mill starts with a fair amount of clatter the first time.

- The gear shift was snappy with the short throw, however the gearbox is not slick like petrol model.

- There wasn’t too much of turbo lag and overtaking was quite easy. The cars aren’t much of a speed demon but more than happy pottering around at slower speeds, but, the cars have to be manhandled to things really moving.

- There’s also significant body roll when hustled through the corners (more than the petrol versions). Ride quality though is still as comfy as the petrol.

Crux : Space, comfort and driveability were the company’s primary targets with the diesel Etios/ Liva

I think car brand perceptions in India are still not as strong as US and Europe. In India Maruti and Hyundai compete with Honda, Toyota, VW despite similar pricing. In the developed world, Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia etc sell way cheaper than Toyota, Honda, VW of similar spec.

It is the reduced brand conciousness which allows people in India to chose Hyndais and Suzukis over other brands at same price.

Germans manufacturers manage to sell inferior (or rather dated) models here because they know they can not charge the same price here as they command in the west. Hence due to the fact that Indians are still not as brand conscious, they have to cut corners and keep the prices low.

Nothing good or bad about that though, we get what we demand!

Re: SCOOP Pic: Toyota Etios Diesel ; Coming in September'11

New swift interiors is far ahead of liva and etios . Swift interiotrs have premium feel to it and swift has more features then liva . But there is price difference between liva and swift so its your take to go for which one .

Under full load condition, Liva characteristics moves closer to Figo and farther away from Swift. But, still Liva seems to be a much better performer than Figo by a long margin. Regardless, Swift DDiS engine still rocks. Had Maruti added more than 20 mm increased space in the new Swift, no one would have even thought of Liva. If I prefer Liva over Swift, there are only 2 reasons for that - Space and Glass Area. I'm still confused as to why Maruti allocated just 20mm out of the 90 mm increase in length of the new Swift for cabin space!

Re: SCOOP Pic: Toyota Etios Diesel ; Coming in September'11

Hormazd's tweet on pricing.
Quote:
Toyota Launches Etios Diesel in four different variants - GD, GD (SP), VD & VXD grades range from Rs. 6.44 - Rs 7.87 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi
Edit 1:: Maruti Dzire price starts [LDi] @ 5,85,721/- ex showroom, Delhi. A bit too optimistic pricing for the Etios D??

Edit 2::
Quote:
Etios Liva diesel Rs 5.54 lakh onwards. SVP
Tweet by Siddharth from ACI.

Swift LDi starts @ 5,17,162/- ex showroom, Delhi.
