I happened to see a google street-view car on my way to a friends house near Ameerpet in Hyderabad. Has anyone else seen street-view cars in you town or city?

Yes, I saw one passing thru' the narrow lanes of BTM Stage 1, Bangalore.

The setup is like this : Generally a tall MUV/SUV is used. The one I saw was a Scorpio. On the roof, there are 2 parallel and perpendicular rails on which quite a complex camera equipment is mounted.

The camera setup consists of 2 cameras facing opposite ends (the sides facing the side of the car). There are tons of wires coming from the equipment and are hooked to a couple of laptops placed on the rear seats.

The car has Google written on one side and some other name on the other (guess the vendor). I don't know why but the car stopped in the middle of the lane; the co-pilot checked some papers he was holding and then they proceeded.

I was busy with my coffee when this happened and by the time I went in to get the cam and come out, they were gone.

One thing : All the complaints about privacy violation etc., trust me, they are valid! The camera had an immensely close view of the houses.

Yes, the streetview cars takes the pictures of the streets, which is then processed and put in the google map street view service.

Yes, I have seen the Google Streetview Car roaming in my colony about 3 weeks ago.

It was a MH registered Scorpio with a Tub like storage space built on top with a pole jutting out of it. The pole had about 6 cameras connected to it. For 360 degrees panaromic view of the location

I saw it once in the morning and we drove off just thinking, what is this whole thing. While returning home, I again saw it and that was when I remembered reading once on Team-BHP about the Google Streetview Scorpio's roaming the streets of Mumbai sometime ago. I had a word with the driver of the Scorpio to be confirmed about the Google Streetview thing. They have covered 40% of hyderabad till now and have time till year end to complete the whole of Hyderabad.

I tried using the pegman feature on Google Pune map to see streetview. Does not work yet. So the service has not started here.

I wish it starts soon. Hope it does not tangled in some government regulations.

Sorry but I was driving at the time so I could not take a pic.

It was a white Scorpio. The set up was very obvious that it was a streetview car. Cameras on all four sides with a dome in the middle.

It was spotted on main road Ameerpet roughly around 3:00PM just before peak rush hour.

You missed out on an great opportunity there. If you were standing on the street, then you would have been immortal (i think i am getting ahead of sanity) in virtual world!

Since you missed the opportunity, you cna be content with the fact that as a policy they smudge peoples faces and vehicle plates.

Spotted one in Mumbai on Dharavi-Sion Road while passing that area last Sunday. It was parked in a very crowded market place and I kept wondering what is that equipment on the top of the Scorpio. Thanks to this thread I now know what it was.
