Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

Hello everyone,

So basically I booked the new Creta in January end. The SA gave me a good quote on the insurance and I was happy with it.

Now the car has arrived, I did a PDI too. Then the SA calls me and tells me to get insurance from outside as it will be cheaper. I was a bit confused because usually it’s the other way around. He even recommended me the add ons and asked to get ICICI or HDFC.

Now what am confused about was why he is doing this. Today I asked him and he said that the rate was for previous month and now the dealer isn’t giving any discount. But no need to worry and getting insurance from outside is cheaper too.

What do you all think? Also any experience about Hyundai Assurance? I think if I book from outside I won’t get that most probably? Or should I stick to my original deal and ask the SA to honour it?

Do let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Sumeet

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

Two possibilities:

1. The SA is mighty pissed with the dealership for some reason and is already looking for a job change.
2. The SA has an under-the-table agreement with the outside agents!

I can't think of any other logical reasons for this.

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

Thanks for the reply. It seems the SA is still at the dealership. But I think second point might be likely.

The third point I think is the SA gave the quotation without confirming with his head and now can't provide it. So is asking me to go outside.

But will buying any outside insurance be a good thing? Specially if its cheaper by 10k+ I am worried about Hyundai Assurance to be honest.

If outside insurance is similarly priced, I will force him to honour the deal.

Hyundai dealers typically give you insurance via Hyundai Assure (backed by traditional insurance service providers). Since you mention he gave a good quote on the insurance, it's possible he gave one that he is unable to honor now and is finding a way to wiggle out of the hole he dug himself into. If you still prefer Hyundai Assure insurance, your dealership should be able to make it happen.

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

This is hilarious

A very weird situation considering the fact that today dealerships are willing to let go off the deal if you don't buy insurance from them. Looks like he gave you a quote which was either an internal number or the discount isn't available now. Just check with him what companies do they have a cashless tie up with. Save your money and move on.

For a brand new car I would prefer that the insurance be done only through the dealer. The seamless nature of claims/reimbursements, should anything unforeseen happen is always worth it.

We rarely meet the showroom based SA post the car sale. Our dealings are with again the SA but he is the Service Advisor.

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

So I spoke to him again. What he is telling me that as the invoice was generated last month in Feb, the insurance should have been done in that month itself. Now as March has started so it's hard for him to do it now.

It sounds a bit silly to be honest. I was never communicated this earlier either.

Now the thing is he is saying that outside insurance will also work as intended and only go for HDFC or ICICI. Rather he is telling me that he himself with get it done.

Very confusing haha. The entire experience was very seamless until this happened.

Please visit the showroom and talk to a higher up person. There is nothing like invoice and insurance being done on the same day. Insurance should be just before RTO registration date.

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

Yeah, I think you should just check both the prices, add ons therein, and decide which one YOU want. Just because he's asked you to procure it from outside doesn't mean you have to. I'm not sure that the bit about invoicing and insurance having to be done on the same day is true. Insurance requirement kicks in before the RTO process, and so that they can let you drive the car out of the showroom. It has no nexus to the invoicing date.

The only thing that one should get from the dealer is the vehicle. Everything else is an add-on on which the dealer makes a tidy profit/ SA gets a commission. You just need to put your foot down.

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

Lord praise the SA for his honest opinion, they are rare breed now.

In any case it was always beneficial to get the Insurance from outside as the dealer quotes are always way higher then the market prices. Unless the dealer matches the online market quotes doesn't make any sense to buy from the dealer. Again I don't think the SA is getting any commission from outside agent as it would be very unclear from where the OP is going to buy the Insurance. The only possibility is that the dealer has stopped entertaining any requests for Insurance discounts.

Best to buy Insurance from outside once it is known with whom does the Hyundai workshop has a cashless claim facility.

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

Hey, you are lucky that they allow you to take insurance from outside. I am insurance professional and can guarantee you that, there will not be any issue in buying insurance from outside. Just make sure that the insurance company from whom you are buying policy has cash-less arrangements with multiple dealers in your city. And at the time of claim, re-verify cashless arrangement with dealer before giving car.

I have done numerous insurance for new car and all are working fine in case of Accident. You will also save lot of money against the price of insurance in price-list. Cost difference (savings) is in the range of 35K to 50K for outside insurance, depends on model.

Here in Ahmedabad, dealer does not allow insurance from outside in case of creta, as it is under waiting.

Your SA has some integrity, which is typically lacking in his profession. Insurance companies always have a dynamic quote for their insurance products. Some months they may provide discounts to meet their targets. And some dealers will pass on this benefit, others will cash in on this. Their margins can be anywhere between 20-60% on the insurance that they sell plus the yearly commissions if renewed in the following years!

The chap you dealt with probably gave you a discounted quote after getting approval in Jan/Feb during your first interaction. Now since your delivery was much later, the insurance company probably pulled the discounts that they had earlier offered, so naturally, your premium will be higher than what was committed. Now, the poor chap probably felt bad that he couldn't provide you with the assured quote, so he has willingly asked you to procure the insurance product outside(albeit at a cheaper rate as you will be subject to lesser commissions). What I appreciate is him not forcing you to buy the insurance at the dealership anyway giving some idiotic excuse, which I'm sure other SAs would've done.

Now coming to this conundrum, you could ask the dealership to honour their committed quote, but if that was possible the SA would've done that anyway. Besides, the dealership will never match the outside quotes. You are somehow lucky to even get this option. A friend of mine was denied this when he booked his creta claiming it is a fast selling product and has a long waitlist and he ended up paying 45% more than the quotation he received from outside. So I suggest you take a look at some of the online aggregators(policybazaar, insurancedekho, etc.) for the insurance and get a sense of the quotes. You could buy your insurance from them and submit a copy of the same to your dealer to complete the registration formalities. Or you could use these quotes and get in touch with an insurance agent or directly buy it from the insurance company. But whichever insurance company you go with, make sure they have cashless facility with any of the A.S.S in your city to have a seamless claim later if and when you need it.

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

Faced a similar ordeal with Hyundai in Kolkata. The SA is actually a TL and he didn’t bother to adjust insurance rates.
I happily got that from outside (I have a few reliable agents)

This was for a friend’s car. He even had a claim the same year, which was processed without any hassle

Re: Surprise! My SA is recommending me to buy Insurance from outside

Hey folks!

Thanks for all the replies. It seems getting it from outside is also perfectly fine. Hyundai assurance is a nice to have thing but not a deal breaker either.

So I think the SA is genuinely nice and wants me to have the best deal possible. I think because we go a long way back till last year March, when I booked the old gen creta and my friend also got his creta via him.

So I finally ended up getting this policy via him (as in he helped me get it and that too at a discount)
