Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

This is the first time I am renewing our Creta's insurance, I'm a bit confused here, need some advice.

Car: Creta 1.4 Turbo DCT SX(O) 2020

On 2nd December 2020, we got the car from Safdarjang Hyundai, Gurugram. Along with TATA AIG ZeroDep insurance from the dealer itself for around 43k (1 Year Zero Dep + 3 Years Third Party).

Interestingly/Oddly we only had 2 insurance claims in this insurance. I'm still not satisfied with what the dealer says, they explain that it's due to us buying the car through Army CSD and they can't offer unlimited claims.

Currently, I'm being quoted 14.7L IDV after 10% depreciation? I feel that's low for a car costing 20L on-road Delhi, is that because we got the car for less through CSD?

I contacted a family trusted insurance agent and the dealership both are offering me the same HDFC insurance for 30k

HDFC Insurance Covers :

Quote:

1. Key Replacement Cover. ( KP)
2. Loss of Personal belonging cover. ( BP)
3. Zero Dep Cover. (ZD)
4. Consumable Cover. (CM)
5. Engine Protection Cover. (EP)
6. Towing payable up to 1500/- Rs.
7. Unlimited number of claim in Zero Dep Product.
8. Depreciation coverage of Tyre and Battery in case of Accident.
9. Rodent cover in Comprehensive Policy.
10. Online payment facility
11. Instant online policy schedule cum certificate of insurance
12. In-built rodent cover

• Part categorization advantage

Assistance in hassle-free and cashless claim settlement at the dealerships. Please note that the admission and settlement of a claim are at the sole discretion of the Insurance Company.

Also, I looked up insurance available on Policy Bazar and found that I'm getting almost the same covers with a brand called Royal Sundaram (never heard of it) for ₹17k.

Quote:
Royal Sundaram

IDV - ₹14,72,488

Addons:

Zero Dep: ₹ 7,657
24x7 Roadside Assistance
Zero Depreciation
Engine Protection Cover
Invoice Price
Key & Lock Replacement
Tyre Protector included
Consumables free
Any BHPian using/using Royal Sundaram can guide me if they are hassle-free and don't have dingy clauses !!
Also, fellow creta owners can let me know what insurance they're using that I should consider.

Thanks in advance

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

Royal Sundaram is one of the most popular car insurance providers. While the Digit, Acko, etc are relatively new(er).

RS is good but service differs from person to person for any Insurance provider.

I renewed my Insurance with Maruti Suzuki's inhouse HDFC erge as for 1.5k lesser I did not want any headaches. Peace of mind is more important and I don't wanna spend more on my own health insurance with those claim worries!

As far as I am aware, most policies limit zero-dep claims to only 2 per year. You can make additional claims, but it will not be zero-dep.

Royal Sundaram is not an unknown brand (not in the car insurance space at least). It would actually come under the purview of "Known Brand but Expensive Insurance", unlike say a GoDigit or Acko.

I have RS insurance for my car - claimed insurance once long time back, it was hassle free and smooth.

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

First & foremost thing - Which ASC does your car visit quite often? If the ASC is often visited by a certain insurance company surveyor, that's the most preferred insurance you should opt for.

If you're visiting different ASC across the nation, then you should stick with an insurance company that has large presence & widely accepted someone like ICIC, Bajaj Allianz etc & also makes the claim process quite easier.

Since I don't own a car from Hyundai, I'm not sure whom to recommend. In my case, although approaching United India/ICICI/Bajaj Allianz directly can give me lesser premium, I've opted for Maruti Insurance, who in turn has tie up with some other insurance company (now ICICI earlier National Insurance), because no MASS can refuse to fix my car under insurance for genuine claims.

For me, 80% of the time I don't claim the car insurance, but for that remaining 20%, I need 100% assurance on the claim hence I don't mind the extra premium.

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

Royal Sundaram is a known player for long in this sector, on the contrary HDFC Ergo is 1 year younger than Royal Sundaram.

Dealers give this crap all the time but yes for a costly car like yours, get the peace of mind. Ensure all the coverage is same in both, exchange mutual quotes and get the premium down for whichever the dealer service center is comfortable with. Its strange your family member and dealer are offering for same price.

If required make an anonymous call to them or another Hyundai dealer.

Majority of insurance companies do offer upto 2 zero dep claims in a year but at a premium many cover unlimited, hence Army CSD as excuse is also BS.

And if you are concerned on IDV, make sure to include Return to Invoice option is available. I do agree for newer cars it should not go down much, but it can shoot up premium.

Read some reviews, Royal Sundaram seems to have a positive response from the customers. I'm surprised I never heard of them.

Currently, I reside in Chanakyapuri and the car visits Hyundai Safdarjung Service Station which is on Delhi Race Course road and will be visiting there for approx 2 Yrs.

I will ask my SA regarding this insurance policy, 12k difference isn't huge but there must be some catch hence the difference I'm assuming. If not then RS it is !!

Yup, ensuring that return to invoice is included.

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

I'd say:

Look carefully what cover you are buying, t&c etc.

If you have multiple vehicles certain component like personal insurance cover needs to be bought only once. Take benefit of that.

Take benefit of the competitive prices. Don't think too much about "brand", just beyond making sure that it's not too obscure or unheard of. Do look for settlement ratio.

Don't fall for "brand loyalty". Keep re-evaluating every year at the time of renewal. Feel free to switch if you get a more competitive deal.

You get to make insurer choice every year. It's not like you are committing for something long term. That should ease the thought process.

The 5 insurers listed below are the top insurance companies based on the number of claims settled. They are pricier than the rest, but IRDAI (insurance watchdog) data shows it is worth it (see the link below for more details)
  • Bajaj Allianz
  • HDFC Ergo
  • Oriental
  • Royal Sundaram
  • SBI General
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...ml#post5189927 (The 2020 thread: Your preferred car insurance company & why)

GoDigit, Acko have poor settlement ratios. With Acko worse that GoDigit. For every 100 claims filed, GoDigit pays 83 claims as opposed to 90 claims paid by the above listed 5 insurers. So, shop around within these 5 and pick whoever is the lowest.

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

I have Royal Sundaram for the past couple of years, my brother also has it. My brother's Celerio had some major claims we faced no hassles with respect to the claim process.

It is good, but it is also your luck whom you get to deal with.

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

I have had my next-gen Verna with Royal Sundaram for the past 3 years. 1st year I was with ICICI Lombard (as it came free from the dealer).

Positives with RS are,

- Their prices are competitive with other players in the market (especially when you look out for most of the add-ons. I had RTI, Zero-Dep, Engine Protection etc)

- They offer you an option to upscale your IDV (of course your premium will slightly higher) but it's always better to have a higher IDV with new cars. In my experience, other companies either didn't have an option to increase IDV or their revised IDV is not on par with what RS offers

- They offered RTI for the 4th year too.

- I had a hassle-free claim settlement (this could change between the surveyors and region)

Even my next insurance renewal is due I already had a view of the quote from ICICI and ACKO. They are either on part with RS or slightly more than RS. By the looks mostly I might be with RS this year too.

Hope this helps.

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

Royal Sundaram is what I’ve for my Hyundai as well. They are solid for mainly Hyundais cause they got a good rapport with the major ASC’s of Hyundais in every city. Since they only offer cashless claims just make sure to confirm with them if you preferred ASC is partnered up with them for the smooth cashless claim if any. Good luck choosing!

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

I drive Honda City purchased in 2016. Till date the car has been insured under the Honda Assure scheme which has tie ups with ICICI, Royal Sundaram and Iffco Tokio as far as I remember. For the first five years, the car was insured with ICICI Assure policy. I has one major accident and the claim process and settlement was done smoothly by them. I just had to submit the form and rest was taken care off.
After the 5 th year, bumper to bumper policy wasn't offered by ICICI and I had to shift to Royal Sundaram Assure policy. I believe they're the only ones to offer Nil Sep upto 10 years of ownership. At times I've felt paying a higher premium isn't required. My annual insurance bills have always been around 33k, with the last premium paid was around 28k (25% NCB). Many competitors are offering third party and comprehensive policies from 12k a year. I do have the same confusion. But till the tenth year, I would still be going with the Assure policy. As for now my I pay around 50k a year for vehicle maintenance alone (30 k for insurance, 10k for any time warranty and 20k routine work).

Re: Cheap Insurance vs Known Brand but Expensive Insurance

I have had good experience with Maruti Insurance as they usually take care of all the formalities irrespective of the end insurance company. Hence I can choose the end insurance company based on premium cost or any other factor. If Hyundai also has a similar insurance arm then you can try their services. I went for relatively less known company like Universal Sompo this time only because I would be dealing with Maruti Insurance. Fingers crossed.

Bajaj Allianz service has deteorated over the years. They almost made me cry just to get my NCB certificate for my previous car with no responses from either their customer service or escalations.

Can we combine personal + third party cover for multiple cars? Is it possible? Can you shed some more light here, It would be useful for me and possibly others.

It's about the personal accident cover. Citing a relevant article. Also if you are buying online, most insurers give this option. They need you to declare that you are covered if you don't opt for the said cover.
