Bought a used car; Digit refuses to transfer comprehensive insurance

Hi

Stuck in a silly and unique situation, need some guidance.

Background

I bought a CRV automatic from a known friend of the family, the car had valid comprehensive insurance from Go Digit for an IDV of 6.5 lacs with validity till 18th July 2020. Due to the lockdown, the transfer process got a bit delayed (transfer was done reflected on Vaahan, the physical RC was delayed).

I duly contacted Digit & asked them to transfer the insurance to my name - There was a 35% NCB, which I know I would have to pay, and I was ready for the same. The valid insurance and Transferred RC certificate was duly sent across via email after a telephonic conversation.

Now the game starts - I get a call from DIGIT, saying that they could only transfer the Third party portion of the insurance and not the comprehensive cover - Reason stated was "underwriter has not approved" . I asked them they could get the car inspected, I am not filing a claim just asking for it to be transferred, to which they again declined . This is not my first pre-owned car and previously, insurance companies like Tata-AIG, ICICI Lombard and HDFC Ergo have all transferred a valid running insurance if all docs have been in place, with the NCB rebate paid back.

My concern is also that a break in comprehensive cover (which this will be) will make it considerably harder for me to get another full insurance, it certainly will reduce my discounts and rebate.

Is anyone else facing this issue, suggestions will be welcome.

Not a DIGIT bashing thread, I genuinely need some help!

MODS - I could provide documentary details over private email if this needs to be verified by you guys.

Get a copy of old insurance, new RC and approach some other insurance company. They will issue you a policy valid from the date of application. What you lose is the pro-rated 3rd party that you could have saved by transferring it to your name and your renewals won't match with the date or registration.

I will get a 3rd party cover from any insurer , that not the entire point mate , this refusal to transfer a valid insurance is completely unjustified , this is not a claim that they can refuse , its a genuine legal transfer. If DIGIT has this policy it should be specified and we should be cautious and factor additional cost when we buy a car insured with them .

Also , apparently DIGIT in the system have updated that they 'Rejected " my ' Application " for comprehensive cover . This is throwing off others , The car is a 2007 model , very difficult to find another insurer who will give me comprehensive , since this is effectively a 'break " in insurance .

I will take them to task for this , they simply cannot impose their whims and label it as a underwriting decision , there is a ombudsman and IRDA which can be approached and will be done . I spoke to a couple of insurance guys and there response was that this is a unheard of practice , they might ask you to shell out more money for transfer but never have they seen it refused .

Thank you

I'm talking about first party insurance. I did the same for a car I bought used. Saved me a lot of hassle too.

Better to insist for the transfer of comprehensive cover as well, My claim with ICICI was declined which I maintain as a perfectly legitimate claim citing a break in the Comprehensive cover, even if the vehicle was inspected before the approval of the next Comprehensive policy after the Break.

Exactly. Avoid the online providers, Digit / Acko types. They've grown very picky on what they cover or don't cover these days. Take your car to any of the major insurers' offices, walk in and say its transferred to your name and you now want to insure with them as you don't like the previous insurer. Done.

Exactly right advice. You can just walk in to any insurance office and get all covers and policy starting from the current date. There is any way just another month for renewal.

You are not losing anything. I would like to suggest that, since the policy expires in july and currently active, your car doesn't need inspection as well. You can go to coverfox or policy Bazar to get policy from reputed company or government insurance policies.

If you want to bash digit for their cheating, then it is a different story

Specifically don’t do that. Your data gets sent to brokers for all insurers and 20 people will call you each time your car is due for renewal

I use this as opportunity to negotiate and get best IDV at lower premium.

Last time, I got a discount of around 1200 rs in the name of lockdown

This is exactly the point , I need them to transfer the comprehensive cover as well .

@Hserus - This is not a policy I bought , I NEVER trust these so called 100% online setups for critical stuff like insurance , and this current issue reiterates my belief that they have arbitrary policies that can catch you out .

I do need an inspection , It is a clear case of misrepresentation if I say that the car has valid comprehensive cover when I buy the new insurance , these guys have a backend system , and they will use that against you , god forbid if you have a major claim . Infact the car does not have any insurance as of now as DIGIT is 'Speaking with the underwriters " , so I'm in the middle of nowhere .

This seems most odd! I've never had a problem transferring insurance to or from me with any insurance provider. I was insured with Digit last year and unfortunately had a claim - they increased my premium by 25%! I didn't renew with them, naturally.

I think the easiest way out will be to get fresh comprehensive insurance from any other firm. My agent at New India has always been able to get comprehensive insurance for even older cars. Meanwhile, if you're inclined, take up the case with the ombudsman.

Re: Bought a used car; Digit refuses to transfer comprehensive insurance

Hi

I am facing a similar problem to transfer the Digit Insurance for a Grand Vitara 2.4L 2012 model that I purchased about three weeks ago, around 10th Nov 2021.

My RC was transferred in 10 days and within 14 days I contacted Digit with all documents, consent letter, the copy of the New RC Smart card in my name and requested them to transfer the Insurance which has still 7 months to expire in May 2022. First they kept asking me for additional documents like KYC of old and new user, I sent them Aadhaar and PAN of both.
Next I got the Self Inspection link, and I did that and I got a Confirmation in SMS and Email that Self Inspection was approved.
When nothing happened after that I called and I was told that the transfer has been rejected as I am the 4th owner. Is there any rule as to the number of previous owners can't be more than a number to get an insurance transferred ?

I asked them to transfer only the third party insurance and they decline to do even that. So in effect the 7 months of transfer is going to be a waste and I have to buy a new insurance.
It's just that I don't want these companies to scam us by not transferring the Insurance when I have given them all the documents in time and am willing to forego the No claim bonus. They will eat up the premium of the remaining 7 months if I take a fresh insurance.

I told them to give me a reason for rejection of the transfer and they are no willing to write that down in Email. They just write in an email, please take a fresh Policy as the old policy cannot be transferred.

In my 25 years of owning card have never ever made a claim and I don't have any trust in Insurance companies. For the last 2-3 years I have just been getting 3rd Party Insurance for my other cars. I think the premium I save is less than the amount I spend in maintenance anyways.

Any thoughts ?

Styler.
