Maharashtra: Higher insurance premiums if you flout traffic rules

With One state One Challan rolled out by the Traffic Police department in the first phase in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad commissionerates. Under the first phase, errant motorists will receive an e-challan if they’ve violated a traffic rule in any of the aforementioned cities across the state.

IMHO the move is a good one but considering the fact that most of the vehicles in the state (almost 60%) are plyed without the mandatory insurance will this move deter the traffic offenders

Bad traffic record will pinch motorists twice from next year as repeat offenders will not just have to pay fine but also shell out more in Insurance premiums

When contacted, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh said “Why should the vehicle premium be less for people violating the rules?”

Taking a leaf out of insurance practices in developed countries. It's only logical. Those who frequently break traffic rules are more susceptible to accidents. This move will also act as a deterrent.

I don't like his tone though. It's not upto the police to decide on insurance premiums. That's a call that the IRDA & insurance companies have to take.

Before increasing insurance premiums for traffic violations, which could be as harmless like wrong parking (every street in Mumbai is littered with no parking signs), the authorities should first insist that insurance companies pay up accidental and theft claims promptly. Currently insurance claims take forever and are a nightmare to navigate, which is why you usually see motorists trading blows when they're involved in an accident.

Agree to this. IMO the hike in Insurance premiums should be for those who have recd the e-challans and haven't paid it for long. These efforts are merely to discipline the errant motorists only.
