Chennai lady gives up corporate life to start a car workshop

Thanks to Samir for sending this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP page!

Generally, when you say car service centre - one doesn’t think of women, except maybe, in an administration or management role. It’s men in workshop overalls that come to mind. However, there is a lady in Chennai, who has broken the stereotype.

Affunissa Chaudhary runs Motorheads - a multi-brand car service outlet at Neelankarai on East Coast Road. Affunissa gave up a corporate career ten years ago. After spending a decade in the automobile industry, in 2020, she founded Motorheads. She has a hands-on approach to running the show.

Affunissa has had a love for cars for a long time. When she was growing up, she would spend time at workshops and learn about the working of a car. She finds it thrilling to solve complex problems on her own. Her workshop is getting publicity by word-of-mouth.

Motorheads employs school dropouts, who are then trained by senior technicians. The organisation also picks youngsters from under-privileged communities and trains them, making them financially independent.

The Covid-19 pandemic broke out just as Motorheads started. It forced the service outlet to shut down for three months. This has given the small team of technicians the opportunity to take up complex jobs as they have more time in hand. Motorheads is also offering a pick and drop service for multi-brand vehicles within a 10-km radius, due to the outbreak of the pandemic.

Affunissa also owns a small collection of two-wheelers which includes a Yamaha RX 135, a modified Honda Unicorn and a Rajdoot GTS 175, which was popularly called “Bobby”.

Re: Chennai lady gives up corporate life to start a car workshop

So happy to read this! Finally we have examples which break stereotypes that only men can work on machines. I remember reading about Mahindra employing women in one of their ASS for technical roles.

I would request Team BHP to interview this lady. It will be an inspiration for a lot of women who visit Team BHP or are members of this community.

Absolutely love this. Helping hands are better than praying lips any day.

One good turn deserves another. I hope whenever possible folks in Chennai drive their business to this lady's establishment.

Kudos to Ms. Chaudhary and the Motorheads team.

It is wonderful to see a startup which focuses on the service part of automobiles. That it comes from a lady is even more heartwarming. The facilities seem top notch too and it is fantastic to know that Motorheads is getting word of mouth publicity too. Going by the pictures, even high end cars can be seen and that’s a vote of confidence from the customers for sure.

Most striking part, that it employs school dropouts and people from under privileged background and employing them after proper training. It’s refreshing to see the vision that the lady has for the society and that she is giving back to it while living her love for the automobiles. More power to such entrepreneurship and kudos to the lady

Re: Chennai lady gives up corporate life to start a car workshop

I'm really happy about this development. Not only because it's a lady who took the initiative, but majorly because it's an enthusiast who is going to run this garage with the passion of a true petrolhead; not a run-off-the-mill businessman who opens the workshop only to make money. I really look forward to workshops, showrooms & any automobile related shops of this kind.

Wish them all the best.

Re: Chennai lady gives up corporate life to start a car workshop

So happy to see this post on Team BHP!

The place is amongst the top 0.1% of all car service centers. I used to be a happy customer of Motorheads since a few months after it started, until I moved out of Chennai.

They have an excellent team, very professionally managed. Well capable of servicing even the most high end vehicles.

Very prompt in responses, punctual in returning the vehicle, very thorough in inspecting the vehicle, and also transparent about the problems. Lot of attention to detail - they take their time to carefully diagnose tricky issues. Have also seen them take effort to ensure that unnecessary costs are avoided.

Overall had multiple excellent experiences for several cars - my Accord V6, my Vento & a friend's Civic.

Re: Chennai lady gives up corporate life to start a car workshop

It's great to read such news. While hard work will definitely help her and give her success, it would be good to see the manufacturers also recognizing these FNG workshops. My point is, if a car is serviced in places like this, car companies should recognize and acknowledge that the job has been done well. It should further not tamper with extended warranties on such cars. We see articles all over the forum where car manufacturers deny warranties as some portion of work has been done by an outside workshop. That shouldn't be the case if workshops like these gain good reputation. Good luck.

Re: Chennai lady gives up corporate life to start a car workshop

Kudos to her and her team. That's a really great achievement and takes a lot of grit to pull off something like this in a predominantly male-dominated sector.

Hope she gets more traction now that they have been put in our News section.

I wish more of these multi-car garages that are handled by knowledgeable and professional folks should come up.

Such a heart warming post. It is so nice to hear that the lady has pursued her love into a profession. What is even better is making school drop outs employable. More power to her and the team!!!
