Spinny vs CARS24: Selling my 2010 Hyundai Accent
I recently sold my Hyundai Accent (Nov-2010 manufactured, Jan-2011 registered). I was the 2nd owner. I purchased it in 2016 for 3.0 lakh. It had externally fitted CNG kit. I decided to sell it on either Spinny or CARS24 because I wanted it to be quick and hassle-free even though it might fetch a little less price. I'm making this post to outline my experience with both Spinny and CARS24, and compare their PROs and CONs that might help other readers.
Make & Model: Hyundai Accent
Varient: Executive 1.5L Petrol + CNG (externally Fitted)
Manufacture: Nov-2010 (Registered Jan-2011)
Owners: I was 2nd Owner
Odo: 62k when bought in 2016, 94k when sold in 2024
Reason for Selling: Upgraded to Maruti Fronx 1.0L Turbo MT
The car was in very good condition. Apart from a few dents on the body panels, the engine was in perfect condition, and I never had to spend on any repairs apart from regular service.
Experience with Spinny: 4/10
The nice thing about these platforms is you can input the details of your car on their platform and get a ballpark range of the price you're going to get. So I went ahead and did that, and received a range of INR 1,47,000 - 1,85,000. Pretty good, considering the Orange Book Value of the car was ~1,25,000.
Considering the fact that I bought this car for 3.0 lakh in 2016, it was long discontinued by the company, and it was near it's 15-year registration validity, this was a good price by any measure.
Happy with the price I was getting, the next obvious step was to book a free evaluation of the car. Their mechanic would inspect the car and then I would get the final offer from Spinny. I booked the slot for the next day.
The mechanic reached the premises on time. He was well-mannered and inspected the car professionally. Took about 40 minutes to inspect the car and a 5-minute test drive. Personally he told me he was happy to see such a well-maintained car and asked me why I was willing to sell such a car that can run another 1 lakh km with no fuss. Going by his words I was expecting a good offer from Spinny.
The next day I received the offer from Spinny. It was a joke:
Obviously it was a shocker. It was way below their original price range, and was a ridiculous offer by any standard. I decided not to even reply to their offer. The next day I received a call from a Spinny executive and he tried to tell me why 36,000 was a fair offer for my car. I told him not to waste my time with this ridiculous offer and that I was already talking to another prospective buyers (I wasn't). He told me he could try and get a better offer near to 80,000 by next day.
The next day I received a revised offer of 65,000.
The Spinny executive called again to see if I was willing to accept the revised offer. I told him not to even call me if his offer is not above 1 lakh. The executive was so rude, I didn't even want to talk to him. He kept interrupting me while I was trying to talk. It was like he wasn't willing to listen to me and just tried feeding me his irrational reasons why my car was a piece of garbage (on contrary to their mechanic who was very happy with the condition of the car). At one point I got so irritated, I just hung up on him.
Then I decided to try CARS24.
Experience with CARS24: 8/10
I went to CARS24 website and did the same thing - filled in the details of car and I received a ballpark range.
Now this was close to the real-world value of the car. I booked an appointment for inspection.
Again, their mechanic was very professional and well-mannered. Reached on time and took about 20 minutes to inspect teh car and took a short test drive. He too was very happy with the condition of the car.
The next day I received the first offer from CARS24: INR 76,000
This was still below my expectation but at least it was better than Spinny and there was still room for negotiation.
(At this point it is important to point out the difference in the business models of Spinny & CARS24. Spinny buys the car themselves and then sell it off to other prospective buyers / dealers. CARS 24 on the other hand is an aggregator platform for dealers; the car inspection report is uploaded to portal and dealers from entire state can bid on it. The highest bidder takes the car and CARS24 take a small cut from both sides.)
Then I received a call from CARS24 executive to see if I was happy with the offer. I said I was only willing to accept a price within the price range they offered me on the website. He said he could run one more auction. I said I was happy to let the auction run as long as possible but wouldn't compromise on price, and a relative of mine was willing to buy the car straight from me (there was no one). Unlike Spinny, the CARS24 executive was very well-behaved. He even acknowledged the good condition of my car unlike Spinny.
The next day, I received a revised offer of 1,20,000 out of which CARS24 would take a cut of 5782 and I would get 1,14,218.
At this point I was happy with the price and was willing to accept the offer.
However a dealer saw my classified ad on another website and got in touch with me. He agreed to buy my car for 1,23,000 and so I finalized the deal with him.
So in the end, neither Spinny nor CARS24 got my car. But overall it was a much much better experience with CARS24 than Spinny. However, a couple days later I received a call from Spinny enquiring if I had changed my mind and if I was willing to accept their offer. I told them I sold my car to a dealer for 1,23,000 and he went silent for a few seconds. Then he congratulated me on the sale and I said thank you. That was the last call from Spinny.
