RUMOUR:

Porsche has reacted quickly and Select Cars Pvt Ltd has been appointed as the new dealer in NCR, no news about Audi though.

Select Cars seems to be on a roll - Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Porsche, Honda, Isuzu and Morris Garages - multiple brands under the belt now.

Seems that Select cars have la creme de la creme under their belt. The only big boys missing are BMW/Merc. Let us hope they can deliver.

I've heard that the new dealer (Select Cars) will be in Delhi and not Gurgaon. They also have Deustche Motoren if I remember correctly.

They run Deutsche Motoren, a BMW dealership.

That's the thing in the dealership business - do a good job, build a reputation and other manufacturers come to you like bees to a hive. So many auto dealerships (Navnit, Auto Hangar, Shaman) started with a single brand and now have multiple good ones.

On the other hand, you have thieves like Zenica & Ashish Chordia who kill the goose that laid the golden eggs.

NO GTO, that is not always the case.

Bankruptcy can come any time.

I know some of the biggest dealers in India are in deep trouble financially. They may not be called "Scamsters" but the reason for the trouble is the same. Mismanagement of their business and finances. And many companies who have a great name in this business have taken loans and diverted them to other businesses, typically real estate.

I obviously cannot give further details of the "official rumours" I've heard.

Look at DSK Toyota, nothing wrong with their dealership business and they would have expanded further as well. But a wrong decision made in one field caused their entire business to collapse.

Frankly DSK Toyota is a wrong example here, since clearly DSK's main business interests lay in real estate and auto dealership would be a very small slice of his pie. But yes, your point is totally valid, despite genuine intentions (and not necessarily being scamsters) a lot of businesses fail only due to mismanagement and diversion of funds to other businesses.

^ Agreed with both you guys. And why just car dealerships - so many businesses fail for a multitude of reasons.

However, what you are saying isn't applicable to Zenica. Zenica defrauded HDFC by continuing to use floor-plan financing for cars that were already sold. That is outright fraud. Technically, it sold & pocketed money on cars belonging to HDFC without even telling HDFC about it.

You'll be surprised to know how many dealerships are doing that. Big and Small. Famous and unknown.

Zenica probably did it more than they should have and they ended up defaulting. I know a few instances where the dealership was tottering but was "too big to fall". A white knight stepped in with a ton of cash and ended up buying a stake in the almost bankrupt company.

Many dealerships in India have been stressed recently. Pressure from the manufacturers to open more and more showrooms and service centres, increasing rentals in big cities and generally increased competition.
