I hope operators clean up their act and no one has to change. Airtel has to be competive with rates, Vodafone with it's network and others need to stay competitive.
I might switch just because of 3G pricing and range. Currently an Airtel customer since 1998.
The best part is you can switch from Postpay to Prepay of another operator, eg your stuck on a postpay plan which charges you Re1/min for STD then you can move to prepay with the same number and 1p/sec STD of another operator. Operators would have many retention plans in place not to loose customers who are stuck on higher tariffs or higher rentals, as customers its an option to squeeze the best rates from them.
Personally, I think that the costs are already very low and will not be the prime driver for a switch. Quality of Service is going to the trump card.

In Mumbai Vodafone has Rocketing High GPRS Charges :deadhorse for postpaid at Rs 499 pm for 500 mb, Rs 599 1 GB & Rs 799 pm Unlimited. When you compare it with other operators its mere Rs 98 for 2GB per month.
Oh yes, I was referring to call charges. Data is another ball game altogether :)
I will definitely switch from Vodafone to Idea.
Vodafone customer service doles out third rate treatment to users on roaming from other circles. It is as if you are talking to an alltogether different operator. They will simply respond like a parrot 'Sorry sir please contact customer service in your circle, we can provide you the number if you desire and then they will chirp out a toll free number that you cannot reach as long as you are not in your own circle'.
The Idea guys do as much as they can if not everything. At the least they don't make you feel as if you are from another planet.
Let us have a separate poll on each operator to decide which are the best and worst operators.
I am sick with Vodafone. Most disgusting policies and customer service.
As far as i know, mobile portability option is possible only to other networks within the same state/circle
Correct me if wrong
Would have been helpful if it was applicable throughout the country as people who have to relocate are often forced to change phone numbers due to higher rates outside home circle
^^ Yes, its intra state portability only.
From what I have heard, inter state portability is 10X times more difficult to implement technically. It is definitely not on govt's radar.

Vodafone and Reliance also require you to recharge with 200 in 6 months.

Thats a TRAI rule so no customer escapes that.
Also how about porting to a 3G operator ? I mean I'm sure a hell lot of us have 3G phones and the real value deal would come only with 3G services. Voice is pass'e data will rule, with so many Android, iphone and symbian apps to play around with moving to a 3G operator makes sense a lot more. (i.e. if your operator doesnt support 3G). With operators investing so much money in 3G its more likely that they would dish out some sweet deals.
Just the other day I was using "Waze - Social GPS" from a 2G network and moved on to using it over a 3G network here in Blore. It sure makes things a lot faster, I mean one can actually feel it.
SIM cards are going to get into a lot more things than just mobile phones I can see a car having a 3G SIM card and the moment you have a break-down your manufacturer calls you instead of you calling the helpline, telling you that a temporary car is available till the time yours gets fixed.

Mobile Number Portability is a good thing.
Its will be easier for a switch if you have prepaid connection.
with post paid connection and deposits for IR and ISD the switch will be very difficult. Various companies have different different security deposits for International roaming and ISD.And in case of a switch ,I am not sure how they would deal with the deposit amount.I had to struggle with my deposit of 6k from airtel .
In fact I had to get BSNL IR in addition to Tata Indicom because I noticed that Tata indi does not offer sms service in some of the countries.
Wait and watch is the best for now.I do want the global roaming rates to come down which are any where from 40 rs/min from US to 250 rs /min from cairo when using a indian sim.

Vodafone is easily the best network here in pune easily better than idea before any one jumps in with a differnt opinion as I have used both. Have a brilliant corporate plan and so have absolutely no plans to change.
Vodafone has not got 3G spectrum in Karnataka circle...
so if want 3G i will have to shift.. most probably to airtel.
but when is it coming ?? it is coming from more than 1 year...
Please stick to the topic of MNP.
Check the other threads for 3G news and how good or bad an operator is with service/plans.

Thats right, Right now its only within a state and that is good enough for us for now.
