Can people suggest some thing that can be used with WDTV (i.e. either HDMI or TOSlink connectivity) and my LCD?
If you're not investing much right now a good 5.1 option is the Logitech Z-5500. I think you can get it for around 15k. You can also get Polk audio rm6750 for around 19k.

You might get better help if you specify your exact budget, and your usage, i.e. what kind of content you like to watch/listen to.

I think you should check out philips. Lots of good 5.1 options in your budget.

You can get details here. Or you could just go to Nehru place and hunt for it! Don't know if it's officially launched just yet, though.

Have a query on the WD Media Player.

Is it possible to view photo albums from the web which are stored on Picassa / flicker etc ??

Anyone else who has a WD TV shares the same opinion w.r.t. sound quality ?
One of my friends is looking to get a media player and asking on behalf of him.

I personally have a popcorn hour and the sound quality very good. The only reason I wanted to suggest WD TV to him is because Popcorn hour is a bit technical when it comes to patching etc..

When I mentioned poor sound, its got nothing to do with the WDTV player. The unit has no sound processor. Bad audio is a factor of poor TV speakers.

I have connected my WDTV via toslink optical cable to my A/V Receiver. The sound is just awesome.

Nishanthgandhi/Samurai,

Thanks for clarifying this.

About my 2nd query does your WD box let you pull photos from online portals like Flicker , Picassa etc ??

Also how is the Facebook support ? Does it use a fixed id, or can you log in using your own ID ?

Thanks
Fillmore

Re: Networked Media Players - Play External HDD Content on TV

Looking in on getting myself a media player.

What option do i have at present?
I own a SONY 40EX500
TATA SKY
PHILIPS Dvd player with USB support
Philips HT ( upgrading soon )

I am for sure going to get a portable hard disk to start with. So can anyone tell me whats the size i should look for and the company? Seagate/ Transend?
What is this shock resistant stuff all about?
Do i really need 1TB-2TB, aren't those really big and also need a external power supply?
Any idea on the pricing?

What I am looking for in a media player is
It should have HDMI output/ Which do u think is the best ouptput?
It should be able to play as many video formats as possible
It should be able to wirelessly connect to the wifi and play files from my laptop
youtube and... (iam tired of running around the house with my pendirve)
How well does a PS3 fair when it comes to movie storing and wireless netwroking
compared to these HD players?

You have a lot of options, tho I think your best bet is the one featured a few posts above, the WDTV Live Hub with inbuilt 1 TB hard drive. Why do you want to go for a separate hard drive? If that is essential for you then check out the WDTV Live Plus (without hard drive).

Other options are Xtreamer and the Playon HD.

1TB or 2TB these days is essential, remember, good quality blu ray rips are upwards of 20~30 GB per movie. You can also store your photos and home videos on this.

A PS3 is not really comparable to a media player for the number of formats it can handle as also the size of the hard drive.

I think Xtreamer Pro is your answer. Here is your link:-

Xtreamer.Net - Features

Cost is about 14k with antenna. You will need extra hard disks. You can mount 2xHDDs of 2GB each in its cabinet. It supports the maximum number of formats and ISO files too. You can check the link for more details. It has regular release of firmware updates too.

It has HDMI and wireless connectivity too.

Was planning on buying this, it does have everything going for it except that it lacks WiFi. BTW does it support external HDDs in NTFS format ??
