Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I got the Samsung A8+ in Gold for my wife. It is an excellent product. One point you can add a second SIM while retaining the SD card. The second input (same place as S8) can take both in separate holders. I am surprised to see it on 7.1 and not 8.0 of Android, which is what my S8 is now on.

The phone is slightly bigger and heavier than my S8. It does not include the Data Transfer App from Samsung. So in order to transfer data I had to install the App in my A8 Plus, then again put the nano-SIM into my old HTC, download the Samsung App and then do the transfer on wireless. Took all of 8 minutes or so. The phone is looking nifty.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I am looking for a new device as my father's Moto G2 has slowed down and not holding charge as much as it used to.

His usage is lots of calls, sms (occasionally), WhatsApp & Youtube (both quite a bit).

Priorities:

1. Call quality (Clarity and loudness)
2. Reliability (software and hardware)
3. Battery back-up
4. Display quality (least stressful on eyes)
5. Dual Sim, preferable

Budget - Max 15k.

Dilemma - As all Carriers are moving towards VoLTE, does it make sense to hold this purchase for a little longer and get a dual VoLTE phone.

Take a look at Xiaomi Mi A1 or the newly launched Redmi Note 5. Both have great hardware and long lasting battery life and they are comfortably in your budget. I can vouch for their build quality. We have three Redmi Note 3's and two Redmi Note 4's and they are value for money devices.

@Shadow; I would advise an htc except it leaves something to be desired in both sound volume and speaker reliability. All others are a given with this excellent Taiwan product. Also, their 'sense' is by far the best front end in Android.

My mom uses a Redmi 1s (yes, her first smartphone). I liked the early days MIUI but I find that the recent updates are getting a little aggressive with forcing bloatware and unnecessary prompts/settings down the users throat.

If I am finding it aggressive and intrusive, imagine the plight of my parents. Elders want simple devices that just work. Yes, I have given a thought to moving my parents to the Apple ecosystem but then that will be more work for me as I will need to handle 2 ecosystems in my house.

A good HTC under 15k, really? I thought they did not care for anything other than flagship segment.

The Mi A1 does not have MIUI. It has the pure Android directly from Google. This is in fact the only phone apart from Google Pixel that has pure stock Android OS. Needless to say the updates also come very quickly.

I would recommend Mi A1. It's on stock Android and you wouldn't face bloatware issues. It has very good reviews. Please do check it out.

p.s: I also had Moto G2 and I also experienced charge retention issue and the the phone did not even last 2.5 years before it went blank one day! My wife's G3 also has similar issue on holding the charge. I wouldn't recommend Moto phones to anyone going forward.

Hi All,

My Jun 2016 purchased Oneplus 3 has all of a sudden gone dead, and now while trying to restart is getting stuck at boot logo. Took it to Oneplus service centre, and they confirmed that I would need a motherboard replacement. The cost mentioned is approx 14k - 15k. Any suggestions on where to get it fixed ?

Anyone bought the Honor View 10? Impressive specs and many sites say better than the OnePlus 5T? Much better value too - better pricing.

Yo Naveeno, check Huawei's update track record. Wife has a OP3 and keeps getting updates. Already on Oreo with Dec patch.

I am trying to get hold of Mi A1 in Bangalore, but seems that its out of stock everywhere. Tried almost all online portals, and physical stores too. Any idea where to get this from?
