If your sound bar is connected using HDMI you should be able to power off/on using your TV remote. Which model are you using?

I have auditioned the Klipsh and Jamo speakers at Cinebels today - Loved the floor standing speakers S428 model after listening to that I went back to listen to YAS 107 and could no longer appreciate the sound from it.

Jamo S428 speakers (package 5.0) costs around 48 K and a basic Amp will cost around 30 K. If I can negotiate to just get the floor standing speakers alone I may be able to go for it.

I have also auditioned the JBL 350 soundbar and Thonet & Vander Kugel 2.0 (another store). JBL sounded a little too harsh (tweaking might help). Advantage with Thonet is they do not need an Amp and has Optical in which can connect to my TV directly, it has Bluetooth in built that's a plus. The price for Thonet was too high at store (33K) online price is 25K.

Though I loved Jamo I have never heard much about the brand - Klipsh was a little to bright to my liking. Jamo sounded perfect to my ears.

Overall an exhausting day - suggestions please.

Re: The Home Theater thread

My recent portable true home theater setup that has been built using the following equipments

1. ZTE Spro 200 lumen portable LED projector

2. OWLENZ 50" Tabletop projector screen

3. Amazon Echo (or) Echo Tap

4. Unknown mini tripod

Here is my simple yet very practical truly portable home theater. In this picture I was using my Amazon Echo as this picture is taken indoor, but for the true portability I use echo tab and both of these connected to the projector via Bluetooth.

Jamo is decent brand in budget speakers. If you liked the sound then go for them.

You can also look at Sonodyne, well reputed Indian brand in audio.

Other brands worth considering are Wharfedale, Boston acoustics, Q acoustics.
Pioneer and Polk audio also have budget speaker sets, both designed by Andrew Jones.

These are few brands which you can easily find at any reputed HT store in cities.

Re: The Home Theater thread

Any suggestions on stores in Pune where I can get a decent demo and some suggestions for building a budget 5.1 setup?

Croma/ Reliance, etc just have a couple of sets and the folks there do not seem so interested in even talking about it, forget selling.

Sound factor at camp, I recently got my Yamaha 107 soundbar from them. They have a couple of auditioning rooms which was very well equipped.

Re: The Home Theater thread

Hi all,

I have an old setup at home that needs some refresh. I have done my research and am zeroing in on an upgrade. Just wanted to bounce the idea around for some feedback.

Background:
I bought my first home theater setup about 17 years back, an all-in-one box Sony system that I used for 4 years. Then I moved into my own house with bigger rooms. The same system just did not sound half-decent in the new setup and I decided to upgrade to a better system. I switched to a Cambridge Audio Azur 541R AVR with Quad 11L bookshelves, with the source being a Sony DVD/CD player and an Onkyo twin tape deck. I still love this setup.

The idea was to slowly add speakers/subwoofers/source and grow the system. But somewhere along the way, I got fed up with this home-theater gimmickry and decided to stay with the stereo setup. However, the convenience of an AVR cannot be over emphasized.

Current situation:
Over the years, with the rise of streaming culture, I have invested in other streaming devices (media player, fire stick, echo dot, apple music, etc.) that speak languages (HDMI, Blutooth, Airplay, DLNA) that my HT setup (which is still at component, coaxial, optical interface) doesn't understand. Now, I want to upgrade to an AVR that can handle these requirements and still be musical. And I plan to stay with my cherished Quads and do not plan to add any more speakers.

I have been planning this upgrade for some time, but right now I am ready to bite the bullet. I don't want the tall, thick, ugly AVRs that most companies dish out these days. Also, I believe (from my own experience) that CA and Marantz perform better at music than the Denon/Onkyo/Yamahas of this work. But CA does not make slim receivers any more and Marantz slimline series seems to be only good option. So I am planning to upgrade to a Marantz NR1608 slimline receiver that is available now at about 65k. It seems to cover all my requirements.

What do you folks think about this path or do you have any alternate suggestions?

Thanks,
Prasad

Re: The Home Theater thread

If you dont mind the additional couple of inches height, the Marantz 5012 at approximately the same price is just too good to pass. I hope you are aware the slimline ones are also very low on power.

If you can afford the Jamo's , I would completely recommend them. Jamo is a Danish company which makes very good quality speakers. When I was auditioning, I like the Jamo's a lot. The other Option which I liked was the Canadian - Energy Speakers. I finally settled with the Energy speakers with an Onkyo receiver Amp which sounded best to me and the Energy speakers had Dipole rear surrounds which were amazing. I have been using them for 3 years now and am still a happy man ! My home theatre system sounds better than most Cinema theaters and I don't like the Cinema hall sound any more and enjoy watching movies only at home ! I have an Epson WXGA projector (forgot the Model number!) and a Motorized 9 ft diagonal screen.
I normally use Chrome cast for streaming movies from Google play movies and it works well.

Congrats!! I've seen that it received good reviews on what-hifi too. I'm also searching for a soundbar and narrowed down to this and the Q Acoustics M4.
Amazon reviews mention a problem with the sub-woofer crossover frequency of the YAS-207.
Did you also feel that? Is it that perceptible?

No, I can't add few inches. Also, Marantz (like CA) quotes realistic numbers for their power. I have heard their slimline receivers 2 years ago and 50 Watts is plenty loud.

Jamo speakers + AVR was going to close to 60K - not in a position to spend so much at this time. I have picked up Yamaha YHT-1840 for 29300 from a retailer. This sounds definitely better than the Soundbars I have auditioned from Yamaha, Klipsh, Jamo, etc.

This set came with 5.1 speaker setup and one advantage with this AVR is it supports both active and passive Sub. This came with a 6" Sub which I swapped with my car's Sub (12" Rockford fosgate P1 Punch series), bass is much deeper.
Yamaha sub is doing its duty in my Punto (Advantage: Boot space saved!)

I will live with this setup for now and upgrade the front speakers at a later time.

Thanks for your inputs!

Re: The Home Theater thread

There is not much options for slimline receivers. If you are not going to add speakers then a Marantz 1508 will do everything you need and can be bought for 45K. The 1608 has 2 more channels and Atmos which you don't need for a stereo setup anyways.

I use a CA 640R with a Dacmagic 100 DAC connected to my computer and love the setup. Matched with a B&W CM6 the sound is amazing.

Great to know someone else is also enjoying the CA range. They made great budget products that did not compromise sound. Pity that they moved up the value chain.

As you say, the only remaining option is Marantz. And I may have to buy it without audition. The only thing worrying me is that they have a slightly warmer sound compared to CA. So currently, I will keep my CA 540v3 also. Worst case, I can use Marantz as a processor & CA as amplifier.

There are 2 things in MZ 1608 that 1508 does not have: video processing & bi-amping capability. The first will simplify my wiring, the latter has a potential to give me better sound by using 4 amplifiers for 2 channels. That said I have an alternative to buy 1607 which is available cheaper than even 1508. The only thing I lose is HEOS as compared to 1608. Hey, but I am upgrading my receiver after 10 years. Let me splurge a little

Re: The Home Theater thread

Got myself a Bose sound touch 10,, over the Sonos one due to the various connectivity options and the echo Dot bundle offer. Feel the Sonos gives much better clarity though the Bose gives better bass.

Can someone recommend a sound bar or home theater system within 1 lac range. Any feed back on the Bose sound bar 300 with the sub woofer module and the Yamaha Atmos home theater system.
