Nokia offering maps and navigation for free

Nokia has announced free maps and turn by turn navigation for the OVI maps. See more about this here Free Navigation on your Nokia. Forever - Ovi Maps
I think this is a good step for all those who has Nokia phones that support Ovi maps.

Check if your phone is supported. Not all models are supported as of now.

Free Navigation on Nokia Smartphones!!

The big news on Thurday from Nokia, that it will provide " Navigation for free with your Nokia handset in 75 countries"
Navigate for free with your Nokia handset in 75 countries- Telecom-News By Industry-News-The Economic Times

This means dedicated GPS may not be required. A big relief for Cars. Only downslide is that mobile signal is required.
Have a Nokia smartphone? Then use it to navigate for free across all top cities in 74 plus countries. You will no longer have to pay

Palm Pre smartphone
Nokia E75
the exorbitant US$ 1.99 per day for using this service!

This is the ‘big news’ that Nokia said it would announce globally at 3 pm India time on Thursday! The announcement will be made in London and not Helsinki, the headquarters of the world’s largest handset maker.

The move is set to impact domestic firms that provide navigation devises across the globe as Nokia’s smartphone reach extends to almost all countries that offer a mobile service. For starters, this service will be available in 74 countries across 45 languages.

For users in India, the world’s fastest growing mobile market, the service is available in 84 of the country’s key cities including the four metros. Put simply, in these places, customers can use their Nokia handset to navigate as they drive or even walk. Importantly, Nokia has also mapped put over a million key installations, also called points of intent, that will further help you use this service.

Another key functionality of the product is the feature that allows the navigation software that resides on the handset to upgrade itself intelligently. This means, every time Nokia upgrades say the maps for Delhi and adds new points of intent in this city, only customers who use this service in Delhi will get the upgrade. The logic is that intelligent upgrades will take away very little space in your mobile.

Does this use GPRS or GPS?
Why is it available only on GPS enabled phones?

Praveen I have a E71. Did you test it with the new OVI maps 3.0. The website states that E71 is supported and we need to download and install the new map V 3.0. I tried to download the 19.3MB OVI maps 3.0 through GPRS (since I am still in office). All went fine till my friend called me when it was 16MB completed and the download stopped . I will test it tonight and hopefully by tomorrow I will update the thread for compatibility with E71.

Bad luck there, Hari. I am sure you will be able to download it one more time and install it successfully. Let me know the feedback once you are done with it.

offline Nokia Maps for symbian has been available for quite sometime. But i guess the navigation is free from now on. One word of caution, after the initial download of 16Mb, the install proceeds to download the complete map and it is about 104Mb in size. The best option would be to use the internet connection at home, else it will take a very long time.

@triedeverything, Nokia N97 is supported as per the website. You have to upgrade your maps software to Ovi Maps 3.0.
