You will get a lot of options in the 30k-35k.

1. Dell Vostro
2. Acer
3. HP nx series(if still available)

But again give first preference to Dell Vostro.
Dells are sturdy machines.

Need a mid budget portable for my dad.

Dell seems good even though Iv had a bad experience with the Inspiron 5100 series (very severe design flaw/manufacturing defect and absolutely no responsibility taken by dell).

I thought for the 30-35 range only HP pavilion would come fully loaded.

You would have got a recovery disk to help you re-install in case of a system crash . Any luck with this ?
I had spoken with Lenovo and further they gave me the contact details from where i can take the recovery cd and i was told that it would not tamper the warranty even if i downgrade to xp.

Also they told that total expense would be around 2k only since i need to pay only for the cds. This week i would be going lets see whether this works out

Just wondering how good are AMD laptops? Visited a HP showroom.
Found a really good config. Compaq CQ-50 with AMD QL-60(1.9Ghz), 1GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, nvidia 8200 mobo.
Price Rs 32500
Apart from 1GB DDR2 tahts lacking, the mobo is great i think. How good is the processor?

Used AMD extensively in college.
Great VFM and good performers too.

Low on battery life but will last you long enough.
I wont rank AMD less on any scale vis a vis Intel

Guys, need some help here. I'm planning to buy a laptop in the 30-35K range. My main needs are for collegework, net usage, gaming and good battery life. What would you suggest? I was tempted by the dell Inspiron 1525, Especially in some bling colours!. What are the other options guys??

The battery life would be in the range of 2-3 hrs on any 6 cell laptop unless you go for one with Intel Atom processor.

I havent seen or used one till date. Suggest you to see reviews on Mouthshut.com.

EDIT: Found this with some googling
PC World - Aspire One Review

Hope it may help

Intel Atom is for Ultraportables like EeePC, not for regular laptops.

At the same time I believe The Atom can deliver all that .
Read somewhere in the papers that with 6 cell battery it can stretch upto 4-5 hours

JayD - Make sure you get the max possible RAM, HDD & Graphics Card (V.I.) in the said config. Otherwise you might be able to play the games well for a while but it can become obsolete very soon.

Acer pebbles are more VFM. Check them out, and compare it with Dell 1525 and then make a decision.

Dell would be VFM if you get it through EPP - In that case dont even look at other laptops.

And...Centrino 2 is on its way, wait if you can.

Inspiron 1525 does not come with separate graphic card and shares upto 358MB memory out of the 2GB im my system.

See the following:
