In fairness, the point of a high spec'd work laptop isn't to handle multimedia well (unless you work in a creative industry). Your work IT give a fig about how the speakers sound for anything other than calls. So you'd forgive lines like the Thinkpad or Latitude (or whatever it's called now) being middling at display quality and sound despite their high price and specification - they're enterprise machines for a reason.

Just wanted to strongly second this advice! Talking to those a few years ahead of the pipeline is the best bet. No point repeating their mistakes.

If you can get by using MacOS, think the suggestion of the newest Mac Mini is a good shout - it's tremendously capable for a surprisingly reasonable (for Apple) price. If you're not that concerned about portability, it gives a lot more headroom for intensive tasks. Also if you're happy to lug a wireless keyboard and mouse around, the Mac Mini is kinda portable if you can just plug into any old screen. Shame that there's no real competitor product in the Windows space, at least not one that doesn't involve one having to basically build themselves from bespoke minimised components.

Speaking of components, if you're the tinkering kind, you could always look at the Framework laptop. They've been true to their word for a number of years now and there's quite an extensive little ecosystem built around the many components and modules available for it. You'd in principle be able to infinitely upgrade it over time. I for one am curious if we'll see a Qualcomm based motherboard from them - that would address the battery life issues from the earlier Framework configs.

Both are good.

AMD one has a slight edge. Similar performance and lower power consumption.

If some store has it for demo, carry raw footage and check display in store. Display is known to have colour tints that can cause problems for image / video edits, specially colour grading. Can be fixed by external monitor though.

There are quite a few online listings who come home and pick it up and deliver back. As competitive as SP Road. Depends on brand and your locations. Dell, HP and Lenovo are the easy ones. Where are you based?

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

What would be a good laptop in the sub 30k range?

The use case will be primarily for word processing, email and WhatsApp web. Prefer a 14" screen with good battery back and easy serviceability.

My Sony VAIO and Toshiba satellite models served me faithfully for 15 and 12 years respectively and are nearing the end of their useful life. Ergo, I am keen on picking up a reliable long termer. But since I have desktops available at my workplace for more complex tasks, a simple and portable piece would serve me well.

PS: Any first hand experience and suggestions for good laptop repair/restoration centres in Mysore? Thinking of one last resuscitation attempt for my old war horses.

Personal suggestion,

Consider second hand / pre-owned ThinkPads

You can consider refurbished section of Amazon and go with products having return policy. For model section, personally I would do following with 30k budget,

* Try to find a deal within 22-25k
* Avoid touch screens
* Buy lower RAM and upgrade locally
* i5 or above

ThinkPads have really good serviceability and spare parts availability. Although some of the spares are tad bit costly. But there are cheaper 3rd party alternatives too for those regular spares like Battery and Charger or SSD and RAM

Heat Management of 30k range "new" laptops are really poor and not at all suitable for Indian summers. Most of the time they are thermal throttled and ends up preforming poor than an older generation, second hand, high end product like ThinkPads

Here are a few laptops worth considering around the 30k mark:

This is an HP 255 G9 15.6-inch laptop with a good processor and features for the price, it was available at Rs.29,999 just up until recently
https://www.flipkart.com/hp-255-g9-s...dCZTuK001hzVwO

A similar model with newer generation Ryzen and good reviews (albeit only a handful)
https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0DS8Y725N/...dCZZbr0016CI3I

Similar to the above two but 14 inches as per your requirement, reviews aren't great though
https://www.amazon.in/dp/B08739J3XP/...ustomerReviews

It is another 14-inch alternative but with better reviews than the earlier one
https://www.flipkart.com/hp-245-g9-s...dCZmqt001KIhOr

This is an Acer model, worth considering at this price point
https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0DG2GCTD7/...X001rC0e4&th=1

If you are alright with refurbished, here are a few options as well:

This one has a touchscreen, which is ideally best avoided, but the specs and the model are good
https://www.amazon.in/Refurbished-De...ustomerReviews

This is a newer non-touchscreen version and a solid choice
https://www.amazon.in/Refurbished-De...mputers&sr=1-6

An HP Elitebook worth considering
https://www.amazon.in/Refurbished-HP...puters&sr=1-22

Another Dell with an HDD+SDD combination in case you need more space
https://www.amazon.in/Refurbished-De...puters&sr=1-23

Another Dell but with a 8th gen i7 and 16 GB RAM
https://www.amazon.in/Renewed-Dell-L...ustomerReviews

A 10th gen 14 inch ThinkPad, a solid choice in the refurbished section

Alternative ideas:

1) Buy a desktop for home too. It will last forever because components can be repaired/replaced anytime. If you want portable computer at home, you can always use the smartphone!

2) If you need a portable computer while travelling too, then yes, you definitely need a laptop. Consider the 13th gen core i3 1315U chromebook for Rs. 23,000. You can read my review of chrome OS/chromebook here: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/gadge...ml#post5907685 (The Chromebook / Chrome OS Thread)

I would request experts' views on One Plus Pad2, is it worth buying with a keyboard? Can it be considered an alternative to a decent laptop?

Depends on what you want to do with it/what are your requirements.

Tablets are just bigger smartphones. Laptop offers much more options. You can connect almost all peripherals available on market from get go. You don't have to be dependent on app store for softwares and windows have way too many softwares than android can offer. Repair-ability is a concern too with tablets.

For the price of OP Pad2 you can get a decent laptop.

If you want ultimate portability and you can compromise on some features the go ahead with oneplus pad2.

My wife using one plus pad 1 with one plus magnetic keyboard. It comes with good specs, a very good screen, and does most of the things. She use it for browsing watching OTTs, and edit her presentation. But it never replaces a good laptop.Everything is meant for one purpose; it can't replace the other's purpose.

As stated by others on the forum, a tablet is a large smartphone, it can do everything that a smartphone can, but a laptop gives you much more, the portability and versatility are what make a tablet a great device. However performance and the software experience of laptops are unmatched, moreover, the keyboard comfort of laptops is much better as well.

So to conclude, If you mainly browse the web, check emails, stream videos, or use social media, a tablet with a keyboard could be more than sufficient. However, for Work and Heavier usage involving running intensive applications, multitasking efficiently, or requiring a comfortable typing experience for long hours, a laptop is likely the better choice.

Now coming to the OnePlus Pad 2, it costs around 37k to 40k depending on the configuration, for that price you could easily get a mid-range laptop if your use case requires it, but as far as Tablets go in this price range, the OnePlus Pad 2 is one of the best, besides the iPads.

Here are a few options starting from 55k all the way till 90k

1. Acer Swift X
At 55k, this laptop is a good buy albeit a bit old, but with 4GB NVIDIA RTX 3050, it gives no reason to complain, it has an international warranty, weighs just 1.39 kg has 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, comes with a sleek design, it, however, comes with Windows 10 but with a free upgrade option, there is a Windows 11 version available but it costs close to 70k, so this is a way better deal.

https://www.flipkart.com/acer-amd-ry...eY4Jry001eqvx2

2. MSI Cyborg 14 i5, RTX 3050
At 62k, this is a gaming laptop with 6GB RTX 3050 Graphics,
https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0D6MXQ2DK/...eY5aoE0018ustw

3. Asus VivoBook Pro 14 OLED
An 83k Laptop for creators with a stunning OLED display, NVIDIA RTX 3050 and a lot more.

https://www.flipkart.com/asus-vivobo...eY6J49001F1Ijs

4. MSI Cyborg 14 i7, RTX 4050
Priced at 90k, This takes gaming to a whole new level

https://www.flipkart.com/msi-cyborg-...eY6nLr001oBump

Ideally, the Acer Swift X would be the perfect blend of speed, power, performance, portability and style without looking like a gaming laptop and being relatively affordable at the same time. If you need any further specific details or recommendations, feel free to DM me.
