Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x with ARM based Snapdragon processor is available in India now. Of all the Elite X laptops, this is the one I was most excited about. After seeing the Microsoft surface with inferior specs priced at 1.8L on Croma, I wasn't too hopeful, but I am pleasantly surprised.
With 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage it is priced at 1.5L. This does look like a great deal compared to Macbook Air.

https://www.lenovo.com/in/en/p/lapto...01y0049#models

Seeing the reviews the only downside I could see was apps not being optimized or ported to arm. But if your workload includes only MS Office and web browsing you should be fine. Even Visual Studio is available on arm and I think slack is too. So all in all for most people out there it should not be a problem.

Eagerly waiting for cheaper laptops using this processor.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Hello everyone,

I'm currently looking for a gaming laptop with a budget of 60-65K and have shortlisted the two models.

1. Acer ALG i7-13620H, RTX 3050 with 6GB VRAM (61k with SBI card discounts)
https://amzn.in/d/dtfPwXj

2. HP Victus i5-13420H, RTX 4050 with 6GB VRAM (61k with SBI card discounts)
https://amzn.in/d/5KHLLk4

Both of the above models have similar RAM and storage.

Now, I understand that Acer has more advantages over HP in most aspects and is comparable in price. Still, my father has asked me to proceed with HP because of its reliability, customer support, and service. Now I'm confused as to whether to choose HP or Acer.

So I would like to hear about both laptops from those who have experience with either brand.

Also, new suggestions are welcome.

I have owned 2 generations of HP Omen laptops (first gen from 2014 - 2020) and next one from 2020 - till date. I can assure you of the lower temperatures, good GPU performance (mine is a GTX 1660Ti model with full HD 144hz screen) and great typing experience. I have to only open the laptop once every 6 months or so to clean the fans and that's it. The thermals still hold up and the laptop seems to be built to last. I would recommend HP over Acer basis my experience of over a decade with it & additionally you will get better RTX performance on 4050 vs. 3050.

Advantage HP- Omen is a reputed product line, RTX 4050> RTX 3050(better for gaming), better after sales service.

Advantage Acer- Better processor.

I'd go with the HP unless you're a processor heavy user.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

So I managed to bag a Lenovo E14 (5th Gen, AMD based) for 30k after exchange, card discounts. Had purchased the same system in the month of June for 50k, and luckily the sale was only for a day, now there is 1 problem, the display has a bubble and the tech support is asking for 1-2 weeks for a replacement without even providing a loaner system. Have already escalated it, is there anything else I can do to make them understand a new laptop has manufacturing defect?

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

I got the kiddo the Acer 16 Predator Neo 14Gi7 16GB6X 512SSD. Got it for 1.26L from Croma.

Looking at the specs, the Acer was quite superior in almost everything than the Victus. Similar configuration of Omen was quite around 20k or more.

Do take a look at this. It is quite a sturdy laptop.

I have a feeling that because it had display problem the price is so low. Luckily Lenovo is willing to replace the display. Most probably they knew of this problem in the piece but chose to sell it at a deep discount and then repair it. Other wise it would be labeled "refurbished piece".

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Question for folks regarding the windows 10 phase out - is my laptop going to be a major security vulnerability after October 2025?

The reason I ask is that I have a perfectly functioning Lenovo yoga bought in 2017 which I probably use for 20 minutes a day. With a new battery I replaced last year, it is chugging along perfectly with no hiccups.

If possible, I'd like to retain this laptop and have windows as I don't have much utility for a new machine. Or should I cash on some good deals during Thanksgiving?

No no, its a small bubble which spoils aesthetics. So far they are just pushing it here and there, a local service provider called & said they will come, seal the laptop & give a DOA certificate which I have to contact Amazon for a replacement (Too much fuss)

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Needed some quick guidance. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen2 Laptop that has stopped charging, for whatever reason. Seems a charging port issue on the Laptop. Talking to Lenovo Customer Care, their solution is to replace the Motherboard as Charging Port is embedded on the MB. Change the whole Motherboard for a charging port issue? Seriously...Lenovo. . I plan to take it to Lenovo Service Center in some time, but needed some suggestions here from Lenovo users if only the charging port can be replaced or fixed?

My sister had a Lenovo (Don't remember the model number) but it was an i3, the charging socket had become wobbly, even tried replacing the charger however fault was detected in the motherboard by a local technician (since it was out of warranty), only way to resolve it was to replace the motherboard as the charging module was embedded? in the motherboard unlike Dell/HP where a part could be replaced, eventually exchanged the laptop via Amazon for an E14 Thinkpad. So yes, the whole motherboard will have to be changed, and it can be an expensive affair.

Well, that's a bummer, if true. I'll take it to a local Laptop Repair Shop to diagnose and hope for the best. Thanks for your quick response.

It'll take an extremely skilled technician to do it without replacing the motherboard.

I used to swear by lenovo earlier. I still have a 8yr old ThinkPad in use, I am typing on it right now. But off late the new gen Lenovo's are not reliable. I have had issue with touch pad on one laptop, camera in another and similar charging port issue. I'll stay away for my future purchases.

Ever since I bought my first laptop in 2002 an X40 it was always a ThinkPad. First two were IBM and the later ones Lenovo branded. But the quality remained same.

There is a vast quality difference between the "ThinkPad" and other models. Even then there are times when gadgets fail. I also have E14 with AMD 5000 series, 24GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. It is still going strong after more than two years.

As every gadget with electronics fails, some times early and at times after a long time, I make it a point to take extended warranty for 5 years if feasible.

The reason for taking extended warranty is that slowly the motherboards are getting more complicated and to reduce costs lot more functions are integrated into custom IC's and practically every thing is soldered on. So it has become very difficult to repair them. In all my previous laptops, the battery was always attached via a connector, now a days it is soldered on. So even replacing a battery is a big task.
