OT-any mac lovers out here....

:

A couple of things:
1. The macbook 2 ghz comes with only 1 gb ram
2. It comes only with a 80gb hdd
3. You should mention dvd DUAL-LAYER WRITER. That's the best part of the macbook slot drive.
4. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the macbook only has a vga cam, not a 1.3 mp cam.

And yes, I happen to be the proud owner of a macbook... in the same ipod 'gay' white colour :p

Plus i've set-up my my home and office with a airport extreme and airport express base station respectively.

Where did you buy your macbook from anyway?

I bought a HP Pavilion DV6226TX yesterday for 57K. The specs are -

Intel Core 2 Duo - T5200 - 1.6 GHz - 533 FSB - 2 MB L2 Cache
1 GB DDR2 667 MHz RAM
120 GB SATA HDD, 5400 RPM, 150 MB/sec
NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7400 Graphics Card
Windows Vista Home Premium
Lightscribe Super Multi DVD Writer (+/-R +/-RW) with Double Layer support
Media Center Remote Control
In-built 1.3 MP Webcam

I am looking to purchase a notebook after 4 years. My IBM Thinkpad G40 just died. After carrying this 4 Kg monster all these years, I want something different, within 2.5 Kg.

I want it really small and light, with a big and fast hard drive. The optical drive is optional. The budget is around 75K. Not really brand loyal, but need 3 year warranty with good A.S.S coverage. Is there something out there?

Anything that can run Vista comfortably may be too expensive. So XP Pro is fine. Don't suggest that 4.5 inch screen Lilliput from Sony either.

Anything from the Dell stable okay? I you buy from India the 1505 costs 40K.
Now upgrade the HDD to 7200rpm 120GB, make ran as 2GB, and get a better screen and it will be 60K. Buy the same setup in US with deal codes it will be 1000$. You can buy extended warranty for 100$ extra.

get dell xps series or Toshiba satellite series...they will have 3-yrs warranty on both of them....

and major difference between the laptops is due to processor and memory, hdd sizes and speeds....with which the price difference comes....

Satellite series is way too expensive for not much features. Dell is fine. But isn't XPS 1210 better and lighter than Inspiron 1501? I can even get 7200rpm drive there. Any 1210 user here?

In notebooks with wide display, the size still refers to diagonal distance, right? Somebody was telling it might refer to horizontal width, that can get confusing.

Diagonal distance it is. I bought one a year back, so things have moved on. With dell what I like is that you can customize the RAM/HDD/Graphics.
Do not get fooled into upgrading the sound card. Its more or less a software upgrade.

My US office is completely a DELL shop, I made that switch in 1999, simply because of the convenience of online configuration facility. But not so in India, here we are a combination of IBM and HP.

Yeah, I noticed that.

Like how much cheap?

Its with all the B&W. Right?

Samurai, with the Rupee Kissing 40 to a dollar, and Dell India prices still high side(even after the drop) if you can get from the US nothing like it. 1000$ will get you
1. Dual core
2. 2GB RAM
3. 120GB HDD 7200rpm
3. Higher resolution screen.

Make sure you use the deal codes. Sites like deals2buy help a lot. I shaved off 100$ of my purchase when I used a coupon code from deals2buy.com

I would say if you are buying a laptop for daily use then consider thinkpad. The build quality is the best. Dell is another good option, but then service can be an issue as you have to send the laptop to chennai ( or banglore ?). But Dell gives good value for money, as service network is nonexistant.

Also if battery life is more important than little speed then go for normal 4K HDD and not 7200rpm disks as they are a battery hog. And believe me the performance difference is not much to speak about. You can get the same performance with Xp, 1Gig and Core 2 Duo.

Stay away from Sony as they are flaunt value and nothing else.

Abhi ( car pc wala ) has very good knowledge on laptops. You should pm him.

I'm using a Thinkpad for last 2 years. IBM R52 with Centrino 1.86Ghz, 512MB/ 60GB HDD/ Win XP Proff./ wireless Lan
Bluetooth and i'm very much happy with the quality and performance. i sud admit though many of the IBM notebook are not that good lookin. There are slim and good lookin models in IBM but are expensive.. I love the T series in IBM Thinkpad. but it was way above my budget

the IBM is not what it is used to be...now it is lenovo and it is not what IBM was.....I would suggest to go for lenovo laptop....

Please get your facts right. Dell has a site service warranty which means that if you have a problem with your laptop and you're located anywhere within the Asia-Pacific region they will come & fix it for you.

I've tried doing this twice, once in Delhi & once in Moradabad. Both times after a tele-diagnosis the service engineer turned up at my place within 24 hrs of the call with the new parts which were suspected to be causing the trouble.

I have been a Dell user for over 4 years now & have nothing but praise for their excellent service.

P.S. Dell has a service contract with Wipro & one other company who send the engineers for doing the repairs at your premises. So actually they do have a service network.
