Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Found this Lenovo Ideapad model on Amazon recently. Planning to buy this one.

Is this good ? Any similar alternatives ? Only negative I found was WiFi 6 is not supported.

And strange thing is it is not showing on Lenovo India website. Maybe it is outdated model ?

Yes, that's a good laptop. The specs are good. You're not missing anything with WiFi 6, it's only WiFi 6E you should care about. Don't fall for marketing

No, that means the Lenovo site is outdated, because this laptop has one of the newest AMD CPUs available in the market

Please advise!

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Any wise men here can throw gyaan on iPAD Pro vs MacAir vs MacBook all based on latest M1 chip?

I have not been doing much video posts but thought it may be good idea to replace my current five year old MacAir with iPad Pro and add a keyboard and use it both ways.

Is it feasible?

Thanks for the reply, I saw another model also which has Intel i7 and WiFi 6 but it is out of my budget.

Regarding WiFi 6 I see many videos claiming there is increase in speed over WiFi 5. But yes, it would be better to wait for WiFi 6E with the new 6 GHz band.

Never expected manufacturer website and shop to be outdated when Amazon has listing

It is highly likely that it has a 2nd M.2 slot as that's the case with many laptops these days, but since there are no reviews with the chassis open, it's not something I can confirm, unfortunately. If a Dell support agent says it, I would hope it's true.

"Intel i7" means nothing to be honest, it's just the name of a product range, and a very diluted one these days. The Ryzen 7 5700U has 4 more physical cores, and 8 more logical threads which will come in handy for multi-core workloads, and will also mean that the laptop is more future-proof.

Depends on your use case. I personally wouldn't consider an iPad Pro to be a replacement for a Macbook Air/Pro if your primary use is for work. However, if you just use your Macbook Air for web browsing, e-books, entertainment like movies, TV shows etc., then yes, an iPad Pro would be a viable alternative.

Cheers

I could grab this information from their product guide and also this YT link provides a brief view with it's chassis open(3:21 - 3:33). Please advise.

The breakdown of M.2 slots in the screenshot you provided has the answer - the laptop should have three M.2 slots. One is in use for the WiFi & Bluetooth adaptor, one is in use for the SSD that comes with the laptop, and you should have one free M.2 slot left to use for another SSD.

In the brief look at the chassis in this review I can only see two of the M.2 slots, and he doesn't mention anything about them either. But, I would go with the information you got directly from Dell.

Cheers

I have got to know that 5700U is based on the older 'Zen 2' architecture and they are coming out with processors with 'Zen 3' architecture. How significant is the difference?

Are there any consumer models with 'Zen 3' processors? Please advise!

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

I need a laptop for my daughter's online classes which take place on Zoom. Apart from this, the laptop will be used for light stuff such as browsing, document creation, etc. My budget is ~50k.

Now I've been a Mac user since a long time, and have had Linux laptops as secondary devices intermittently. I had decided to buy a used Mac from a reputed dealer, who gives a 45 day warranty and comes with a good reference. However, I am not so sure now about buying a used laptop.

The options, including the Macs, that I have shortlisted are:

Refurbished Macs:
1. 2015 Macbook Pro 13 inches, Retina display, 128gb SSD, 8gb RAM : 45000
2. 2017 Macbook Air 13 inches, non-Retina, 128gb SSD, 8gb RAM : 45000

Windows Laptops:
https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0922KX1MX/...P6K7BYGJ54HEXJ

https://bit.ly/3iBPaA6

Please suggest which one should I consider. The open questions for me is:
1. Is it safe to get a refurbished Mac?
2. Is an 11th gen i3 sufficient for the light usage? Or should I future proof by getting a more powerful processor?

Any other recommendations will be welcome.

Thanks.

For the Ryzen 5000 series of processors, if the 2nd digit is an even number, then its based on the Zen 3 architecture. eg 5600U, 5800H etc. If the 2nd digit is odd, its based on the older Zen 2 architecture eg. 5500U, 5700U etc. The main difference is that the L3 cache is common for all the cores in Zen 3 architecture as opposed to two separate L3 caches for a set of four cores in Zen 2. Also, I believe they have doubled the L3 cache in Zen 3 models.

3 of my last 4 Macs have been refurbished and have no problems whatsoever. Just one suggestion opt for the Pro over the Air.

Try for 40k types. Because I recently got a late 2012 iMac for 40k (non SSD) and 3 years back paid 50k for 2015 MacBook Pro (13 inch retina, 8gb ram, 512 gb ssd) but it was picked up from the UK.

Sudev, just saw your post.

Let me tell you about my usage. I have an iMac at home (mid 2011) and at work (late 2012). I used to use a MacBook Pro when travelling, but turns out it no longer has the battery life it did when it was new. Also, it was cumbersome to carry it and open up in places where I was working (on field). Also had to get a car charger for the laptop which was space consuming in the Abarth.

So went ahead with the 256gb iPad Air 2020 as the replacement. I still have the laptop with me, but what I do it I remote desktop into the iMacs if needed from the iPad and it gets my job done. Down side I have to keep the PC on always, but its a small price to pay for the convenience.

Regarding keyboard, I'm using a logitech 3-in-1 K480 for iPad. I was not comfortable with the keyboard cases due to the distance and keyboard ergonomics. You can read more about it here (My iPad Air : How I ditched the laptop).

Infact, thanks to iPad my productivity has increased by a lot. Also, I always have the peace of mind of remote logging incase some program (PC only) needs to be run. Most of the apps - email, video editing, zoom calls, etc all work fine on the iPad.

Coming to the M1 specific choice, go for the iPad. The M1 is an excellent chip but isn't suitable for the desktop usage. Case in point, my iMac at home has 20 GB of RAM, as I need it for video / photo editing. But M1 has a hard limit of 16 GB. I'm super exited for the new 24 iMac, but the Low ram was a let down. I will wait for the rumoured M1X or M2 before buying an Apple silicone laptop / desktop.
