Hi there, i guess you got the model i suggested, mixed up.
The model i suggested (35k) has a 10th gen i3, a 256GB SSD and 4GB ram, which will be more than sufficient for a student. And considering the OP needs 2 of them, it is a better deal. In case there is need, the OP can just add another 4GB of ram later, down the lane.

Based on the results, I wouldn't touch an 9th/10th-gen Intel laptop with a barge-pole if I can get an AMD 4000 series laptop in a similar price range.

My thoughts exactly! But I've seen this before. Intel will strong arm its way out. It's about all the support systems - drivers, support chips, integration and so on. Plus their marketing will be brutal - I've already seen price cuts on their 10th gen i5 laptops, you will not be able to refuse. So may be the battle has been won by AMD, but the war is something Intel is ready for, even with substandard offerings. Good news for the consumer any which way you look at it!

That's the crux. AMD is dependent on a third party for manufacturing. They can't just scale up overnight even if there was demand. And that third party (TSMC) caters to many customers including the likes of Apple, QCOM, Nvidia to name a few. It's not easy to get a slot with them. They are already booked for capacity (for example, Apple has exclusively booked two third of their 5nm capacity for their products!)

And for most consumers these spec battles don't matter. All you want is a decent machine that can serve your uses. Both can do that 99/100 times. Unless that 1 odd app is what you care for, nothing to fret here.

In the Intel i5 range is there any AMD processor which is worth comparing ?

I need to pickup a mid segment laptop , basically thanks to COVID now I need to get one extra laptop for the kids online classes..
Skype / Teams / Zoom etc..

Also let me know if anyone has any recommendations.

Criteria
i5 / SSD ( less storage is fine as we have a NAS )
Ram should have expandable slots for now thinking of going with 8gb min.

Yes, the AMD Ryzen 5 series is directly comparable to Intel's i5 series.

AMD is better than Intel with their new 4000 series CPUs - this was not the case with their previous generation mobile CPUs. Also, the new generation CPUs have just been launched, and won't be available to order immediately. Since your requirement sounds like you need a laptop soon and cannot wait, I suggest you choose from what is available in the market currently.

I think that it's important to state your target budget. Laptops can be recommended based on that.

+1 to Primeabgb.com. They are the authorized distributors for Samsung SSDs and I found out about them on Samsung India website. I had a tough time finding half size mSATA for my Ultrabook elsewhere. And the prices were much cheaper than Amazon for those rare SSD formats.

I am looking for a laptop for my daughter studying high-school. Now she needs a laptop for full time use as the school will start online classes from end of May. Would like to go for a good quality product which is reliable but dont want to spend too much also. It does not have to be super fast for playing games. Any suggestions?

The reason i have suggested this is -
1. Windows 10
2. MS office
3. 15.6 inch screen - Full HD anti glare
4. SSD - since kids will be using them, occasional jerks will not damage the HDD (and of course, the blazing speed of SSD's)
5. 10th gen i3 Processor - far superior and power efficient than the 7th/8th gen caore processors and future proof too

Something on these lines will be good and will last a long time due to latest hardware (maybe till your kid finish school).

Just a suggestion, while you may get a decent laptop; do invest in a good monitor. At least 24"+.

Based on what's available in India right now, I think what you've selected is pretty good for the price, and for your current requirements. Again, if you cannot wait to purchase the laptop, then I say you should go for what you selected.

I should make you aware that the CPU in this laptop is not very future-proof however, and a quick comparison with its new AMD Ryzen 5 counterpart which will be priced around the same or even cheaper, shows the age of the current Intel platform. See the CPU Mark score in the screenshot below to understand what I mean.
