+1 to that.

It's 2016 and there's no excuse to not run an SSD on a laptop these days.

Is it really worth paying that extra $800 for MBP? I am super confused ad unable to decide. Have already placed the order for Lenovo and have a week before it gets shipped out.

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,
The Lenovo you should be looking at is the Yoga 900.

Otherwise MBP is really very very good. topend Windows machines nowdays are also equally good, so its just matter of your own personal taste and budget.

Thanks guys for the responses.

Lenovo Yoga 900 is almost AUS $2499. Quite out of range. I think i will go ahead and cancel the ThinkPad E460 order and get myself a MBP 13 Retina. Never used a mac before. Would be a good opportunity to learn something new. Been using Windows all along.

MBP 15 is AUS$ 2900. Way out of range. So i have to pick between MBP 13 128GB @ AUS $1878 OR MBP 13 256GB @ AUS $2161.

I normally store all my data on my exteral 1TB HDD. So i dont see a problem with a 128GB.

Can someone please highlight here whats the actual useable space on a 128GB MBP?
Thanks once again.

Re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

An interesting problem. My Lenovo Flex after installing Win10 (and a replacement Hard Disk) is working very nicely, except the touch screen is not working. My son upgraded his identical unit, managed to get the touchscreen going after disabling the USB driver in Human Interface Device. I had no luck, there are three USB drivers and I disabled both Nos. 2 & 3. The top one cannot be disabled, only removed, but comes back when system is rebooted. The HID-Touchscreen Driver is there but not working.

So the touchscreen can be made to work, but how?

Unless you plan on keeping all your data on an external disk, 128gb will get unusable pretty soon. Mac OS is a hog on storage. Itunes makes a local copy of all the music that is played on it. The applications are crazy storage eaters.
And, just in case you need to use windows, for some particular apps, by either virtualisation, or dual boot : it is practically impossible. This is the state of my storage in months time.
I have windows 10 in the bootcamp partition, though i havent used it.
You will get somewhere in the range of 80-90gb usable out of the box. The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions-imageuploadedbyteambhp1454301592.978249.jpg

I have found a laptop that ticks most of my requirements EXCEPT in comes with 4GB ram only. Also the laptop ram can't be upgraded as it is soldered in place.

IS 4GB sufficient for net surfing (heavy use of chrome browser) and MS Office use (Word, Excel and PowerPoint usually)?

The laptop I am considering is the Asus UX305FA. Any alternatives to recommend for around INR50,000?

For web browsing (with multiple browser windows) and MS Office, 4 GB is sufficient.

Check if any Dell model (latitude) for that price. I found them good in general across the models and their website used to have good details and price.

Hey,

Thanks a lot for the response.

80-90 GB is pretty low. On the other hand, i dont store anything on the laptop. And i have another windows laptop so i would never bother installing windows on mac.

I need to re think on the storage specifications before taking a final call.

Hi,

Is the non retina mac worth buying?

There are some deals going on at the moment. The listed price on Apple site is A$1,699.00. I can get it for around A$1,450.00.

How good / bad is this model in terms of day to day use and also photo editing etc.

h@r$h@l: without an SSD, it's going to take time to load / save your photo editing projects.
And 4GB is not enough. At least 8GB RAM would be a good starting point, IMO.

So, in that case i am better of investing in a rMBP. As its something i am going to use for a longer period. I am also considering iMac. As its going to be absolutely one place used device. Thinking of bumping up the budget a bit and get the iMac 21.5" with 4k display. Getting one for around A $2100.

rMBP @ AUS $1880
iMac @ AUS $2100.

21.5-INCH IMAC WITH RETINA 4K DISPLAY3.1GHz Processor*
1TB Storage3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processorTurbo Boost up to 3.6GHz8GB of onboard memory, configurable up to 16GB1TB hard drive1Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200Retina 4K 4096x2304 P3 display

Getting too confusing.

Didnt take this long to decide on a new car. 😀

If you are looking at an iMac, then you should only look at the 27' 5K model. For the same price you get a better screen and a dedicated GPU. Also you shouldn't even touch a computer with a 5400 rpm drive.

As much i would love to get the iMac 27". Its just way out of budget. 21.5" 4K itself is a bit of a stretch for me.

At this stage my preference is

1. rMBP 13.3" 128GB
2. iMac 21.5" 4K

Did you give the XPS 13 or XPS 15 a chance. B&H has a nice deal on the XPS 13 and i have both the XPS13 new version(my wifes) and XPS15 the older version.

Both are touch screen and tremendous value for money. Secondly both can be modified to an extent of upgrading the SSD card.

IMHO the infinity edge screen is way better than the Mac which was my other option to buy.

Yes. I did consider XPS 13 / 15. Both quite expensive here in Australia. I will keep an eye out for any deals and check it out.

My Brother in Law has one and its a fantastic device for sure.

Hello, did you short-list any laptop for your requirement?

I have similar usage and looking for a laptop in 35k-40k range.

Any suggestions will be helpful.
