Hi All,

Need help for my friend.

He is planning to buy a laptop in a couple of days. His usage is mostly on MS office. Can you please suggest a suitable configuration along with the price range. I have no idea on the current configurations available in the market.

Highly appreciate the help.

Cheers

Hi
As per your friends usage/needs a net book would suffice, but would not recommend it. Why?

* Poor processor (Intel atom)
* Bad battery life: battery life is not superb when compared to performance.
* Failed product: Netbook are a colossal failure all over.

I could go on and on but you get the point, right?

If he can spend around 25k he could get a 2nd gen i3 processor with decent performance.
Like this http://m.snapdeal.com/product/samsun...2nd-gen/889401

If not then opt for 3rd gen Intel pdc processor along with 2 gb ram and 500 gb hdd. They retail for around 20k

Grateful for quick take on which is better among following.

HP ENvy 4- 1201 TX
Toshiba U940 - X0110
Lenovo U510

All are ultrabooks around 60000. Toshiba is being listed from 43-52 K.

I am looking for a low weight ultrabook as travel has gone up and carrying my heavy laptop is quite painful.

Any place to buy this in Pune? Best prices?

Would be travelling to Korea via Bangkok and Hongkong with decent transit times. Though I am aware that Bangkok aiport duty free is quite expensive and exhange rate ow favours buyig in India, any pointers on whether same would be much more cheaper at HongKong airport duty free? I would be restricted to terminal 1 if that helps.

Rgds.

Normally as the saying goes, duty free is not profit free. I would suggest that you get the laptop from India or US. All other locations are quite expensive when you include International warranty.

Well put:)

Anyways, booked Lenovo U510 for 62 K locally.
COnfiguration : i5, 4 gb RAM, 1TB HDD and 24GB SSD, 15.6 inch display, 1 gb Nvidia graphics card. Weight 2.2 Kg.

CHeapest deal on flipkart was 61900 so not a big deal. Sold 2 old laptops for 18.5 K.
Expecting the delivery sometimes tomorrow noon.

I am looking to replace my old HP laptop with a new one
My requirements are basic like net surfing and MS office or normal stuff like that.
Looking for 3rd Gen i3, 2gb or 4gb RAM, 500GB HDD, 15.5" Display, Integrated display or dedicated card??
This time I want to go for Sony VAIO or Dell Inspiron.
So gurus here pls help me to choose between these two brands with their own pros and cons.

Got my Lenovo U510.

Positives:

-Dealer kept his promise of delivering the next day. Extremely unusual at my place.
-Classic form factor
-reasonably low weight. At 2.2 Kg with DVD writer I guess 1.7 Kg ones without DVD drive won't hurt me in future.
-Good battery life: Charged only once for 2 hrs and still using after 4 hrs.
-Got wireless mouse and some artis headphones for free outside the deal.

Dislikes:
-Touch pad: HORRIBLE. the mouse pointer starts shifting positions etc on its own.
-WINDOWS 8: Someone help me here.

Overall liked it. Not too sure if price was OK. Right now time to enjoy the same.

Cheers

Pretty low end. Better get a Core I5 with 4GB RAM.

I would prefer to get Laptops without OS (or free DOS) and install Won7 64 bit. HDD is no problem as the disks are quite inexpensive and you can always get an external 1TB HDD for 5.4K http://www.snapdeal.com/product/wd-my-passport-1-tb/207899

Doesn't that end up being more expensive? Aren't retail prices of Win7 more than the OEM price?

I need this laptop for daily use (like net surfing), so should I really invest money on a i5 machine? also how easy to install an OS on a blank laptop?

Thanks

All these palaces are expensive , cheapest is korea :-) while in korea search for number of shilla dutyfree and take the quote from them they understand English and tell about availability and prices over the phone.
If you get cheaper then shilla in local market then fine else buy on your return near to gate 121.
Also if you pay by mastercard cc then there is additional 5% off just check if scheme is still there or not.

I wasn't too keen on buying in Korea anyways. Their keyboards are not plain QWERTY.

Also Korea in general is very expensive.

Anyways, ended buying in India.

Could you share what you bought, where & price?

I am looking for a high end laptop with: 3rd/4th Gen i7, 8 GB RAM, a fast disk (750GB 7200 rpm or 750 5400 rpm + 32 SSD), 1 GB video card, 15.6" screen, preferably metallic body but not mandatory. Non touch screen.

i3 (2nd, 3rd gen) are more than capable for daily tasks and I think you would be fine with it. Frankly speaking, i5 and i7 are needed only if you are a pretty serious gamer or a professional and use autocad, etc.
And preferrably go with free DOS, and then install an OS of your choice.

Unless you have 64 bit applications 8GB RAM will not help much.

What you need is "Mobile Workstation". Browse HP, Dell and Lenovo to get an idea of the costs involved. The last I checked they were all upwards of 1.5L
