My hp dv 6114tx motherbroad broke down, the service center is charging me 21000/- rupees for motherboard replacement

I got it checked at the local laptop service shop, it seems the motherboard cannot be repaired..

Now I don't what to do with this laptop, is it possible to fit an after market motherboard?

How old is the laptop?

This is the exact point of my contention that extended warranties are invaluable!

@Mr.Bean: Most laptop motherboards are custom built just for that laptop model in order to place the ports according to the design of the chassis. In all probability, u might have to shell out 21K for the mobo, or shell out more & pick up a new system. If u do the latter, then make sure u purchase extended warranty on the system.

I've a query on lenovo laptops. Need to buy a laptop for self use. Mainly internet and office work. have the following notebook in mind.

Lenovo G550 - 295862Q

· Intel® Core™ Duo T4200 ( 2.00GHz 800MHz 1MB )

· PC DOS 2000 License

· 15.6 " WXGA LED Backlight TFT 1366x768

· Intel Integrated Graphics X4500
· 2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz

· 250GB 5400

· DVD Recordable (Dual Layer)

Price - Rs 28350.00 (getting a canon printer free as well).

Taking DOS because as far as i know, vista slows down dual core processors considerably. Is that right??

I am really not sure how good is a core 2 duo vis a vis dual core? Should this configuration be good enough ? and what about the quality and reliabilty issues? Dont really want to spend money and then get stuck with issues with after sales support.

Mods - have asked the same question on another forum. You can delete it from there if required.

Also, acer and HCL Me laptops are available at prices significantly lower than Dell / Hp for the same configurations. Any comments on the quality / reliabilty / A S S issues of these laptops?

Core-2 should outperform a dual-core at same GHz.

And, what do you plan to do with DOS? Install XP later? Or, will it be linux? Anyway, this looks like a reasonably priced machine.

prajwal, I purchased the laptop in september 2006, it served me for 2.5 years.. Never gave thought into repairing it since I had a spare laptop from my friend..

Now I don't have one, would make a lot of sense to buy a new one... I am looking for a dell, would never go for an HP again due to its weight and poor battery..

Win7 will work for any hardware that is compatible for Vista. With you configuration, Win7 will work well. Go for it. I believe its available with OEs for now, you can contact OEM from whom you got this notebook.

Of course it will!
Vista is very hardware hungry!
Windows 7 is supposed to work with less!

Infact Win7 work with lesser hardware configuration that Vista. Folks in MS have tried this OS on 6yr old Laptop with 512MB RAM and it works just fine.
