re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

Would really appreciate any inputs on this;

I am getting a 13' Macbook pro for around 61k at Chroma,Pune. It is MC700LL/A which is 2.3 GHz and 320 GB HDD.

There is a newer model available internationally which is 2.4 Ghz and 500GB HDD which is yet to be launched in India (Next Month - as per Reliance iStore)

Does it make sense to buy this model (MC700LL/A) with discounts right now or wait for the upgraded model? The newer model seems incremental at best and to me probably doesnt command a premium of 10K more if it sells for around 70k.

Please enlighten MacGurus!

Going by the international pricing policy of Apple... Looks like the upgraded version should cost the same.

BTW is that 61k price you mentioned after student discount of 12% or pre discount price?

No student discount - i didnt know there is a student discount of 12%!!!!!

This model costs 64900 and they are giving Rs 3000 off just till tomorrow. Coupled with 2.5 % TCS discount it is coming around 60k.

But if there is a 12% student discount i will not rush in, and buy when the new model launches... What say?

hi sids911
I enquired in the evening from apple store in new delhi. The 2.4ghz(500gb) md 313 model has arrived and the retail price is Rs.69900/-. You can get a student disount of 6% that makes it RS.65706.Imo its not a bad deal,i'll be picking up the same model next month.

The rumor about the flash drive, last I heard it, was that the MBPs would utilise a flash based 32gb drive for the OS, and a conventional HDD for everything else. The MBAs rely on flash because those are intended to be used only presentations and such. The flash memory and RAM used in MBAs are soldered on, they can't be upgraded.
The MBPs are intended to be a workstation - hence the 'pro'. Workstation systems should be powerful and extendable. Hence the bigger enclosure which makes space for changeable primary and secondary memory.

Thanks, would you happen to know what all are the differences apart from .1 Ghz processor spec bump and 320 to 500 GB storage bump?

I am thinking i could use 5000 bucks saved in an external 1TB drive if I go with current old model.

Well the choice is yours... but then 500Gigs has kinda become the norm for most notebooks in the market and the feel good factor that you have invested 60+k on a relatively new product should justify that extra 5k you spend on the new version.

On the 13 inch variant, other than the processor and storage tweaks, don't think there are any other major upgrades under the hood. Please check post #645 on page 43 by kraft.wagen for detailed variant wise changes on the Macbook pro line up

There isn't much of difference spec wise - other than the 100mhz you pointed out, the only other difference has to do with higher turbo boost. It also has graphics clocked 100 mhz higher.
IMO you'd be better of with the 1tb hdd, it makes for more practicality.

But warwithwheels also speaks of a good point, since ur spending some good cash anyway, buying the latest model has a great feel good factor. Moreover youll get better resale value.

Ultimately it's your decision.

Thanks!

The incremental upgrade doesnt seem worth it. I'll spend the cash saved on accesories or the much needed external storage. Now I am off to buy my first Macbook....wish me luck!

Well well, what did I ended up buying!!!! Its the latest version Macbook Pro 13' 2.4 Ghz finally!

When I reached chroma to buy the older version - they told me its a display piece and they do not have any other version apart from that. Furious, I went straight to Vijay Stores to buy the latest version for Rs. 65,500.

Impulse buy - but I don't feel a bit of remorse at least not yet!

BTW - the same model is costing 58k INR in Hong Kong - just in case anyone is interested to know.

Now - I just need new softwares to get me going on the mac. On my list is bootcamp and MS Office. Any more suggestions?

Impulse buying is exciting yeah

The same model would be even cheaper in the US than in hong kong, in fact it's the cheapest there. But it's a hassle trying to get it into India.

These are free stuff that I'd absolutely recommend:
  • uTorrent (if u do that)
  • Chrome or Firefox or Opera (I never liked Safari)
  • MindNode (i luv it)
  • MPlayerX (plays all codecs)
  • The Unarchiver (does what is says)
  • smcFanControl (not from app store)
  • PhoneCopy for Mac (transfer/sync contacts)
  • Caffiene (obviously keeps the mac from sleeping)
  • Cashculator (simple money managing app, im just a student so it works for me)

You could try the following free Mac apps, and you could just browse the App Store on your Mac and roam the free category for some free apps.

If you need windows once in a while (who doesn't), you could try virtualbox or VMware Fusion. They save you from rebooting into windows. I've tried running XP on them and there is absolutely no lag on my MBP 15 2010 model. We probably have the same system performance (excluding graphics).

re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

Guys, hope you can help me out here. I am thinking of switching to a Mac, I want to get the new MacBook Pro. I've been a Windows user all my life, even though I have used Macs on occasion, but I've had it with Windows and the crappy PCs that come with Windows. I have a Dell 15z, less than a year old, but it has given me numerous problems, the HD died, the screen hinge broke and now it is refusing to start (BSOD!). All these problems in about 9 months. I've had it with spending time and money on this computer, and want to make the switch.

Here, Apple are offering the new MacBook Pro with free Applecare and also the education store has good discounts. So I am really tempted to make the switch and get the 15 inch 2.4 GHz one.

MacBook Pro - Shop Apple MacBook Pro Notebook Computers - Apple Store for Education (Australia)

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks guys!
