Thad, I might be a bit behind on this thread. What is the phone in question?

Also, I presume you want to use skin + screen guard as you wont be using any cases/covers ?

Screen guard installations require lots of experience and skill. If 2-3 dust particles get trapped, they can be post corrected. In your case, I see there were more.
I would recommend visiting an offline store.

Also, for skins you can check out gadgetshieldz. Lookup for the same name and you will find their website. They're a chennai based company and are well known for skins.

The prices may seem high but quality and presentation is impeccable. They provide wet installation, they bundle a liquid along and have clear instructions on youtube. Worth a try.

It's a Motorola g84 5G. I'm currently using a back cover only, as much for the grip as for protection. I thought I'd try a skin, but I need something that does not slip out of, or even off, the hand.

I've never bothered with screen guards in the past. But I thought, if going for a skin, I might as well try the screen guard as well. The phone is about 14 months old. It seems to do fine in my pocket without screen cover.

I always used a flip cover in the past, but I got fed up with it.

I've heard of gadgetshieldz. Will take another look. Thanks.

I really doubt a skin is going to give you any grip. Skins are mostly designed for appearance and not to serve any function in general.
These guys even sell screen protectors similar to their skins. It's actually a membrane and not glass.
Again, the prices can be really steep. The price is mostly for the presentation and after sales support I believe

Thanks. No experience so far. Had hoped they would come in different textures, including like a soft back cover. Looks like I might be disappointed.

I'm not interested in using a skin to change the appearance, nor to simply preserve it.

Re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

My brother-in-law wants to buy a mobile for his son, who has given his 10th Std exam.

His requirements (in no particular order)-
1. GPS Enabled to track his location.
2. Camera (for UPI Payment if need arises).
3. Flip phone since it looks upmarket (I have advised against it as it looks more upmarket & is prone to theft. Also requires careful handling to avoid fall)
4. I advised to go for Physical Keypad phone.
5. Rough and tough phone.

Budget has not been set. But maybe 2000-3000/-

He lives in Pune, if that matters.

We gave my son a phone when he turned 15 as he was going to school on his bicycle. We gave him one of our older android phones. I had listed his google account under mine (google has a family concept for account management) so I could control his apps. He is now 18 and has his own account and phone. We also used an app (famapp) which can be recharged and used for upi.

From your requirements I doubt if you can get any phone that has a physical keypad and a camera for UPI. You may get a camera but you won't get a phonepay or some app that will sit on the phone. If UPi is a must, then your best best is an android phone.

These two conditions are very specific and leave you with very few, if any, options within your budget. A simple Google search does throw up a few options, but none that I would recommend to a college student.

I would suggest increasing your budget slightly and exploring smartphones in the basic price range of ₹7,000–₹9,000 (if possible), so the kid doesn't feel out of place once he is in college. From my experience, college students these days receive many important messages, notes, and videos shared by tuition teachers, the college itself, or friends through their phones.

Additionally, in my opinion, all smartphones come with GPS and a camera, so you don’t have to worry about those features.

The gps tracking may not get fulfilled with feature phone with keypad. Nowadays, feature phones come with camera too and many of them would support upi. But it would be some preloaded app by the manufacturer and you won't be able to install any google pay/phone pay.

My daughter used to own a Jiophone. It had upi, youtube and even whatsapp. It was a phone with keypad. The upi app was from Jio. Newer keypad phones from Jio have these features except WhatsApp.

That's news to me but that's great. As long as it's from a good manufacturer like Jio or Nokia I think it's trustable to go for it with a 3 year timeframe in mind. By then the kid will definitely have graduated to require a regular smart phone.

The longer we keep the kids away from smart phones the better it is for their overall development.

The best phone with all these features is the JioPhone Prima 2 but it is locked to a Jio Sim, so that's an issue, you either have to be on Jio or port to it:

The Jio Bharat series phones are cheaper at under 1000 (699 to 999) depending on version but don't have WiFi.

But honestly, you should get him a basic smartphone at the least, as in higher classes, teachers and students may need WhatsApp or other apps, browsers etc for classes and notes, etc.

A Rs.5400 to Rs.6500 smartphone should suffice for basic tasks.

Re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Suggestions for a 'reliable' budget smartphone under/around 10k? It's for a giveaway so I'd want to buy the phone, a protective case and a charger (if not included in box) so it's ready to use without extra expense on the recipient's part.

Use case is just basic apps: social media, UPI and the like. Video calling is a must (online classes) but WhatsApp should have that covered I presume.

I got Moto G35 5g for my mom recently. I had given Moto G32 to my father 1.5 years back which so far has been working fine. I went ahead with Moto G35 5g this time under the assumption that coming from the same series, it should perform similarly, if not better. Got a great deal with Pixel 4a exchange.

Any views on the Redmi A4 5G? Seems decently specced, has the new entry-level Snapdragon chipset (most budget phones seem to have Mediatek chipsets), and comes with a charger included in box.

If you are okay to stick with Jio/SA network for 5g, it should be good. It would not work with Airtel/NSA for 5g. 4g on both networks should be fine.
