Re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Would iPhone 13 at 40k be a good purchase during the upcoming amazon sale?

It is currently retailing at 52.5k.

Do check out the A73 5G too. 256 GB variant was available for 30k few weeks ago at Croma.

Seems like a good deal! Only thing to know, you will only get 2 or 3 more software updates. iPhones provide 5 years of software updates and 2 or 3 years are done! I think 3 cause iOS 17 just rolled out! Anyhoo, good deal! Go for it!

He will be running the latest iOS version for the next 3 years. That is good enough lifetime for a phone. My iPhone 6S (which is now a backup phone), still receives critical updates. Remember, it is a 8 year old model and received 6 years of iOS updates.

This is a steal deal for sure. Been using iPhone 13 as my primary phone for a year now and can vouch for it. 40k is a very attractive price.

Would be nice to hear your feedback on pros and cons of Pixel7.
Specially with the phone heating up during moderate usage that was widely reported.

Yes, totally. He's bound to get 3 more years of updates no matter what. iPhone 6s was amazing. It even reached a lot of bug fixes apparently even in 2022. One of my friend was using a 6s till last year! He switched to a iPhone 13 last December I believe!

For people planning to buy the S23FE, please be aware that it has Virtal Proximity Sensor. I don't know how much Samsung saves with exclusion of an essential hardware such as proximity sensor.

Folks, those willing to buy a phone during the upcoming Amazon Great Indian Festival or Flipkart's Big Billion Days, do check out this video!

They have mentioned all the good deals in which some are live already or will go live on the sale dates. Do keep an eye out for that!

Cheers!

Re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Some of you may have noticed that when scrolling through Instagram reels, those videos that are shot in HDR suddenly cause your screen brightness to go up, even though adaptive brightness is turned off. When you flip through so many videos every minute, the variation in brightness is irritating and harmful to the eyes.

Googling up, most of the solutions are for iPhone. On Android ( I have an S22 Ultra ), what is a way to tell your Android phone to not vary the brightness? Instagram itself doesn't have any such feature/toggle.

Very annoying.

Did you try disabling "auto-brightness"? You can also enable "extra dim" feature on your Samsung.

I for one have "Eye comfort shield" and "extra dim" enabled on my S22 ultra.

I use Instagram and all other social media apps on my iphone however the effect that you mentioned is sometimes visible while using YouTube as well. The two features I mentioned helps along with switching off auto brightness.

Autobrightness I thought was to do with the light in your surroundings and not the screen itself ? Extra dim, I have not tried, let me check that.

Yes , ambient sensor changes the brightness by taking cues from your surroundings but if enabled then APKs can access and tweak the settings as well.

How safe are emails and apps?

Lately I have been thinking about privacy issues in emails and apps.
Can people hack into apps in mobile phones and Windows computers? How safe are they?
At work we use apps for communication. Can the administration monitor the messages?

Quick answers:

1. People can hack into mobile phones and Windows computers.

2. Administrators might be able to monitor the messages. I think most of the common email service software allows this out of the box (don't specifically recall if Google Workspace allows this, but Exchange does. Businesses I'm sure want this feature to address liability concerns).

If you have specific concerns those could be addressed rather than such open questions. Generally I follow this rule: Don't commit to email or IM that which I don't want to be used against me.
